Sounds good but amazing that the North East's only container terminal was on the brink of closure. What happened to Newcastle's terminal?

It always struck me as bit odd that Freightliner's terminal was a not inconsiderable distance from Teesport. You'd effectively have to load every container onto a lorry and shift it by road to get to the terminal and if you're doing that anyway you might as well just send the whole thing by road!

The PD Ports rail terminal development is open access, so Freightliner, although moving their operations there won't be in a monopoly position. On the other hand for maritime traffic Freightliner will be in a better position competing with road hauliers, with loading facilities being closer to the ships and not requiring a double transfer via public roads to the old Wilton site.
