Can't find the video to Geno anywhere on YouTube. Any ideas?

I've just had a trawl and can't find it anywhere!
Who would have thought it?

The clip in question is only a few seconds long and shows an un-refurbished 50 emerging from the Bristol line tunnels at New Street.

I'll keep looking, Geno's another great song (so many great songs, so few ears) so I'll let you know if it turns up.

I'm not keen on Breakfast in America but each to their own! I agree - any song with 50 noises in is a good one! Thanks all!

Thanks. I've always liked the song, can't remember the video though.

Hi all,

I've decided to update you on a few things that may affect future bashes, including a major rule change!

1. I think I've had my last visit to Meal Deal in Birmingham. I went there yesterday morning for my usual chicken and bacon baguette meal deal and got it fine. I had the fries and drink but the baguette was one of the most foul things that I've ever tasted. The bacon looked and tasted days old and the mayo tasted off. Same for the chicken.

2. Following a conversation with dad, my rule regarding pacers has changed. It there is a pacer and another non-banned unit in the consist, I'm allowed to travel in the non banned unit. The pacer number won't get recorded, only the other unit.

3. I'm down to two required Merseyrail units!

That makes sense, I would have probably dragged you on one if one turned up yesterday ;) (the attached unit obviously)

That would only have happened if you made the connection at Lime Street though! I still can't believe that I made it!

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Several interesting reports there, especially the epic journeys to Scotland.

Did you not sleep well on the sleeper? Shock if so, I don't call it the Cally Insomnie for nothing! ;)

Some epic reads, and as you guessed I'm jealous of 68008 and 43274! You've certainly been busy catching up on trip reports, which is good to see :)

Techniquest: I interpret that as being one of your required locos for haulage? If so, I apologise for trying to rub your nose in it, however, that is not my intention.

You will never guess what I had on the 13:10 London Marylebone - Birmingham Moor Street on Thursday 1st September? 68008 "Avenger" + DVT 82203.

My last Chiltern regular for haulage yes. Everyone's had it but me (and possibly 47403)!

Still, I've had something most of you won't have had, and never will do...

390033. Gosh aren't I glad it produced that morning for a Carlisle to Crewe move!

It's one of the only 390s that dad ever recorded that he had! Wolverhampton to New Street for him and I might have had it but not had it recorded! Besides, I've had 719.5 miles from Avenger which is just slightly more than Carlisle-Crewe ;).

Sorry, but Avenger was the late lamented D804. The moggie can be renamed Purdey, after the character in The New Avengers played by Joanna Lumley:D

Going off topic slightly, but it would be nice to get 50002 and 68025 side by side. Superb, you might say...

Drinks up north

The 2nd of July was the date of the forum Manchester pub-crawl. I was planning to attend this so I stuck my name down for it. I'd decided to get the 07:21 from Leam on the Saturday morning so wanted to cycle down so mum and dad didn't have to take me down. This changed as dad told me that he wanted to get to B&Q early morning (at about 07:30) so said that he'd take me to the station. I set my alarm for 06:15 and got up the moment it went off and quickly got ready so I could pop on the forum before we left at 06:45.

I hadn't got my tickets in advance today but had ample time to get them from the ticket office before my train. The child Greater Manchester Wayfarer couldn't be found by the ticket clerk for some reason so he issued me one for the price I was pretty sure that it was - £6. It turns out that this it the price that it is anyway so there was no problem there. I headed to the platform and had only 10 minutes to wait until the 07:21 arrived with a 168/1, much to my delight. This service is one from High Wycombe for some reason meaning that it wasn't too busy with people who like to get up at stupid o' clock to go to Birmingham (so basically no one) and it was very easy to get the bay of 4 in the very front of 168110 (on the right hand side) because there was no one else in that part of the train. It was a good enough ride to Brum with no issues and I alighted at Moor Street 35 minutes later at 07:55.

My next train was the 08:15 from New Street to Crewe which starts from New Street on Saturdays (unlike weekdays). I headed via meal deal to get some brekky before going to New Street and heading to the pendo that was waiting to work the Edinburgh train. This was dud for 100 miles 390132 but I hadn't had this one for ages (and hadn't had any coaches in it) so I was happy enough. I chose coach B for my first coach in this new pendo (as I usually do) and got a bay of four for the ride North. Brekky was had on this and we were soon departing New Street on time, ready for stagger through the midlands.

