Does anyone know the best places to see freight in the Cologne area. Have an afternoon there and am aware that the Hauptbahnhof is virtually freight free.

I had heard that most freight heads down the west bank of the Rhine. Confirmation of this would be appreciated.

When I was there spend some time in the mornings at Cologne West and South (my German is not very good) which had a good flow of freights through.

The most interesting thing about Sud is that the stopping trains do not use the middle platform faces but the outside ones. And the only way to move from one platform to the other is the subway at one end of the station. Therefore a lot of people cross by the tracks which has resulted in DB putting up signs telling people not to do it.

West is probably the better station of the two, and you can spot the wild parakeets there too!
