Cactus has good taste with GWR 165s! They're not my favourite motive power out of everything though, but they definitely have their place in my heart!

Another excellent read FQ, tons of new sights and haulages! Needing track on LU? It's all been dud for years here! ;) Glad I've had 68008 now, although it will always be a forum celebrity! 158884 needs to hurry up and get back...

A nice little trip to London, there.
I won't be back until November as I have other things lined up, but your report has got me yearning for it.

Well, I've finally done it.

On Saturday, I was in London. I was in Hammersmith with my school, and we'd gone into the shopping centre there. I wanted to pick up a panini or something for lunch instead of McDonalds, and then I saw...Costa.

Suffice to say, I picked up one of their basil/mozzarella/tomato ones. But I also found it was the perfect opportunity to finally get a Belgian Chocolate Creamy Cooler with whipped cream.

Yeah, I can see why you like them now. ;)

(I might get a different flavour next time though - see which is best <D)

Hi guys,

Sorry about the lack of reports lately - I've been focusing solidly on geography revision for an exam at the end of the month and then another two in November.

I've also been on the forum for 3 years today - It certainly doesn't feel that long!

Thanks all!

I had time today to do this one but I'm not sure when the next will be unfortunately.

Don't you fareget about me...

Firstly I'll explain the title. It's an incredibly awful word change using the lyrics of an absolutely brilliant song, Don't you (forget about me) by Simple Minds. On Saturday 16th of July, there was a forum fares workshop in Birmingham and I just happened to be playing this song while trying to think of a title. I know, the play on words is just awful but the workshop was something I really wanted to get to because of the proximity and knowing that I'd learn a lot and that I'd have a good time with some soche. I was luckily free on that date so stuck it in my calendar and waited for it to come.

My alarm was set for 06:50 so I could be on the 08:23 from Leam as usual. I'd put a plan together that would get me loads of my required daytripper shacks before the fares workshop's start time so shoved that in my bag after getting ready for the day ahead. I had quite a while to go on the forum before dad and I headed for the station, leaving at 08:50 to get there with good time for the train. We were wondering how long it'd take for my plan to fall apart (as they seem to do on a fairly regular basis) en route, me thinking that it'd probably be at New Street first time round because I saw a winner on a different service. Will it fall apart?

I got to the station and bought a return to Solihull from the ticket office before glancing at the departure board to check if the 08:23 was on time. I wasn't to happy to see that, where it'd normally say 'on time' (it's a pretty reliable service), the word 'cancelled' was. Apparently this was due to a train fault (pesky 168s!) so I resigned myself to a long run on the 08:34 instead. This is an all shacks 165 (Warwick, Warwick Parkway, Hatton, Lapworth, Dorridge, Solihull, Moor Street) so I wasn't too pleased but my plan was still potentially going to work, with me getting to Moor Street 15 minutes before my planned departure from New Street. I kicked my heels on the station for a bit, seeing a red death come through, closely followed by the 08:24 cat while wondering if I should go for the 08:30 Stratford or not. This stops at Warwick and Hatton so I could take it to there in order to get a potential coach score and get Hatton in the book with a +5 liniar hop (I'd already had it but had a +15 for one back in the same direction). I wasn't sure if I should do it or not though as the 2 coach 165 on the 08:34 would be carrying the passengers for the 08:23 as well so after seeing that it was super-dud, high mileage 165008 on the Stratford, I flagged it and simply waited on platform 2 for dud 165007 to make an appearance. I needed both coaches in this one an had only ever had it from Warwick to Leamington (2 miles) so it was good to get it again.

I didn't need to worry about it being a busy service at all as the front bit (not over the engine as usual) was empty until I got in there. I got the very front right hand side bay of 4 in the unit and relaxed for the journey towards Moor Street. Someone else came into this part of the train at Warwick Parkway and selected the bay of four behind me but other than that him, no one else came in for the ride. We had a good ride as far as Dorridge (well, as good as you can have when you stop at Hatton and Lapworth) where we came to a stop in the platform and the doors unlocked to let passengers on and off (obviously). The London Midland 172 booked to leave 11 minutes before us was droning away in the platform next to us and at OUR departure time, the stupid thing's doors locked and it moved out of the station towards Birmingham! Why did this thoroughly tick me off? 165007 is only booked to stop at Solihull before running non stop to Birmingham. The freaking 172 stops at every shack except Bordesley! That's 7 including Moor Street compared to our 2. This means that we'll be staggering all the way to Brum thanks to a poor signaling choice.