It wasn't as bad as usual for some reason but we still got to Wolves a couple of minutes late. The good thing is that it is a high speed run after here and, sure enough, we gained speed quickly and were soon racing towards Stafford. Not many decent locos were identified before Crewe, the only decent thing being 86627 (with the rubbish bits being two skodas, a red death and a gherkin). We were ahead of the Mancc pendo at Stafford so I didn't need to worry about missing that at Crewe, where we arrived two minutes late. I headed over to platform 5 and was only waiting on the platform for 2-3 minutes before I got on board 390115, which was cleared for 100 by Mancc. 185143 was also coming to the pub crawl and we'd arranged to meet up before it started. He'd made a plan so I could get the Hadfield/Glossop branch with a couple of shacks on it too. At Stockport though, he text me to say that he'd missed the train that he needed to be on in order to get onto the first train of his plan. This meant that we'd have to come up with something else to do but, as he would be on the Norwich 158s, this gave me a little time to do some winner hunting around Manchester before meeting up.

Arrival at Piccadilly was a couple of minutes late but I still managed to get across to platforms 13 and 14 before the Llandudno service so I could view that. It was one of my high mileage duds so there was no way that I'd take it and instead stayed on the platform. I watched it leave and saw that a 175 was approaching from the Occy Road direction, forming one of the Manchester Airport services. I decided that I'd go for it if it was a winner so I was glad to see winner 175105 on it, putting me down to needing 2 of the 3 car ones (103 and 116). I didn't want to take it to the airport so instead settled on East Didsbury, where I'd go onto the trams. Because of this, I text 185143 to say what I was doing and asked if he wanted to do some tram shacks before the pub crawl, which was due to start at a pub next to Deansgate at 12:30. This was OK for him so we decided to do that and I left the 175 at shack score 1, East Didsbury. I then walked across to where I knew the tram station was and got there just as a tram was arriving from Deansgate (because the line between Deansgate and the city centre was shut). It wasn't meant to depart for 10 minutes though (just my luck) but I managed to get a seat at the very front on dud 3110. I needed all of the track between East Didsbury and Trafford Bar so this would be a good run for me and it was a fun enough journey.

185143 said to meet him at Cornbrook so we could get on our chosen Branch, the Altrincham one, sooner. I bailed at Cornbrook and the moment after I got onto the platform, I got a text from 185143 saying to stay on to Deansgate as he had just popped to a cafe there to get some brekky. I hopped back on 3110 just before it left and got off at its destination, Deansgate, 69 chains later. 185143 said that he'd be with me in a minute and he appeared a few minutes before the departure of dud 3056 on an Altrincham service. We got on board and overheard some Metrolink RPIs chatting to someone who had 'fallen asleep' on his way from Deansgate to Altrincham earlier in the day and had ended up back at Deansgate! He was allowed to travel back to Altrincham but was warned that if he didn't leave when we got there then a penalty fare would be charged. I haven't heard a story from him in the disputes and prosecutions section on the forum so I assume he left the tram at Altrincham ;). We had a good catch up as the tram headed down the winner metals on this fun stretch of line. 185143 noticed the PIS at Sale said that the next Altrincham service was only 5 minutes behind so we bailed there (shack score 2 if you count the East Didsbury shacks as one score) and waited for the service behind, another dud, 3006. We noticed that it was possible to get two shack scores by bailing at another shack further down instead of continuing to Altrincham so shack score 3 became Navigation Road. We waited for a few minutes here before 3056 re-appeared and took us back to Timperley, another shack score. We both used the stairs to get over the road bridge and I went back down them at the other side. When I got to the platform I spent a moment confused wondering where 185143 had got to as he wasn't coming down the stairs. I saw the next tram approaching so was hoping that he'd get a move on. The tram had pretty much come to a stop when the lift doors opened and he wandered out! He managed to get onto dud 3034 in time though and we took it to the end of the line, Altrincham. This was shack number 5 and I quickly hopped off the tram and got back on to claim the station before it took us back out to another shack score, Brooklands. 3055 was up next for the ride to Old Trafford, a linear hop. Then it was a change of platform before 3006 appeared again for the ride to Dane Road. Another platform change here before 3049 appeared for the ride to my final shack on the Altrincham branch, Stretford. It's worth mentioning that I'd had 0 winner trams so far but had scored 9 shacks and 1 unit so I was doing well. Another linear hop was done here before 3003 took us to Cornbrook for 3082, which was right behind, forward to Deansgate where it was time to head across to the first pub of the trip, The Knott Bar.

