Freight in York Station

I always thought there was an avoiding line for it, yesterday afternoon was in the NRM looking at the signalling board and a 66-hauled freightliner went through platform 3 (holding up a London train, 1s36 possibly? was around 14:20-ish). Had followed this one on the board & it had come down the ECML.

Went back to York station for about 15:30 and another one came through, which again was of the ECML.

Finally, after deciding to go and have something to eat in York because the train I'd intended to catch was rammed full, at about 17:15 another 66 on a train of empty steel wagons went through (was at the south end of the station this time, so not sure if was off the ECML)

Did see some freight going up the avoiding line, is it usual for it to go through the station? Certainly the first one mentioned caused delay to a passenger train behind when it got held waiting for another London train off platform 6.

Some freight is booked to run through the station while ohers are not.

Occasionally a freight train is booked to stand U Slow for a while so any further freight travelling south has to go through the station.

If a train is in it's booked path it will NOT be delaying any other train

The southbound freightliners from Wilton have been going through the station for some years now.
I suspect the reason might be the arrangement of tracks north of York. I think it's down slow, down fast, up fast, up slow. This would mean that a southbound freight has to cross up and down fasts to get to the station avoid route. Putting them through the station might be convenient if there are several trains due on the down fast.

That's usually the case, also the junction speed at Skelton Bridge Jn is quite slow when crossing to the Up Slow via the avoiding lines. Sometimes it is much quicker for a class 4 or 6 to pass through the station depending on where it is heading. If it's heading down the ECML towards Doncaster then it's usually much easier than trying to cross at Colton Jn.

There's a few crew changes at York as there's often freight men from Newcastle sat in the messroom at night.

Normally the phone goes off in the messroom when the train passes Skelton Jn.

cheers for the info people, I'm usually straight onto the train at York but got there at the wrong times yesterday (in terms of catching trains at least), I got to have a look at 33201 for a bit anyway

There are a few that regularly run through the station (Eg. 4M51 is booked a crew change) and others do as and when. 4L79 from Wilton does sometimes run via the avoiding line but as has been mentioned it depends on traffic at Skelton Bridge Junction.
