Hello,

As some of you will know, I am a huge AC electric geek.

A question I've had for a long time is about Freightliner's livery on the Class 86s and the racing green 90s (016, 41 and 46).

Why is it that around the Freightliner branding there is a different shade of green to the rest of the body?

Thanks
Joseph

The Freightliner logo on the class 86s and 90s is an oblong (or perhaps even parallelogram shaped!) vinyl application. The vinyl becomes faded, by sunlight and by washing plants, faster than the rest of the dark green bodywork, which is painted.

I thought it was because the vinyl with the Freightliner logo on was reflective?

Seen a few poorly taken shots of them on flickr with a flash on, and they seem to be.

Another point about Freightliner electrics, why are so many of the 90 fleet still in grey? Some are on their second green livery aren't they?

Thank you for all your replies- the FL electrics are painted out of sequence yes.

90016, 90041 and 90046 are racing green.

90042 (out of service), 90043, 90044, 90047, 90048 are all in grey

90045 and 90049 are in powerhaul green.

(Fortunately I have pictures of them all)

The powerhaul ones seem to turn up less often for some reason. Same with the 86s in that livery.

None of them are in their second green though. 90045 and 90049 were both grey before hand.

Hope that was of help
Joseph

Good knowledge! Still, 15 years for a repaint is pretty bad!

Are the powerhaul 86's on their second green paint job though? They must expect them to have some life left in them if they're painting 'em.

Are 042 and 043 still in grey? A few have recently been repainted. Their double arrows and Crewe plates subsequently put up for auction.
2 of the double arrows now residing in my bedroom. I may be wrong, but I could have sworn they have the numbers 042 and 043 on the back. Unfortunately I cant check right now.

All of the Freightliner class 90s have had their depot plaques and cast double arrows removed in recent years – Not even the grey ones retain them. 90042 and 90043 are still grey, and 90042 has been out of service since Autumn 2011 with serious fire damage.

I think that the Powerhaul liveried class 86s were also previously grey ones prior to their current livery.

Having travelled up and down the West Coast Main line on a daily basis for six months, the Powerhaul liveried 90s turn up just as frequently as any other members of the class on their regular duties on the WCML, in my experience.

Yeah that's right, saw 048 at York last week on the training run and it had the BR arrows patch painted/vinyl covered over.

Well I see the WCML at least once a week and I have yet to see a powerhaul 90 in the evening.

I wasn't saying that they don't get used frequently, just that I don't see them as much as the grey ones.

The Powerhaul 90s seem to be just as frequent at Ipswich as both the grey and green ones. Infact there was an example of each there this morning.

What I'm trying to say is that the two 90 diagrams that i see if i go to Nuneaton after school generally have grey or racing green 90s on. Im sure the powerhauls turn up, I just hardly see them unfortunately which is a shame as they look smart.

What a great thread guys... I am also a 90 fanatic of sorts. Ive learned a lot from this thread...
Interesting point about sightings, we try and visit the WCML about once a month and I dont think we have seen either of the 90s in Powerhaul livery.. I geuss thats part of the fun of watching trains, you never know whats around the corner!

All I need now is for Hornby to release 90s in Powerhaul and DBS liveries!!