We moved off a couple of minutes later and got moving quickly before the brakes were applied and we came to a stop just before Widney Manor station while waiting for the 172 in front of us to exit the shack. It did so and we waited outside Solihull for a moment before arriving at the platform. You may remember that I got a ticket to Solihull, the plan being to buy my daytripper on the train. The guard had come down on the 165 between Hatton and Lapworth and I asked for one but he couldn't find it whatsoever so told me to buy at Moor Street, which is obviously what I did. Anyway, back to the journey. We slowed just before Olton, not stopping this time but did again at Acocks Green. We came to a halt at the junction just before Tyseley though and waited for a few minutes. It turns out we were waiting for a 172 off the branch this time! We moved forward again and eventually crawled our way into Moor Street, arriving 14 late. This obviously meant that my plan had gone out of the window so I just decided to make up a plan B and went to get my daytripper from the ticket office at Moor Street before wandering back onto the platforms and waiting for 172341 to arrive on the near 15 minute late 09:18 to Stourbridge, noticing my penultimate LM 172 for 10 miles leave on the 09:31 to Stratford. I knew where I was going to take this one as I wanted to fall into a certain service and bailed at The Hawthorns where I had a +4 onto my next service. This was my first on time service of the day and was the 09:42 from The Hawthorns...

... To Marylebone! I'd narrowed it down to two possible cats, having seen Avenger at Leamington, both of which I wanted. Option 1 was Topcat (015) which was my lowest mileage cat, option 2 being Bagpuss (010) which would be cleared for 400 miles if I took it to Snow Hell . Actually, it'd be cleared for 400 if I took it to Jewellery Quarter (although it doesn't stop). OK, fine. If you want to split hairs then it'd be cleared for 400 if it made it to the first tram shack on the route, Handsworth Booth Street. It was on 399.75 miles !

I immediately knew the cat after seeing the DVT so knew that I'd be clearing 68010 for 400 on my run to Moor Street. The festers would be too much if I went beyond there unfortunately, except at Leam but I couldn't be bothered going back to where I started for a rank cart back. At Jewellery Quarter I saw my other penultimate LM 172 for 10 miles heading to Worcester... What are the odds?

Once I got to Moor Street, I headed up the platform slightly to a spot I knew would have maximum thrash and listened to the great tones of a cat thrashing away towards Marylebone in the morning. Thanks for a great display Bagpuss!

I now wanted to head to New Street but, after seeing a 168 to Snow Hell was due any minute, I decided to hang around to see that and take it to Snow Hell if I needed any coaches in it. It was superdud 168107 but, as it's my favorite 168, I had to take it so alighted 0.75 miles later at Snow Hell, where I walked down the hill to New Street, getting there at about 10:15. I did a quick platform check but nothing got my fancy so I decided to go for one of my required shacks in the form of Perry Barr and headed to platform 1 for the 10:27 Walsall, formed this morning of 323210. I sat in the very front coach, a required one, for the ride out but we came to a stop at Proof House Junction where we waited for a late running starship heading to Four Oaks to pass us. That didn't stop at Duddeston though while we did so at least some common sense was applied this time. I didn't want to risk Perry Barr with the delay now so decided to alight one stop short at Witton, which was also a required shack. I wandered down to the road here, went under the railway and then back up, getting up there in time to see a red death race through in the Bescot direction on a liner. I didn't have to wait too long here before a surprisingly busy 323243 rolled in and took me and a bunch of other people back to New Street.

I'd looked at RTT while at Witton and found out some really good news which would give me the next part of my day so after getting to the bat cave, I exited the station again and noticed a tram waiting to leave so ran over to dud 19 which was taken out to Bull Street. I now needed to run so I got off the tram at the back and sprinted towards Moor Street, getting there in time for my next move, the 11:18 Stourbridge. RTT was perfectly right and it was my penultimate LM 172 for 10 miles on this, 172337. This needed 4 miles to clear it so I had to go to Smethwick but this was completely fine with me. 4.25 miles later I was at Smethwick Galton Bridge with only one LM 172 needed for 10. I had a +4 here which was done with ease and a few minutes hoping that I hadn't done anything wrong was paid off with the arrival of 172214, my last one for 10! I only needed 3 miles to clear this one so decided to take it through to Snow Hell and I'd finally done it after arriving there!

