With, deep mining ceased in the UK it is an inevitable situation, but recycled material by train- does this deserved further invstigation

I don't know if you've seen the recent proposals from DB Cargo?
They're proposing making all 1000 odd Drivers redundant and re-employing
725 on new terms and conditions, a reduction of just under 400 Drivers.
The chances of trainee driver positions coming up any time soon is probably zero.
In the longer term there might be trainee jobs that come up, as very few if any passenger Drivers will be willing to move to the insecure nature of the rail freight work.

True enough, but unless the port up their game its pretty pointless adding more services.

The heavy haul side such as coal, steel etc has been decimated. Freight competes heavily against road as their is no rail freight subsidy.
Container traffic from the ports has been resilient but the fall in the value of the pound post brexit is making imports much dearer. This may result in a drop in demand for imported goods by Uk consumers. Unless uk exporters start increasing exports there is going to be a reduction in container traffic as well, which eventually means less trains, then less staff.
As a pass driver, I'd like to do freight for variety but it is far less secure and with no travel benefits I'd never go for it right now.
