Freightliner 86's/90's GEML

I know Freightliner only have a handlful of 86's now but I often see them taking intermodal trains past Colchester. What timetables are these? Any recently or coming up?

Same with class 90's..
I am assuming they run as far as Ipswich where motive power is changed?

The only diagramed 86-hauled Freightliner on the GEML is 4L92 Ditton to Felixstowe
(and 4M42 return to Garston), which are booked for a pair of 86/6s, but both
trains run after dark, I'm afraid.

In addition, there is 86501, which used interchangeably with 90s
on services between Felixstowe and Trafford Park/Garston/Crewe:

To answer your other question, all these trains change locos at Ipswich yard.

After dark is cool. It makes sense as I live next to the mainline and often I hear that distinctive sound I then notice the 2 marker lights and headlight in the darkness. Such a cool sight.

So is this once a week or what? Opentraintimes doesn't show Freight headcodes so it's somewhat difficult to track down the particular train.

Plus I mainly wanted to know so I could work on an activity for Train Sims GEML route as the 86's are great to drive!

I do miss 86's on the GEML. At least Freightliner have a few left.. but I guess eventually they will be gone too..

You say 86501 turns up sometimes on http://www.opentraintimes.com/schedule/H00466/2013-07-08 Is that why this particular timetable doesn't mention changing locos at Ipswich because usually it's a diesel all the way through? How/when does it go back?

Also interesting how the 86's don't just take the Ditton train back to Ditton and infact go to Garston, that's interesting.

No - the train you liked to (4M42 22:08 Felixstowe to Garston)
is actually booked for a pair of 86/6s - for example, last night's
4M42 was worked by 86610 and 86639.

interesting how the 86's don't just take the Ditton train back to Ditton and infact go to Garston,

If you look at Ipswich yard: http://www.opentraintimes.com/location/IPSWSS/2013-09-09/2200

You will see that the train from Ditton arrives after both the Felixstowe
to Ditton trains (there are two within 20 minutes!) have departed, so the
86/6s return on the Garston train.


86 501 is a wild card - it can turn up on several different trains,
but 4L90 which I mentioned in a previous reply seems to be the
most common working at the moment.


All these trains traverse the GEML between 7pm and midnight,
so that's the time of day you need to be concentrating on...

It does show it changing locos at Ipswich,
