Northern Constabulary and emergency services have been called to deal with a freight train derailment at Carrbridge train station.

The incident happened shortly after 1605 GMT.

The freight train had two people on board. One sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

British Transport Police said it expected that there would be disruption to rail services and possibly to roads for emergency service vehicles.
I wonder what went wrong?

A Pint that it was a track defect. ?

10 pints that any RAIB Inquiry will cut and paste the same old underlying causes ?

Update
Train is 4N47 1310 Inverness to Mossend new DBS Stobart flow for Rugby. Loco and two container wagons.

Loco is reported having rolled over and down the bank just south of Carr Bridge.

Traincrew OK apart from finger injury.

Reports coming in that was a brake failure.

Platforms at Carr Bridge also reported damaged.

Judging by the weather conditions it wouldnt suprise me if the brake failure was due to a build up of Ice and/or Snow on the brake equipment.

There was an incident recently where a freight train spadded two signals becuase of snow and ice build up resulting in almost no braking performance at all.

Obviously we will have to wait for the offical reports to see what actually happened.

Bloody hell - I'm off to Inverness on Wednesday, just hope trains are running as normal as possible by then. Still, good to hear that no-one was kileed or seriously hurt, suppose that is the main thing in situations like this.

That's why there's a requirement in the rule book to make a brake application every few minutes to ensure there's a reduction in the trains speed to ensure that the brakes are effective.

Anyway as this is still a very fresh & active investigation, let's not hypothesize about the possible causes of the accident. The OTMR will show what went on.

Correct (and of course to not allow build up on the important stuff). The OTMR download on the incident I highlighted didnt record any such application though thankfully the train managed to stop before reaching any obstructions. Of course Im not suggesting that this was the case in this instance but it is one factor that will be looked at.

Glad everyone is OK though.

I didn't realise DB schenker had any 66s in Stobart livery?

However, if it had been anything less then a 66 the outcome for the staff may have been a lot worse then 'OK'.

Is it correct that this is the first day for that service under DBS today?

I'm struggling to locate the incident from those pics.
After the 100mtrs descent from Slochd summit, it is normally looped at Carrbridge Station onto the up loop, (which is also the only platform with station buildings). The max linespeed through the loop is 40 but of course if it was being held there, would have stopped.
But it seems to have travelled further through the station, possibly over the crossover from the goods yard and onto the crossover at the south end of the loop (which is only 50mtrs south of the station buildings). Can't see that it would have been doing anything other than trying to start after being held in the loop (as usual, continuing the descent towards Aviemore) or else had perhaps been unable to come to a standstill within the loop. In that case the south crossover may well have been set for the down service.

Don't know what houses may have been at risk 68000, unless I'm orientating this the wrong way round? (Carrbridge is over 100mtrs east of the station)

But how come some pics show containers in the station (on the platform with buildings) apparenty looking south east, but with no locomotive beyond? Was the train separated? Or was it not looped (and we're looking at the down playform)? And what's that sphere hanging in the air?

Here we go, were you there, did you see it, did it "roll down" the bank?
The loco is upright and doesnt look to be crushed in which it probably would be if it "rolled over", why dont we all wait to see what the preliminary report says!

Just for a giggle without speculating, bet Stobart wish they had stayed with DRS now though

Of course i wasn't there. I read Old Timer's post on the previous page:

In fairness my post did report as shown, which was on the basis of three different reports, one of which declared it a write-off, but looking at the pictures I doubt very much that it rolled over.

When I do not have definitive information I always use the word "reported".

Doesn't look good. The snow way well have acted as a "cushion" though and offered a form of buffer and protection from further damage.

It's an awful lot of damaged food and goods for the highlands and not ideal weather for equivalent lorries going up the A9.

Got to wonder if it was accidental though... Hasn't this train raised the interest of criminals before?

Eh? Now I really am confused. Was it climbng north out of Carrbridge (over the bridge), or rolling south towards Aviemore?
At that time it would normally be going south AFTER unloading for Tesco et al at Inverness, but if you're right then that might explain the odd location of the containers on the station.

Sorry Mate wasn't having a go at you, it was just the "oh it was lucky it was a 66" and all the other "band wagon" jumping going on that gets my back up, without any pictures or video to show how things have landed.
Happens everytime there is an incident, I suppose I will get used to it one day.

edited response to another post-
If the train was (is) loaded, or is that another assumption, then the food will be fine, I mean its probably colder outside than inside.
