Hello, please tell me what to do. Today I saw this email about a possible ticket fraud. I don't know what to do. I didn't respond to this email. I read advice here about not responding and generally not reacting to the sender's threats. But I'm worried about what might happen if I don't respond. I don't understand what exactly they're accusing me of. The email describes the period from 2023 to 2025... no specific dates or incidents are mentioned.

I imagine you do know what they are accusing you of, and it is likely to either be short-faring or doughnutting, or buying tickets online just before exiting barriers at stations.

However please don’t reply to me explaining what you may or may not have done, as this is a public forum. The only advice I can give is to exercise your right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you. Little that you say can help you.

If you haven’t been stopped anywhere then it will be difficult- but not impossible- for them to prosecute you. Anything more than six months ago cannot usually be prosecuted anyway.

You will receive more emails but don’t bite. If any further emails particularly worry you, come back.

The best response is no response at all - say absolutely nothing and ignore all further correspondence whether you’re guilty or innocent.

Then start buying the correct tickets from now on.

This bit isn't us moralising at you: our understanding is that once you're known to the railways, then on occasion they may send plain clothes officers out to try and catch you fare dodging. But if they stop you, and you have a valid ticket then you should be in the clear.

They aren’t accusing you of anything specific because they want you to do it for them. This is the action they take when they have suspicions based on your purchase history but don’t have any actual evidence of you using tickets improperly. Don’t further their suspicions, or give them evidence, by replying. Ignore the email. They will probably send a few more, you should ignore those too.

You do need to start buying tickets correctly or they will eventually catch you, and will have your entire history of what look like dodgy purchases to leverage against you when negotiating an out of court settlement. Consider changing ticketing provider so that this current data trail ends, but don’t be under any illusions that they won’t link it all together if in future you’re caught with an invalid ticket.

Do we know if this is the correct address for GA? A quick search of the person signing the letter doesn’t reveal any obvious link and the letter seems very vague, especially referring to more than 6 months ago amd not giving any specifics. Did the email appear to come from a genuine email address?