Time was now getting on and Yorkie's tram would soon be getting to New Street. I had arranged to head over there to meet him off it so headed over to Snow Hell tram stop and decided to get the next one to New Street in 3 minutes time. There was one heading to Wolverhampton in 1 minute though so, after seeing it approaching, I changed platform and did a man of steel move, taking 29 one stop out to St Pauls. The other one was arriving as we were but I managed to dart across in time for 25 all the way to New Street where I would meet Yorkie. Yep, maybe in a minute! After getting there I popped over to meal deal before wandering back down to New Street and finding out that 23 was waiting to leave. This is my fave Midland Metro tram so I hopped on board and took it the tiny distance to Corporation Street before running back down the hill and over to the platform that the 12:17 to Plymouth was due to leave from.

It was running a few minutes late but I wasn't waiting on the platform for long before 43321 and 43304 rolled in. Alas they're not for me today, which is a shame because 304 is only on 229.5 (321 on 469.25). I'd be having a better afternoon though! I met up with Yorkie on this and we headed up to the concourse to wait for Samgeorge965 who was arriving on an ex Mancc 221... I don't think I need to voice my opinion on that! Yorkie tried to get his phone to show us where we were going but it seemed to be playing up so we waited for SG to come where he loaded it on his phone and we headed off. Yorkie's phone tried to send us in the wrong direction but we eventually found The Dragon Inn Wetherspoons, which would be the location of the fares workshop. We went in and found seats before getting drinks and a bowl of chips (paid for by the forum on fares workshops). We waited for the last of the group attending the fares workshop to arrive. He got there a few minutes after us and we began the fares workshop, which was absolutely excellent and highly enlightening - I recommend them to anyone. Thanks to Yorkie and the rest of the forum team for putting it on!

We left the Wetherspoons between 16:00 and 16:30 and said bye to the fourth member of the group as Yorkie, SG and I walked back over to New Street. Yorkie hadn't yet had the new tram extension so we decided to go for that and got front seats on 35 from the bat cave. As we had seats up front we decided to stay on it for a while and eventually left at The Hawthorns where we were to do a bit of 172 spinning. SG needed quite a few for haulage and worked out a little plan, coupled with me saying that 68008 was on the 08:24 from Leam to Marylebone and should be coming back on the 17:10 from there. SG needed 008 so we worked out a way to get that too. We started with the 17:09 from The Hawthorns which was 172332. We only went one stop on this to Galton Bridge where a platform change was had onto dud for SG 172336. I specifically remember that this one was dud for him as he said that we were leaving at The Hawthorns and when Yorkie asked why we'd bailed here again he replied 'because that one was dud' as it left .We did a linear hop here while Yorkie told me how the forum started and soon 172335 was taking us through to Moor Street. We had a few minutes here before another one through the tunnel, this being 172217. We then headed across to the waiting 168, which we'd be on to Solihull so we could get cat 8. This was a very high mileage one for me but it was one of my last 4 required 168s for the year along with 108 (which was surprisingly my last 168 to get when I needed them), 113 and 216. It was 168215 that took us out to Solihull. We got the usual bay of 4 that I get departing Snow Hell - the right hand side one at the very back (not over the horrid engines on them) and were soon leaving 215 at Solihull with a 25 minute wait until Avenger. We'd done some research whilst on 215 and discovered that we could go for a walk in a park in Solihull. It's as easy as a walk in the... OK, I'll get my coat.

