Free Weekend Upgrade on VTWC

Apologies if this has been covered before.

AIUI, if you have an Anytime Standard class ticket, you can get a free Weekend 1st Upgrade on VTWC - with the upgrade cost only being applicable to those with Advances, Off Peaks, etc.

Now, usually, if you have a PRIV fare, you cannot upgrade it to a Weekend 1st without paying the excess to make it a non-priv fare first. But, if I was to purchase a PRIV Anytime Return, from say, Cardiff to Glasgow, and travel via Crewe, (or Birmingham New St) would I also be able to travel in 1st, on VTWC, on a Saturday, without needing to pay for an upgrade, or excess my ticket to a full undiscounted anytime?

wow, you picked a good example, off peak fare more than anytime fare so yes you could. However I have never had a problem using weekend first with my priv, and I am not aware of any reason why you shouldn't.

This was discussed recently I believe and if you have a PRIV discounted anytime ticket you ARE entitled to the upgrade

No Weekend First on any TOC requires a Priv STD ticket to be excessed to full public rate first.

You just need to pay the Weekend First rate.