As we left this tram at Deansgate, we were spotted by Samgeorge965 and theblackwatch so we all wandered over to the pub together. It was only a walk of a couple of minutes and we got there at the start time of the meet. We all ordered drinks (me going for an apple and mango J2O) and got a seat, someone else (I can't for the life of me remember who unfortunately) joined us about 5 minutes later. We wanted to be on a tram from Deansgate at 13:01 so we had a while and eventually left the pub at about 12:55. 185143 and I had a race from the street where the stairs and lift go up to the metrolink platforms, him taking the lift, me taking the stairs. I'm glad to say that I won!

Dud 3061 was arriving to form the 13:01 East Didsbury (our one) when we got onto the platform so we all piled on board and got seats for the ride to the next pub at Chorlton. This became shack score 10 when we bailed and wandered up the stairs to get over to our next pub. There were two in Chorlton that we were planning to do so we wandered over to our first one, The Bar (that's the name, not just stating the bleeding obvious that it's a pub). I had no cash or change on me now so needed to get some out. I saw a Morrisons right next to the pub and station so decided to head for there but went to the pub first with the others, getting a pint of tap water here (it has the upside that it's free). I then decided that it was time to get some cash out and got outside. Unfortunately, Mancunian law states that it has to rain pretty much all day long and it was tipping it down a couple of moments after I got outside. I ran it because of this and decided to get some cash with cashback, getting a pack of jam donuts. I then went back out into the torrential rain and sprinted back to the pub. We finished our drinks in this one before wandering out of the pub (where there was now no rain!) and along the road slightly to the next pub, Oddest. It was quite a funky one and we chose to sit outside. I didn't get a drink here but still went in for a pnb. 185143 did some bus spotting (well, seeing what they were and then telling me if they were dud for haulage or not). Alas he's gone over to the dark side ;). We had a nice little time here and the donuts were opened for a little snack before wandering back to the tram stop.

I was hoping that the next tram would be going to Didsbury as it'd mean that I could get a shack score at the next stop along the line to pick up the Airport one from there. This wasn't the case though and we were waiting on the platform for about 3 minutes before dud 3068 arrived on the Manchester Airport service. We were taking this one the short distance to Sale Water Park, which was shack 11, and it was all winner track after the Didsbury line turned off too so I was happy enough with that! We'd be getting lunch at the pub next to Sale Water Park tram stop, Jacksons Boat. From the tram stop, there is a little track to access the pub, which we walked down, getting out of the way of a car or two en route. We then entered the pub and chose a place to sit before getting the menu out and wandering up to the counter to order. I went for the pie of the day (meat and potato), chips and pea. It was a very tasty lunch! We had time for me to get some pudding too so I decided to do so and gave £4 over for a slab of choccy fudge cake and cream (much to 185143's horror they didn't have ice cream). I was expecting it to be a good size for the price but it was tiny, which wasn't good. It tasted excellent though but it wasn't money well spent. 185143 showed me a photo of a slab of cake that he'd had with ice cream in Runcorn after we'd left (he agreed that mine was tiny) saying that he got the huge, huge (an it most certainly was) for a very low amount of money (I can't remember how much now though). Much better value than mine :(. Oh well!

Back at Sale Water Park stop, we only had a few minutes before the next Airport bound tram. This was in the capable hands of dud (I'm really not doing well for trams today!) 3097, which we were to be on for the long ride to Wythenshawe Town Centre. Wythenshawe certainly isn't the nicest of places by any stretch of the imagination. I knew this before I bailed - getting off at shack score 12 just confirmed it. Our next pub was just across the road from here and it certainly displayed what Wythenshawe was like as the Silver Birch was certainly a rough pub by the looks of it. SG, 185143 and I just headed for some seats away from all of the locals as the others went up to get a drink and we were all pleased to leave after theblackwatch and the other guy finished their drinks. It was probably the most hostile pub I've been in. We didn't have too long before getting away from Wythenshawe because dud 3105 was soon approaching Wythenshawe Town Centre tram stop on an airport bound.