We exited Solihull in the opposite direction that I've ever used and crossed the road to go for the little walk. It was pretty pleasant, seeing a few birds in the lake and pond and we were soon wandering back to the station. We were only there for a couple of minutes before the distinctive roar of an approaching cat became audible and 68008 arrived. The run to Snow Hell put it at 719.5 miles on 23 runs, which I think is slightly better than Tech's at 6.5 on 1 run ;). We watched it roar away from Snow Hell towards its bed at Stourbridge and the thrash was excellent. Alas it wasn't to last as our next train was 168002. This would put SG and Yorkie on 68010 from Solihull, another one that SG needed. I would have to continue to Leam on this one to get back at a reasonable time unfortunately but it had been a great time with them. The journey to Solihull on the 19:14 certainly felt better than it normally does and it has the upside of having 100% more coaches on a Saturday with 6 stops instead of 8 (on weekdays it is a 170 and stops at Lapworth and Hatton as well as the other usual ones). It was a shame to say bye to SG and Yorkie after such a great day but all good things have to come to an end (thinks of the poor trams and brush before them).

Mum picked me up at Leam and I reflected on the day. No winners for haulage and the start didn't exactly go to plan but the LM 172s cleared for 10 and another new shack, not to mention a better fares knowledge and soche to go with it. An excellent day!

Quite a beast of a day FQ! Fares Workshops, while probably quite informative, sound rather unexciting and a waste of mileage building opportunity!

Thanks guys! Tech - I wouldn't have got any mileage that day if it wasn't for the workshop, not to mention that there's some other mileage that I wouldn't have got if I didn't know about the fares ;).

A short shack seeking session

I was up at my grandparents in Penyffordd from the 18th of July to the 20th, having driven up (and driving back). I had arranged to have a session on the rails on the 19th but the 18th was an added extra. Here's what I did.

Mum, my brother and I had driven up to Penyffordd in the morning and got there at about 12:45. Granny made us both lunch and we relaxed for a minute. The house doesn't have much to do for me at all (and has a tiny garden) so I was struggling at what to do. Mum suggested that I go out for a walk. I replied very enthusiastically saying that it was a great idea and asked if being out for two and a half hours was OK. This was fine by her so I said my plan and was given a bit of cash (!) to pay for my train fare and a drink as it was the hottest day of the year (along with the next two). I left the house at 13:35 (obviously by foot) and went via the shop on the way to Penyffordd station to pick up a couple of drinks for the afternoon. I reached the station by 14:00 and only had 10 minutes to wait before my first train, the 14:08 to Wrexham Central. I wasn't the only person waiting, a group of people appearing as it was approaching. My first unit was dud 150227.
150227 at Penyffordd by fishquinn1, on Flickr

A seat was found on board and I relaxed for the journey to shack score 1, Gwersyllt. Gwersyllt is a fairly basic shack with a road bridge to change platforms. It's located right next to a Lidl which may be useful for food. I left the 150 and headed for the road bridge, snapping this shot as 227 left to complete its journey to Wrexham.

It was then over to the Lidl to see if they had anything that I could be tempted to get. I decided not to get anything in the end but at least it was something to do and somewhere cool to wait while I waited for the re-arrival of 150227, which got there at 14:39 after 17 minutes of waiting.
150227 arrives at Gwersyllt by fishquinn1, on Flickr
It must have had a trainee driver in as the unit came to a stop with half of the rear coach off the platform before moving forward again and the doors opening.

This was a fairly busy service for some reason with not many seats left but I managed to get one for the run to my next shack. The guard made it to the front coach just before my first stop but, because I already had my money out, with near exact change, he could issue my ticket before I bailed at shack score 2, Hope. I think a name change is in need for this station. Instead of hope it really should be hopeless! It isn't the nicest of stations but I didn't get to sample it for very long at all as I was en route by foot to my next shack before the 150 had left. It was down a fairly long ramp here and onto a track that led to a back road that led to the main road. I've been in the car on this stretch of main road many times so I knew where to go and it was a very easy walk to shack score 3, Caergwrle (pronounced c-eye-er-ger-lee). There is construction works going on here with part of the platform fenced off, including the waiting shelter, which wasn't good on a very hot day. It's a ramp up to the platform that runs right next to the railway at track level for a few metres before going up onto the platform but, instead of waiting on the ant infested platform in direct sunlight, I went down the ramp slightly and stayed behind some bushes while waiting for my next 150.
Caergwrle station by fishquinn1, on Flickr
I was here for 15-20 minutes before I could see the familiar sight of an ATW 150 and dud, but favorite 150 150253 made an appearance for my next ride.
Caergwrle by fishquinn1, on Flickr
This was only one stop and I was soon alighting at my last shack on the Southern Borderlands line, Cefn-y-bedd (which was shack score 4 for the day). This left me with needing only 3 on the line, Upton, Heswall and Neston.

