Freight jobs and direct inquiries

Does anybody know if freight companies take on drivers through direct inquiries without a vacancy being advertised. I know they are training drivers off the street but it seems ridiculous how little vacancies for qualified drivers there seems to be. I'm on the passenger side and we are constantly short of drivers even with lots of trainees so I can't imagine its any different on the freight side. Seems that unless you're based around London, Scotland or Birmingham there is never any vacancies for any companies for the last 3-4 years.

GBRF definitely do. 4 drivers left my passenger depot by doing exactly that at different times. They wont usually take individuals but wait until they need a few people across the business to justify doing a TOC to FOC course. All the people who left were on courses with about three or four people, all speculative applicants who sent CVs via the website. Freightliner usually go through adverts and there have been several recently. Eastleigh, Mossend, London Gateway have all been up in the last couple of months.

Also freight companies don’t mind operating thin. The drivers are more than happy to blitz RDW which gives ample cover. On the passenger side companies generally want a full roster with spares. As somebody with very close GBRF links, their drivers are almost always busy with alot being asked to work on rest days, sometimes part jobs for what can only be described as ridiculous money compared to what we would be offered on the passenger side. So being short probably suits the company and the drivers.
