Hey

I received this email and letter this morning regarding a potential Fraud Investigation. I'm not quite sure what they mean by not paying full fare as I always do, the barriers are not always in use at my station though.

I replied (see response attached) which I now regret after having read some responses on here

Any advice on what I should do if/when they respond?

Thanks

welcome - your name is at the end of the last of those 3 uploads - you may want to take that one down and obscure that and re-post it anonymously

meanwhile as to your question I'm sure you will get advice here on that over the next 24 hours or so - but I suspect the initial answer here would be given that you have already replied to them (but your reply does not seemingly ask them more than 'what is this about?' then you should not respond in any way to what they now say to you without checking here for advice on what, if anything, to say to them when they reply to you.

It's worth you thinking if you might be doing something that you think means you are genuinely paying the full fare but actually might be a contravention of some bit of the ticket regs you don't 100% understand (eg using Railcard discount on a service when you are not entitled to use the railcard for example)

Okay thank you for this! I will have a look through my recent purchases whilst waiting for them to respond!

Broxbourne to Liv St. and occasionally to Bishops Stortford as that's where my partner lives, which is the only thing I can think of as being flagged as fraudulent?

And have you been caught while travelling? Have you been buying the tickets on the train or just before scanning them to exit?

No, never been caught. I buy the tickets before getting on the train!
There must be something which has triggered this, but as you have not been caught doing anything wrong, use your right against self incrimination to say and do nothing.

Your profile says Saffron Walden which is north of both of them.

Could whichever account you buy your tickets with still be registered to Saffron Walden, even though you buy your tickets from nearer to London, so creating suspicion? (I am a non-expert so I don’t know if this possible.)

As you have replied (in sensible terms IMO) you can expect a follow-up. It might be worth finding evidence of your current address in the Broxbourne area.

(BTW if you have a driving licence, the address has legally to be your current one.)

Is there a reason as to why you buy tickets from Broxbourne to Liverpool Street? I would imagine that’s what has flagged your account, as it’s cheaper to use oyster / contactless for that journey. Especially if you say there is no scan data on entry for those tickets.