This was to be our penultimate tram as we were heading to a pub near Shadowmoss station but it was also the pub that I was looking forward to most out of the day by quite a margin. It wasn't on the plan but everyone wanted to get there as it sounded like a really excellent pub. Shadowmoss was bailed at and became shack score 13. We had a short walk to get to the pub (the furthest of the day though) but it was certainly worth it. This pub was the Airport pub and was right next to the runway for Manchester Airport with a large beer garden with a fence around it, as you were right next to the planes landing and taking off. It was truly excellent! I took a lot of videos and a few photos while there.

This was the best pub I'd ever been to and, unlike Wythenshawe, it was a shame to leave.

SG and theblackwatch were going on a Branch Line Society tour with a pair of TPE 170s from Manchester Airport and 185143 wanted to get onto his local line (the Manchester-Liverpool via Warrington one) to get a few photos of the 170s coming through. For 185143, this meant that he'd have to head off sooner as he wanted to get to Humphrey Park (I think) first. A bus was required to get to the airport in time for his train so we said bye and then wandered back to the tram stop where we were waiting for 5 minutes before my last tram of the day, dud 3078 arrived meaning that I got no winner trams. This was had for the ride to the end of the line, Manchester Airport, clearing the track on the airport branch for me. I had a while until my required train to Crewe, the 18:11 starship, so stayed with SG, theblackwatch and Starmill, who was at the airport and also getting the tour. The doors to the 170s were unlocked after a while so I said bye and headed over to the platform that my 323 would soon arrive on. I was hoping for either 32323232323232323232 or a winner one but unfortunately it wasn't either and dud 323231 was the one working the 18:11. Now I think about it, this is the only Northern starship with a '1' in the number though. I had had one of the two motor coaches so I got in the other one for the very loud, fast run all the way to Crewe, arriving right time 23.25 miles later (which is strangely the same mileage as Leamington to Snow Hell), making 231 my highest mileage Northern 323 with 232 in close second.

The train I needed to be on to Brum, the 19:03, was running a few minutes late but I only had a few minutes to wait before the 9-car pendo arrived. I certainly wasn't happy at Virgin's choice this eve' as it was incredibly high mileage 390044 that'd be taking me to Brum. It wasn't to busy though and I easily got a decent pair of seats for the journey ahead. Due to the delay, the ex Shrewsbury 170s that are due to overtake us at Wolverhampton had left before we arrived so I wasn't able to leave 044 any sooner than planned. I didn't have long to get from New Street to Moor Street after arriving so I ran it and managed to get to Moor Street just in time. Even though this service starts from Snow Hell, I wouldn't have managed to get over there in time for it so I just hoped that it was a 4 car from Moor Street. I was horrified to see a freaking 170 coming out of the tunnel. What a ****e way to end the day! I managed to get one of the end bays of fours on 168329 though so it isn't as if I had to suffer an awful seat as well as an awful unit. I had a texting conversation with 185143 while on here and the journey passed quickly enough and I was soon leaving the rank cart and heading over to mum, who was waiting to take me home after an excellent, sociable day!

Overall, I only got one winner for haulage (175105) but had 13 shacks and a laugh with friends so I'd classify it a great day with no Nathan as he'd valued his school prom over a trip to Mancc (which does make him insane)!

At Nathan's age, a school prom would have taken priority for me too I'm afraid young man! Quite, I regularly remember bits and bobs of my end-of-secondary school one, way back in 2001...

Aside from not scoring any Metrolink trams, it was a good day for you! The Airport Pub looks like an excellent place, I *must* visit!

That was a good day! I will post a picture of the cake if anyone wants me to, along with www.virgintrains.co.uk so you can all go to Runcorn to get some!

I was indeed mortified by FQ's tiny, ice cream-less cake...

