Travel on the Barnsley - Penistone - Huddersfield line is shown to be valid on both the 2013 and 2014 versions of Northern Rail's leaflet "Explore the north of England by train with a Rail Rover". The current version is available from ticket offices in stations managed by Northern.

Given the discrepancy, I would carry a copy of the current leaflet with me if travelling on the Penistone line using a North East Rover.

Ok thanks will try and grab one of those leaflets. One for question I noticed on some previous trip reports on here that they travelled on grand central but they also aren't shown on the website only cross country, northern, east coast and transpennine

Not valid on open access - GC nor Hull Trains. Only the franchised operators. I have never been queried on the Penistone line.

I've never had a problem on Grand Central.

All Train Companies are obliged to adhere to the NRCoC, including Condition 10.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/static/documents/content/NRCOC.pdf

10. Tickets valid only in trains of particular Train Companies

The validity of a ticket may:
a) be restricted to; or
b) prohibit

travel in the trains of a particular Train Company or Train Companies. Any such restriction or prohibition will be shown on the ticket
So as there's no such restriction printed on the ticket...

Contradictory information is published regarding the validity of rovers and rangers on services provided by open access operators. The position regarding Grand Central and the North East Rover is:
  • Northern Rail's leaflet "Explore the north of England by train with a Rail Rover" states that the Rovers are "valid on all train operating companies' services on the maps with the exception of Grand Central and Hull Trains."
  • Condition 10 of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage states that "The validity of a ticket may:
    a) be restricted to; or
    b) prohibit
travel in the trains of a particular Train Company or Train Companies. Any such restriction or prohibition will be shown on the ticket.
    "
  • It has been reported on this forum that the North East Rover ticket does not show any restriction or prohibition on travel in the trains of a particular Train Company or Train Companies.

Yes, but in practice, if you show the ticket to the Guard upon boarding and ask "Can I take this train to <station>?" and I'm sure they will give you a positive answer (and be surprised you're even asking).

That is my experience in general. "Is this ticket valid" usually gets something along the lines "No - but it's OK". I have always asked before boarding.

I met the only miserable guard GC apparently employ on my 7-Day FONE (saw her 3 times, waved at her the first two times as she was leaning out of an HST window, got nowt but a scowl in return (even NORTHERN guards wave back, although I very rarely wave at them)) - the third time I was on the train and she checked my ticket, not a problem (though still with the scowl!). Literally everyone else who works for Grand Central is positively chipper at all times - it must just be me!