This seems to be in a pretty deprived area as I noticed someone relieving themselves on the ramp down to the street as I changed platforms using the barrier crossing and began my half hour fester. Some tunes were put on while in the waiting room and it didn't feel like long before 150253 was making an appearance again.

I was to be on this to Penyffordd now where it'd be time to head back to Granny's so after a good little outing I alighted at Penyffordd, saw 253 leave and wandered back to the house.

Hi Fishquinn, I remember you talking about a really pie shop or something along those lines in Reading? Would you be able to remind me where please as I'm in Reading tomorrow and wouldn't mind trying it out for myself.

Not too hard, no. It's only a 10-minute walk, if that. Leave the station using the main exit, walk down the road you come onto until you reach a T junction with a pedestrian crossing (and a WH Smith opposite you on the other side of road a couple of stores to the right). Cross the road and continue going straight down a pedestrian only bit now. Before you reach the main pedestrian centre you should pass a Greggs and an HSBC at the very end. When you reach the T junction for this, turn right and walk past WH Smith, walking on the left hand side of the pedestrian path. Keep and eye out for a little passage leading away just after Smiths. Go down there and look out for a yellow path leading off it on the right hand side through a graveyard. Walk down that to the end where it gets to a complicated crossroads. Don't cross the road that's right in front of you but cross the one onto Castle Street, passing the Horn pub en route. It's on the right hand side just after the pub.

I hope those directions are OK! I'm pretty sure Google Maps shows the same route - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place...ae19f7fcefa7994!8m2!3d51.4542645!4d-0.9781303

Noddy - They cover the fares (obviously), going into detail like working out permitted routes and stuff like that, also including very handy loopholes. It's up to whoever attends what they cover though.

Kite - You've cleared the Kyle line and have made a harsh dent in Whitby but you haven't yet had the easy, hourly shacks? Could you please explain your logic? ;)

The winner metals

The day after my short shack scoring session on the Borderlands line was the 19th of July and a Tuesday. I'd been given the whole day out on the rails so had put 4 plans together involving a ranger that I'd never done before, the Lancashire day ranger. This would validate me in a large area of which I needed loads of track so that was the main aim for the day which obviously avoiding pacers. That's why I had so many plans for the day along with lots of tight connections on some of them (such as a +1 at Preston onto a tractor to Lancaster on one of my plans). All but one plan, D, involved heading up from Penyffordd to Liverpool and then over to Ormskirk for a train to Preston, where they split (A taking the tractor to Lancaster, B giving me a +3 onto a pair of 156s to Mancc, C giving me a +34 onto a 158 across the Calder Valley). D sent me from Penyffordd to Liverpool, either up to Wigan and down to Bolton or straight across to Mancc depending on pacer gen and then up to Clitheroe. Which one would be used? You'll have to read on to find that out (or use a search command if you can't hold the suspense ;)).

My day began at 06:30 when I woke up and got a quick brekky, preparing my bag after that. I'd have a morning walk to the station now, leaving Granny's at 07:20 for the walk to the station, getting there in good time for my train at 07:47. It was shaping up to be a lovely morning, which is to be expected on the hottest day of the year, and I had a pleasant fester before dud 150240 arrived.

I got a seat easily and relaxed for the 150 thrash up towards Bidston. The guard came through upon departure from Penyffordd but had to get to the doors for Buckley before being able to sell me my tickets, a return to Liverpool Central and the obvious Lancs day ranger. He did this without any problems and was a friendly, cheerful guard that helped to make the morning journey even nicer.

After a good 150 run, everyone who remained on the train after Upton (including driver and guard) left it and either waited for a connecting train (like me), left Bidston station (poor them) or changed ends of the train (obviously the driver and guard). I got a couple of photos of the 150 before it left and then turned my attention to the approaching headlights from the West Kirby direction.