I filmed the 170s at Humphrey Park and Urmston, having only boarded a bus outside the airport pub 6 minutes before my 319 left! (Still can't believe I made that!)

At Deansgate Castlefield, lets stress that you won. Not the group :)

Thanks guys!

Tech - He would've scored several winners in Mancc (I know because he was complaining after seeing what I saw) though so it certainly wasn't worth it for an evening with loud, awful (most of it - there was only 1 decent one according to him) music which he could listen to any time if he wanted to.

185143 - If you could let me know where in Runcorn it is then I'll try and get there when I get the shack! You were certainly lucky to make that 319! Was taking the stairs 2 and 3 at a time cheating? ;)

FQ, prom isn't about the music, it's about who you're there with! From your reply, it does sound like Nathan did indeed make the wrong decision, and my post-2003 self would have gone up to Mancenion too!

Ah, OK. Mancc would certainly be more fun than a few hours from 19:00 though!

Looks like you had a great time.
Your mention of a rough pub brings to mind a couple of incidents from when I was a more frequent visitor to such places than I am now - one was in Barnsley, we walked in bang on 11am (pub opening time back then) to find a glass fight going on in one corner, with a bored looking barman cleaning glasses (they were probably need to replace the ones being broken over people's heads), looking at me and saying "Alright love, what you having?"
Secondly, a few years later (about 1990, I reckon) walking into a place in Chesterfield, again at opening time, to find the landlord, already intoxicated, wearing just his boxer shorts, a cowboy hat and cowboy boots. He took one look at me and said "By, you're a big b*****d. Alright big b*****d, I'm Don" and shook my hand (I'm 6 foot 3 and brick outhouses are built to look like me :)).
Interesting places.

Also, "Proms". An American import that didn't exist when I were a lad.

Wow! It certainly doesn't sound like you have had good experiences with some pubs! Did you just leave both immediately? Agreed about proms too - just something from America.

No on both occasions!
I suspect "Don" is no longer with us - he started to pull my pint, stopped half way through, filled a half pint glass, downed it in three gulps, then carried on filling mine.
Not a lifestyle guaranteed to see you to a ripe old age :)

A "prom" is that thing by the seaside! I do seem to recall a leaving do which involved copious quantities of Purple.Nasty - snakebite & blackcurrant...:)

Ooh, snakebite and blackcurrant, I've not had that since I was in Minehead in 2004! Good grief wasn't that a popular drink amongst us all at the time, good memories...

However let's not go there, we'll be poisioning FQ's mind at this rate...

A capital day out

As the title says, this would be a capital day out. Can you guess which? 1 in 3 chance!

Nathan and I had arranged to meet Cactustwirly on the 9th of July in...

...London! This was a Saturday and a week since seeing my last train so I was most certainly looking forward to it. This would start, as always, with the 08:25 cat to Marylebone before heading over to Paddington to meet up with Cactus and then heading to Greenford and continuing on the plan that he'd put together. The plan included quite a bit of underground but included lots of winner track for me (on both silver worm and heavy rail) and Nat.

On the morning of the 9th, I was up to my alarm at 06:50 as usual and after getting ready, I had a bit of time to pop on the forum before heading out at 07:50, picking Nathan up en route Leam. We went to buy our tickets and, as Nat is now 16, he's on adult fares. We have a family and friends’ railcard though so attempted to buy using that but were told by one of the regular ticket clerks (they all are to me to be honest!). We were then told that for that day only, there was an offer on travelcards, making it £24 for an adult and £1 for each child! Score! We split the £25 equally (each paying £12.50) and it was certainly a large saving! We were very happy at this but weren't as happy when we saw that our train to Marylebone was running 13 late. Darn it! This meant that the ex Stratford stopper (which is all shacks to Wycombe and then quite a few after there) would get in the way of ours making an even longer journey. Damn! We kicked our heels on the station for a while, glad that the read death that comes through at 08:18 won't be causing an absolute stagger fest between Leam and Banbury. The ex Stratford left Leam right time and, about 5 minutes later, we saw a DVT coming up the hill from the Warwick direction. We noticed that the cat was blue so would either be 8 or 9. It was 68008 this morning, much to Nat's disgust (he was hoping for a different one) but I was happy enough with the mileage boost, clearing it for 700 en route. I actually wrote this when Tech needed it so had to edit out the taunting :(. It was good to race between Leam and Banbury but just before Bicester, we came to a stop. Let the stagger begin...

