With a Freedom of Severn & Solent ticket , I wish to go from Eastleigh to Fratton.
The obvious & quickest route is via Hedge End & Botley to Fareham but this route is not marked on the FoSS map.

Do I have to go via Southampton Central ?

Thanks
Ron

Yes you do have to go via Swanwick even though it is silly not to allow you to go direct from Eastleigh to Portsmouth, however if you wanted to go via Hedge End you might get away with it, but that of course is up to you and I don't recommend it

Yes - the map defines the routing validity.

I would suggest that it is an error on the map. Seems a bit strange not to include that line on the Freedom of Severn and Solent Rover (FOSS) when it is included on the Freedom of South West Rover (FOSW) map.

The FOSW Rover should just be a combination of FOSS and Freedom of Devon and Cornwall Rovers' areas of validity.

That said, the map, despite the error, does define validity. So best ask the guard before boarding a service travelling via Hedge End.

It's not on the FOSW map either ;)

NRE seem to think the FOSS is valid to Honiton while FGW seem to think Axminster, I know which one I'll pretend to belive and it's not the one I should belive. ;)

I did it last summer with SWT and didn't get done. Anyway NRE maps are more detailed and accurate and as Mike says they are the definitive source of information.

I've emailed ATOC and FGW to get clarification on what I see as an error in the published maps.

I can't see any logical reason why Eastleigh to Fareham via Hedge End should be omitted from the FOSS Rover's mapped area of validity.

Even though it is totally illogical, I believe the FGW maps are correct in not allowing travel Eastleigh-Fareham direct. The two websites also differ when it comes to when the rover is valid. FGW says after nine o'clock and on a list of trains before nine o'clock. NRE says after nine o'clock or after Cheap Day Returns are valid, whichever is earlier.

AFAIK the list of times on the FGW website is the list of when Cheap Day Returns are valid.

Have you got a link to this list?
is the 0844 off Penzance listed as this is the first train that a CDR to stations as far as Exeter/Tiverton is valid on as per restriction code LB "Any train Except those timed to depart before 0840 Monday - Friday"

Care to offer a reason why? The Rovers concerned are not a FGW product.

If a CDR is available before 0900 then the relevant rover is valid. FGW do not list the 0844 off Penzance, but that doesn't mean it is not valid. National Rail Enquiries should, in this instance, be taken as the definitive source of information.

And even if you argue that FGW's rules are the right ones then you can still travel on the 0844 from PNZ as your right to do so is covered by consumer law. Where there is ambiguity or conflicting information, the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts regulations allow the contract term most favourable to the consumer to prevail.

I believe, although I'm not certain that an older National Rail map, before they were all updated did not include the Eastleigh-Fareham direct line. They may have intentionally added it, but for some reason failed to add it to the FOSS rover map. Or, it could have been added by accident. I expect the reason the line is not included is because originally the route via Chandlers Ford was not in regular passenger use, so it was unlikely rover passengers would have been at Eastleigh. When regular services via Chandlers Ford started, the direct route from Eastleigh-Fareham would have also, logically, been added.