I got the camera ready for another photo and it snapped dud 507016 as it arrived.
Heading to Liverpool by fishquinn1, on Flickr

This service was fairly busy today but I didn't go for the end coach as I usually do as it was a dud. Instead I got the last remaining seat in a bay of 4 in the required middle coach. There were quite a few people standing upon departure from Bidston too so I was quite lucky to get the seat. I only remembered to check my forum gen request as we left Birkenhead Park and the darn thing took a while to load so we had entered the tunnel and my phone signal had gone before it loaded. Now it was decision time. I could risk Ormskirk and have my day completely ruined if it was a pacer, something that seems to be happening more and more recently or I could play it safe and go with plan D by heading through to Lime Street and starting there. There was a lot of advantages and disadvantages going around in my head but after I heard the announcement reminding me that Merseyrail trains for Southport, Ormskirk and Kirkby weren't stopping at Moorfields, I decided to go with D (because it'd be a very tight connection at Central onto my chosen train). I didn't have too long to get onto my next train after getting to Lime Street so I ran it and got onto dud stalker 319383 in time. I then loaded my gen again (thanks to DMU180 on the forum) and found out that it was good news. The Ormskirk-Preston shuttle that I'd flagged was a 142 and my move from Wigan Wallgate to Mancc was a 156 (it'd been a 150 and 156 every time that I'd asked for gen on it though so I thought that it would be).

I was on the 09:00 service to Wigan that was a stopper but I didn't think it'd be too bad. I was wrong! The journey dragged on and on and on and it was such a boring (although winner after Huyton) route. I was certainly pleased to see the WCML and Springs Branch depot signaling that it was almost over. Although it took ages, timekeeping was fine and we arrived bang on time (which is 4 early when you take padding into account) at 09:48. I hate Wigan and think it's an absolutely vile place but wasn't outside of North Western station for long as shack score 1, Wigan Wallgate, was right next to North Western. There were some RPIs at the entrance to Wallgate station so after I passed them it was down onto the island platform with a short wait for the 09:54 to Mancc. As the gen said, this was dud 156428.

Lots of people were waiting for this service and I knew that there'd be people standing upon departure. Luckily most people left the train here and, as I'd got a perfect waiting place for the door, I easily got on board and got a table seat. It filled up and I got wedged out but I wasn't on it for too long, alighting after all winner track at shack score 2, Bolton. I now had a short wait before the Clitheroe train and, as I was expecting a 150, I was surprised to see a 156 approaching. I certainly wasn't complaining at this as it would be a much more pleasant journey although it was a shame that it was yet another dud, 156471. I'm certainly not having much luck with required units today!
The winner track started the moment we left Bolton and took a sharp right hand curve away from the track that I'd just come down. It was then a fun trundle along the branch up to Bromley Cross where we waited for about 5 minutes before continuing on the journey. We stopped at Entwistle and then continued along the line to Blackburn. I enjoyed the twisty-turny track around Entwistle and it was a shame to say bye to all of that with Blackburn. What a disappointment (of a place ;)). I'd had all of the Calder Valley before so it was a bit of dud track as we stopped at Blackburn and continued through the tunnel before leaving the 'main line' again and continuing on the branch to Clitheroe. The scenery after Ramsgreave & Wilpshire was excellent and it was a great little run. I made a mental note to get a couple of piccys on the way back down the branch.

Shack score 3 was Clitheroe and it was a pleasant little station. I had to go down a ramp and then under the railway using a little road bridge to get to the other platform and main station building. The station building is fantastic and the town centre looks excellent. The station is right next to a main road which had pretty much non stop cars but on a first look it seems that Clitheroe is a lovely place. I waited for a gap in the cars and had a wander up the high street to kill time on my half hour fester before wandering back down to the station and getting back on 156471, which had shunted out of the station and come back in on the other platform. Not many people had boarded just yet so I easily got a right hand side bay of 4 for the next part of the journey.

I made sure to get some photos of the scenery as the 156 thrashed along the line towards Blackburn once again.

It was a pretty uneventful run once again and we were soon arriving at shack score 4, Blackburn.

I needed to change platforms here to get onto a service across to Preston but I got a phot of 471 first and then descended the stairs into a load of RPIs. After getting my ticket checked it was under the subway and up onto the other platform where I saw a red death come through before my train arrived. I was glad to see that this was a winner (my first of the day!) and 158758 was a good chariot across to Preston.

