Route One reports that free weekend bus travel will be offered in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in January. It's not an ideal time of year for a jolly on the buses, but free is free.

Operational savings generated by the introduction of bus gate priority measures in Aberdeen will allow First Aberdeen and Stagecoach North Scotland to provide free travel across the city and shire on weekends in January.

The two businesses say that the move “could be the sign of things to come” if bus priority measures are further improved in Aberdeen. Each committed to reinvest the savings generated by the bus gates, which are improving journey times for over 600,000 people in the city centre each month.

In a joint statement, the operators add that the bus gates have reduced journey times by up to 25%, improved reliability, and contributed to lower pollution and congestion in Aberdeen city centre. The priority measures received support from the Scottish Government’s Bus Partnership Fund.

It made the 6pm STV news with someone from First saying that it would provide a benefit to retailers in what is a poor month. I'm curious as to the savings which are purported to be funding this - have timetables and duties been amended to reduce peak vehicle and staff requirements at both operators?

As far as I can see (as a bus user), there have been no changes to the timetables as a result of the bus gates.

Many First services still seem very slackly timetabled for a lot of the day and consequently wait time at stops, deliberately slow down to catch red traffic lights, etc.

It seems to me that one way of encouraging more passengers would be to introduce off-bus ticketing to reduce dwell times... which would give you shorter journey times and more frequent services without an increase in resources.

But of course that's never going to happen, is it?

Following free weekend bus travel’s introduction, a 20% patronage rise for First Aberdeen’s bus routes.
First Bus in Aberdeen has reported a 20% increase in weekend patronage since introducing free travel for those days throughout January.

The operator announced with Stagecoach North Scotland last month that their offer was possible thanks to operational savings resulting from new bus priority measures.

Data for the first two weekends of this year have revealed the positive impact of the decision, which the operator says it took to help reduce costs for householders at what can be a difficult time of the year.

The introduction of bus gates and bus lanes last summer cut journey times by up to 25% for 600,000 bus passengers in the city and led to increases in punctuality and reliability.

Duncan Cameron, Managing Director for First Bus Scotland, says: “We are delighted to see so many people taking advantage of our offer of free travel across all First Bus routes in Aberdeen throughout January, the subsequent benefits that will bring to people travelling around the city and the positive impact this will have on local businesses.

“The significant increase in passenger numbers highlights the appetite people have to utilise public transport in the city and shows the importance of bus priority measures such as the bus gates in helping to reduce congestion and, in turn, improve journey times for hundreds of thousands of passengers in the city each month.

“Sustainable, reliable and affordable transport is a cornerstone of making any city centre a success and we will continue to play our part alongside our investment in zero emission vehicles with nearly 50 now in operation across the city each day.”

Reading this it strikes me that this maybe a pre-emptive measure allowing First Aberdeen to counter (with data) any resistance from some quarters to bus priorities.

It happened after First said that they were to get their external PR consultants to promote the bus gates.
