not sure what to ask for.. but how do I keep in the loop about new freight contracts around the UK etc ... new freight workings and all the planning for that..
Media focuses more on passenger services with this sort of thing.. but freight is a fascinating thing to observe :)

Google Rail Freight and Freight News. Then do what I have done and bookmark sites of interest that come up.

The individual rail freight companies have their own web sites as have RFG and Freight on Rail. Inevitably, news of traffic gained gets a mention but not losses.

For example, the Antwerp- Irvine via the Tunnel china clay has recently transferred from DBC to GBRF. No mention by DBC but a news release by GBRF.

You could also try Freightmaster.

This site covers everything freight wise including freight Timetable at numerous locations around the UK, and a forum devoted mainly to freight which is very informative including a regular freight gains and losses section.

You do have to pay, but if you want to give it a try there is an offer on at the moment to the end of March for just £12.

You could start with the Rail Freight Group website or something like one of the trade journals - although it depends if you want detail on commercial activity or spotter info.

if the latter the best place is this sort of site. If you want timetables Frieghtmaster is the best source other than digging through RTT which can be confusing for the uninitiated! Either way the answer at the moment is in amny sectors, sadly, close to nil. Coal and steel have suffered badly recently, aggregates & containers less so.