It wasn't as bad as I thought and we only arrived at Marylebone 25 late although it did mean that our plan had been scuppered as there was no way we'd make it across to Paddington in time for the Greenford. I'd been texting Cactus while on the cat and we arranged for him to come to Marylebone and then we'd make up the plan as we went along. We were at Marylebone for less than 5 minutes, a lot of which was spent going to the cat for a minute or so and walking down the platform to the barriers (and obviously going through them).

We were at the concourse for only a couple of minutes before Cactus found us and we all headed for the Bakerloo line after deciding to first head for Charing Cross. The first one along was a pair of winners for me, 3238 and 3551 and they were taken straight to Charing Cross where we left the tube and headed for the heavy rail. I wanted to head out to Waterloo East to get a couple of winners so we scanned the departure boards and immediately headed over to the platform that had the first departure, the 10:24. This was double winner 465036 and 465028. We were on the lookout for 465/2s and /9s as they had the original traction package but didn't see any on the ride over the river. We were now going to head back to Charing Cross to get onto a departure for Lewisham where we'd change onto the DLR to get to Stratford. Nathan had requested this and I think you can guess why. I hate the AGA skodas!

Consecutive double winner 465195 and 465196 took us back to Charing Cross where we only had a minute or two to get onto the Lewisham bound train. We all ran it and I got on the train and just before Cactus and Nathan did, the doors shut and locked! Damn! Double winner 465160 and 465010 were the units and I immediately gave Cactus a call to say that I'd bail at Waterloo East and go back to Charing Cross so I told him to wait for me. As planned, I bailed at Waterloo East and checked at when the next Charing Cross one was due and found that it was in 5 minutes. I saw the PIS on the platform and smiled as it said 'formed of 12 coaches'. Sure enough, after only 2 minutes of waiting, treble winner 375901, 375927 and 375818 arrived. Not only were these all winners for haulage, but they were all scores for sight too! I was thoroughly glad at this, as I'd scored 5 winners in less than 15 minutes on a mere Charing Cross-Waterloo East leap! When I got back to Charing Cross, it was easy enough to find Nathan and Cactus and we all decided to get to Stratford now by taking the Jubilee line from Waterloo. I didn't think of getting it from Southwark until we were already on the platform for the Northern line, Cactus's last line to clear every line on the LU. We took double winner 51542 and 51543 to Waterloo where it was an easy enough change onto the Jubilee line where winner 96039 and dud(!) 96004 took us away from the centre and out towards Stratford. As we had a while until the awful skoda was due out of Stratford to Liverpool Street, we decided to bail at Canning Town to get the DLR the rest of the way. We did so and after navigating the maze that is Canning Town, we got onto the DLR platform with a wait of just under 10 minutes before the next one to Stratford! This is due to engineering works but it's still a very long wait for the DLR! When it did arrive, I wasn't too happy as it was a busy service with winner 137 and DUD 151! I'd only had 14 of them before today! We still went for them and, although I wasn't looking out of the front, I was looking out of the back of 137...

... Straight into the front of 151! Oh well! Nathan (or was it Cactus?) didn't even have a seat.

We arrived at Stratford after an uneventful run and were soon walking across to the platform that the 11:46 to Liverpool Street would go from. The grotty skoda was soon arriving with winner for both Nat and I, 90014. It was wedged and I was sorely tempted to flag it (****e traction and a wedged service) but was persuaded to get on and barely have room to move in the vestibule. Nathan managed to do some window hanging though so at least he got that. It was good to get off at Liverpool Street.

We had a quick trip to M&S here before heading to the Underground once more, this time the sub surface lines. We wanted to head for Thameslink now and do the Sutton loop so winner 21075+21076 was had over to Farringdon where we had a short wait for a Thameslink heading towards Blackfriars. This was a Brighton service with winner 377520 and dud 377501 on so I was glad that I'd managed to score something on the run to Blackfriars where we all had a wait on the same platform for the service around the Sutton loop.

