Freight Train Driving

Hello,
I am interested in being a train driver., not so much for the money but an interest in driving freight trains only and not passenger trains.

I have been looking on the internet and there are a few companies advertising, but for experienced drivers.

Anyone know if there are any companies that only operate freight trains and take on trainee drivers?

Any advice or companies to try for ??

Freight is very volatile at the moment. Vast redundancies have already taken place in the industry and have been proposed for another large company so doubt any trainee positions will arise in the near future.

I know that they have asked HH drivers that have been made redundant if they would like to come back. I think this is more so for the South.

Maybe looking to take trainees at IM and HH...Not sure when but maybe next year. Just keep a eye out.

I'm guessing it's Intermodal and Heavy Haul for Freightliner but not everyone will know that.

Without prior experience as a train driver, the chance of you becoming a freight train driver is pretty slim to none-existent at the moment. You'll have a far greater chance of becoming a passenger train driver.

In other words; don't hold out on becoming a freight driver - it's not going to happen I'm afraid.

You could try with GBRF, they've got vacancies for assistant train managers and ground staff which you could progress into train driving from as an internal.

The freight market is really in a dive. The freight HR departments are spending much more time making people redundant rather than hiring new people.

I think dive is a pretty strong word. Certainly a bit rocky but as always with freight, it goes up as well as down.

The DBC situation has little to do with the freight market in itself.

Its not just DBC, FL have had similar issues as the bottom of the bulk market has fallen out.

Not the whole bulk market just coal, aggregates are doing quite well.