This wasn't a busy service and I easily got a bay of 4 to myself in the front coach. This is a York-Blackpool service and is non-stop to Preston so it was a nice enough run and we were soon joining the WCML and arriving at Preston. There was no winner track on this run and Preston was my first dud shack in a while (I thought it was a winner when I got there but it turns out that I've had a tour from there).

Lunch was well and truly needed when I got to Preston so I exited the station and headed down the high street. I didn't have too long until my train so jogged, glad about the buildings giving shadow from the intense heat. I was on the lookout for a chippy but instead found a 'pound bakery' with excellent prices for food! Two pies for £1 with two cakes for £1! I grabbed two meat and potato pies and two Belgian buns, leaving £2 lighter! Excellent prices!

I went via a little Newsagent on the way back and picked up a large bottle of water for £1 and got back to Preston station with a few minutes before my train so opened up the packet of pies and began eating. You certainly can't tell that they're only 50p each - the quality is certainly good! The first pie had gone by the time my pair of 156s to Mancc arrived, duds 156466 and 156460. It was a fairly busy service but I got a seat and finished my second pie and Belgian buns by the time I alighted. It was winner track when we left the WCML and an OK run was had all the way to Manchester Piccadilly where I bailed. I had quite a while to get across to Victoria so headed straight to the Metrolink and had quite a while to wait before dud 3011 arrived and took me out to Piccadilly Gardens. I'd noticed that another pair was right behind us so it was only a short wait before double duds 3054 and 3039 arrived and took me over to Victoria, getting there with just enough time before my next train. This was the 14:16 to Leeds and, as expected, it was a 3 car 158. This was a winner one, 158755, so I was happy enough with that. The AC wasn't working in the middle coach (I boarded at the rear and walked through as I didn't have long at all until departure) but it was in the virtually empty front coach, which was certainly a relief. It was a nice journey out to Hebden Bridge... or not. When we got to Rochdale (the first stop), I noticed the PIS said 'trains may be delayed or cancelled due to a signaling failure on the Calder Valley. Ticket acceptance with Metrolink is in place.' I very quickly got my stuff together and headed for the door, getting off before it closed. It was then a run down the platform to where the guard was to check if it was true. He confirmed it so I thanked him and went to exercise the second part of the message!

I ran over to Rochdale Railway Station tram stop (a shack score, as was Rochdale) and immediately got on dud 3046 to its terminus at Rochdale Town Centre (shack score 7) and hopped on and off the tram to claim the shack before getting a seat again. Some of the Rochdale scum joined the part of the tram I was in here so I discreetly moved to the front and we were soon underway again. I needed all of the track to Central Park so I'd still be scoring lots and we were soon clear of Rochdale and racing along between stops. I saw a couple of my required trams en route but unfortunately couldn't get them before my train back from Victoria.

It was good to get a better view of Newton Heath than I did from the 158 as it scored me a 153 for sight. Alas it meant stopping there but that was soon over with and we were joining on the track from Bury and arriving at Victoria. I was now very uncomfortable but had to stay on to Exchange Square just so I could have the route done end to end in one hit. I didn't need the track to Exchange Square but was fine at getting the extra chainage with 3046. I bailed at Exchange Square as there was no point in trying to hide on the tram to get the headshunt as it was a dud crossover (not that I care, it's just something I like to get) so I stepped onto the platform and waited for 3046 to arrive again.

I got back on board and alighted at Victoria a few seconds later.

I was now to take the 15:46 Southport service all the way to the end (I'd also checked gen for this one several times and found that it was always a sprinter). It comes out of Newton Heath but for some reason the signaling problems on the Calder Valley were affecting it so the ECS just kept on getting later and later. In the end, a platform alteration was had to a platform with a pair of 150s heading for a different place (I can't remember where - maybe Blackpool) in them. There were going to uncouple the units and send the front one to Southport on the 15:46 and the rear one to the other location with the extra unit from the depot. Passengers were directed onto the front 2 coaches even before the driver knew what was going on! Eventually the platform staff told him so he left and what I assume was a relief crew came in to take it forward. It took a very long time to get sorted and my connection at Southport was in jeopardy by the time we'd uncoupled and were on the move, winner 150273 providing the power, just over 15 minutes late.