This was a single 319 which I wasn't to keen on (I don't like the 319s), especially after seeing that the unit was dud 319426. We got in the declassified 1st class section at the back of the busy unit but it was still an awful interior there. Conversation turned to a discussion about tram MK3 interiors (Cactus hates the original interior which Nat and I think is the best) and the long journey didn't seem so long and we were soon leaving at shack score 1, Mitcham Junction. There is an interchange onto the Croydon tramlink here, something that none of us had done before so I was certainly looking forward to it. We left the heavy rail platforms and crossed the road bridge to get onto the Wimbledon bound tram platform. The PIS was being ridiculous here, saying that the next tram was in 21 minutes when, in reality, it was only 4 before my very first Croydon tram for haulage, 2555 arrived.

This was one of the new ones (a stadler) so it was good to get and it was a fun run on the tram down the old railway line to Wimbledon. I didn't see the only one of the Croydon trams that I'd seen previously so every one that we saw was a winner. We stayed on to Wimbledon, which was shack score 2, and then headed for South West Trains and got on the first available service towards Waterloo. This was a single 455 but it was a winner so I was OK with 5864 for the two-stop ride to Clapham Junction. Seats were found for Cactus and I but Nathan opted to stand and we were soon arriving at Britain's busiest railway station. We got off here and Cactus went for a coffee as we got some numbers. After getting his coffee, Cactus joined us and we had a few minutes spotting before deciding where to go. I wanted to do Southern to Croydon and then across to London Bridge on it for something to Cannon Street so we decided to do this and left the platform we were on at speed up the footbridge as a pair of 159s were coming. Well, I was the only one running up the stairs of the footbridge from them as Cactus was walking and Nathan staying on the platform to get the numbers (!). We went across to a departure board and saw when the next service for East Croydon was. It was cancelled (showing that we were in Southern land) but the next few would also go from this platform so we went down and waited for one of those. The 'cancelled' service wasn't actually cancelled though and it arrived a minute or so late with double winner 377133 and 377424 so we got on board for the ride to East Croydon.

After a fun enough run, spotting lots of units en route, we were arriving at East Croydon. We wandered up to the footbridge while here to see a departure board that revealed that all Southern services to London Bridge were caped so we couldn't go on that! There wasn't much else about either, with lots of Victoria services being caped, so we went for the Thameslink service that was due out a minute or so after we checked the board. We got onto the platform just as dud 377516 and winner 377207 arrived. Not only was 207 a winner for haulage but it was also a score for sight, it being my last Thameslink 377/2! This left me just needing 377213 to clear the lot of them for sight. We got on board and easily got a bay of 4 on the right hand side for our journey to Blackfriars. En route we came to a stand somewhere and, after 10 minutes, someone (I'm guessing the driver) came over the PA and said that there was a problem on the line ahead and that we'd hopefully be moving shortly. Darn it! Luckily we were moving shortly as after another 5 minutes the 377s were en route central London again. As planned, we left at Blackfriars, the plan being to get the tube two stops to Cannon Street so I could get the track out of there (dad also needs it!). We went through the barriers and, just before walking away, I turned around and saw a red 387 approaching. At first we thought it was going into the bay but as soon as we saw that it wasn't, we headed straight back onto the platform, having to be let through the barriers due to the darn things not accepting our tickets. This was my first Southern 387 (in Southern's 'Gatwick Express' branding) and was winner 387201 which was leading winner 387113. We obviously got in the new unit and it has a pretty nice interior but has the same rubbish seats. We didn't want to go one stop on this (to a required shack at City Thameslink) but instead went through to Farringdon where a platform change saw us on a pair of 387s that we'd seen earlier, winner 387127 and dud 387125. These were taken to Blackfriars where we were back on plan (not that we really had one) and headed to the circle/district lines.

A linear hop to Cannon Street was had, winner 21405+21406 working for the District line taking us to Mansion House for a shack score before winner 21511+21512 took me forward to yet another shack score at Cannon Street where we headed to the heavy rail once more. We wanted to head to Lewisham but there was a pair of 376s heading out first so we all quickly headed for them and got onto my first ever 376s, winners 376032 and 376007, for the short ride on winner track out to London Bridge.

