I posted this in the Thameslink thread in Traction, but was directed over here.

Do Freedom passes have to be touched in at Elephant and Castle? I want to take my grandmother on the Beckenham Jn to St Pancras service before 9.30am.

The FP isn't valid at this time between Beckenham and Elephant but it is valid between Elephant and St Pancras.

Can I buy her a single to Elephant and stay on train to St Pancras or would we need to get off the train, exit the barriers, then enter again by touching in with her Freedom Pass?

I assume her Freedom Pass is on an Oyster Card from what you're saying? Does she have one of these ones as well?

If so, then as long as she has a ticket to Elephant & Castle, she should just be able to show her Freedom Pass on the train and at St Pancras.

You should be able to find further information on the Freedom Pass website.

She's definitely got an Oyster card but I need to check if she has the pass you've illustrated too. If she's only got the Oyster card, then do I assume that we will have to buy a single ticket for the whole journey, otherwise there will be an error when she tries to swipe out at St Pancras.

The Freedom Pass website says that you can buy extension tickets for going out of a Freedom Pass area, but does that apply to going into an area? I'd rather not have to queue at the ticket office, and just buy a single to Elephant at the machine if possible.

Correct me if I am wrong anyone but I am sure freedom passes are the same as travelcards and can only be used up to zone 6 on trains?

No, freedom passes are valid on the entire tube and bus network, as well as all NR stations within those zones, Amersham to Upminsrer, Dartford to West Drayton, Sunley to Gordon Hill.

It's all on the TfL website, including a map!:)

In this case, even if they were only up to zone 6 it wouldn't matter as Beckenham Junction is in zone 4, Elephant & Castle in zone 1 and/or 2, and St Pancras in zone 1.

Well spotted!

Dartford is a strange one, freedom passes are valid to/from the station (and there are oyster readers for this purpose) but no other oyster cards or travelcards are....(apart from travelcards from/to Dartford :P)

Yes, Freedom Passes are valid to quite a few destinations outside of Zone 6. The FRPP states the following on the subject:

FRPP said:
Area of validity
London Fare Zones 1–6, plus Dartford, Swanley, stations Rickmansworth to Amersham inclusive, and stations Carpenders Park to Watford Junction inclusive on participating Train Company services, London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, London Tramlink and most bus services in the Greater London area.

Just as an aside, there is talk of Dartford being included in the Travelcard Zone 8 in a similar way to the Amersham/Watford/Chesham fares structures.