I had a seat on the left hand side in this busy service, right next to the window. Let me say that that was my worst decision all day. I was right in line with the sun and, being up front, had no benefit from windows. It was scorching and I ended up getting a headache. I had to move and did so, just managing to get a seat again after Wigan. I needed all of the Southport branch apart from Victoria to where the junction goes off just after Salford Crescent and the bit covered earlier in the day so it got me lots of new track. The cart continued and after an incredibly dull, awful journey I was getting off at Southport 19 late. I'd missed my connection (they let it go the moment we arrived) but there was another that'd get me back to Liverpool with 10 minutes until the last train to get to Bidston before the service to Penyffordd. I waited on the station and the unit hadn't arrived by the time it was due to leave. This caused panic with me because it put my connection at Central in severe jeopardy. 5 minutes later it was arriving, a pair of units. The announcement saying to stand back from the train while it uncoupled wasn't welcome at all. We eventually all crammed on board, me just managing to get a seat. Dud 507024 was my power back to Liverpool and we eventually departed about 11 late, with a -1 onto my connection at Central! The train got busier and busier and busier ass it got closer to Liverpool and it was absolutely crush loaded by Bootle. I hated the fact that after departing one of the stations the brakes were put on heavily and we were there for about 5 minutes. Connection gone.

I called dad at Sandhills to update him. I'd spoken with him at Southport and he said to call him when I knew what was happening. With the connection at Bidston missed, the next train would be the 20:56, over two hours after the one that I'd planned to be on. This would get me back after 21:30, which I knew would make mum scream. My only options now were get that or get mum pick me up a Chester. Neither I liked. I was telling dad as we entered the tunnel and I lost signal. Damn.

I alighted at Moorfields and headed up the escalator to a place with signal as quick as possible and called dad back. We had a quick chat and I then called mum, expecting her to go with Chester. I was wrong but she certainly wasn't happy about it - neither was I. We eventually said goodbye and I called dad back to say to him. It was then time to head across to Lime Street to get some dinner.

I went down to the platform on the Wirral line and had 5 minutes to wait before superdud 507026 arrived to take me one stop to Lime Street. I went to the Merseyrail ticket office/information thing to see what train I would have to catch. It'd be either a +5 or a +35 so I checked if the station was manned at that time and, after getting a positive answer, I decided to go for the +35 to play it safe. Sainsbury's local just over the road from Lime Street station housed my dinner and I took it back to Lime Street to eat before updating mum and dad and heading for Merseyrail.

Dud 508134 was first up and it took me to Liverpool Central for the following dud 508103 to James Street. It was funky here with all of the different coloured lights and they helped take the fester away with dud 508108 taking me to Hamilton Square. It was now time to head to Bidston and dud 507018 did the honors of taking me there. I then got a seat on the bench facing in the West Kirby direction, gave dad a call, put some music on and relaxed with the 35-minute fester.

The 150 that'd be taking me back arrived right time before shunting out of the station to let a 507 go to West Kirby, letting me get this photo.
150 leaves as 507 arrives by fishquinn1, on Flickr

Dud for the day 150240 then shunted back into the station letting me and a few other people get on board before thrashing away to Wrexham. I played some patience using my cards on this journey and it passed without any issues, getting to Penyffordd right time at 21:32. Mum was slightly delayed so I got to see 240 leave before making my way into the car park, mum and my brother arriving a couple of minutes later in the car.

Apart from the end and shortage of winners, a highly successful day was had!

Apart from the farce at the end of the day missing your connection, sounded like a good day.

But what if a pacer got put out in place of a 158/150 and you had to catch it from Leeds? ;)

As for the Borderlands Line, it will be done at some point, I'm hoping to get Neeston (sp) to clear the northern part of the line next month on an unit hunting day in Liverpool

185 to Mancc ;).

Good luck at getting Neston - you'll probably clear the northern part of the network before me though.

Don't worry Kite, I haven't done most of the Borderlands Line shacks either! They're on my list to do, as for that matter is Chirk.

Some excellent reading as always FQ, that farce must have been far less than welcome! Good news on getting some unexpected winning track in though, and a shame on the lack of winners!
