Freedom Pass query

I'm travelling from London to Poole next Saturday and will buy a Off Peak Day Return for Clapham Junction to Poole. Will my Freedom Pass cover me if I board the train at Waterloo even if it doesn't stop at Clapham Junction? Pauldubs

This crops up regularly, the most recent was a couple of weeks ago.

At the times when it is available for National Rail travel, a TfL Freedom Pass is treated as a season ticket.

This means that, if it is combined with one or more other tickets, none of which are season tickets and none of which are leisure passes, it can be used on a train which does not stop where the passenger changes from using one ticket to using the next. See Condition 19(c) of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage.

Boundary Zone 6 - Poole is £40.30. No need to pay for Clapham Jn to BZ6 as you already hold a pass for that.

Hi there, your freedom pass acts as a 'Zonal' ticket which means you are allowed to use for part of your journey to Poole. Don't pay the excess from Clapham Junction though! Your Freedom Pass covers you as far as Surbiton.

Monty & Yorkie I'll get the Subiton - Poole fare as I can buy that online shortly before I travel and collect on departure from my local station - it will be even cheaper as I 've got a Snr Rail Card!

The boundary zone fare would be better as this bypasses Condition 19. If you got the ticket from Surbiton, you would be expected to get a train that stops where your tickets change over (Surbiton). Some Guards are lenient, some not so much, the Boundary Zone fare would avoid this unnecessary complication and is the same price.

The Surbiton ticket is valid as the Freedom Pass is counted as a Travelcard Season (ie, a Season and a Zonal ticket) however you may have problems with the Surbiton ticket, as some may think the train should call at the station. Buying a Boundary Zone 6 ticket avoids that issue.

If buying online is easier, I'd be tempted to email SWT asking them why BZ6 tickets are not sold online, are there any plans to change this, and does it make a difference which ticket is purchased? You could then bring their response in case you are challenged.

I'll make sure I get to my local station in good time (thanks to Ken/Boris the ticket office is open virtually all day) and buy a BZ6 -Poole ticket 'over the counter' Pauldubs
