The heavy haul side such as coal, steel etc has been decimated. Freight competes heavily against road as their is no rail freight subsidy.
Container traffic from the ports has been resilient but the fall in the value of the pound post brexit is making imports much dearer. This may result in a drop in demand for imported goods by Uk consumers. Unless uk exporters start increasing exports there is going to be a reduction in container traffic as well, which eventually means less trains, then less staff.
As a pass driver, I'd like to do freight for variety but it is far less secure and with no travel benefits I'd never go for it right now.