Once we got there, a PIS was noticed to be saying that there was a late running train that called at Lewisham a couple of minutes behind the one we were to get so we decided to go one or two stops on the first one and then get the one behind forward. We were pleased to see a /2 leading the train as they had the 'old' motors so we clambered aboard winner 465241, which was leading winner 465029. We hopped off one shack down the line, New Cross, only to see that the PIS said that the one behind was 'delayed'. We quickly got back on board the pair that we had from London Bridge and it was good that we were able to as the one behind never left Cannon Street and was caped. We continued to Lewisham where we had a decision to make. We were thinking about going on a train past Hither Green as 66084, Nat's last required DBS 66 for sight in the UK, was reported to have been stored there for months. Neither of us thought that it was viewable though as there had been no reports of anyone seeing it. We still decided to head there but found that the service to Bromley North that we were planning to take was a single, pretty busy 465 so we flagged it an instead went for a Victoria bound that was a couple of minutes later. This gave me more good luck as it was double winner 465178 and 465176 on this. We were on this all the way to its terminating point at Victoria where we alighted a few minutes later. A quick photo was had before we wandered over to the concourse.

I quickly popped into Smiths for a drink and we then all headed over to the platform that a slightly delayed Southern service was leaving from. This was a single unit but was winner 377137 so I was happy enough with it. It was a busy service and had some problems leaving but eventually departed. A pnb was had on here and we took it out to Clapham Junction where we were to change over to SWT for Waterloo.

After getting back to Clapham for the second time that day, we checked a departure board and found out that there was a service that would be a 458/5 and one that would be a 450. My 450s were certainly lacking and I hadn't been on them for ages, unlike the 458s. Cactus hadn't tried one of the 'new' 458s so wanted to go for that so we arranged to split up for a couple of minutes and meet up again at Waterloo. Both services were due out at the same time so it made no difference and double winner 450085 and 450567 conveyed Nat and I to Waterloo where we headed over to the platform that Cactus's single 458 was due to arrive on. He met us at the barriers and, as we didn't have too long until our train back to Leam now, we couldn't do much so it was a case of deciding what to do. Cactus wanted to get a 165 out to Ealing Broadway from Padd and then head back in so we went for that and headed to the jub-lee line for winner 96076 and dud (I'm not having much luck with the Jubilee line today!) 96025 out to Baker Street where a change onto the sub surface lines got us onto winner 21341+21342 for the rest of the journey to Paddington.

Nathan has this weird rule that he won't get a DMU out of Paddington (an EMU is fine for some reason) but it seems that this is easily broken (if you call winging and idle threats about not going out to Ealing easy) as he eventually got on winner 165111 with mucho complaining. What is even weirder than Nat's rule though? GWR 165s are Cactus's favorite traction! I'll not go into that now as I’ve done so enough times ;). It wasn't a pleasant ride out to Ealing but I scored a 165 and a winner shack at Ealing Broadway. We wanted to get a Heathrow Connect back in but if we waited for one then we wouldn't make our train back from Marylebone so winner 165120 was taken back instead, much to Nat's disgust. Oh well - at least it's a winner (for me that is).

Back at Paddington, we had to say bye to Cactus here as his train back home would leave shortly. It had been a great day out with him and we are planning to meet up again soon but in a different location! Nat and I headed back over to the tube platforms and onto the first available one to get us to Baker Street, winner 21552+21551. It was then the usual annoying transfer to the Bakerloo line for winner 3552 and dud 3262. Had my luck run out?

The answer to that question? No! We got onto the platform for the 18:10, the usual DVT at the back and I leapt into the air after seeing the cat that was on the front. Nat wasn't too pleased but I was over the moon (not literally - I'm not an astronaut) to see 68014 on the front of our train. Gingertom thrash!

We didn't get wedged out in the usual bay of 4 and it was a brilliant run with some excellent thrash, ending at Leamington an hour and a quarter/89 miles later. When we got off at Leam and headed to the front of the loco, several photos were taken (by me. The '4' on GT had faded but a different one has been put on now so it is 68014 instead of 6801diagonalline.

Nat's mum was waiting in the car park and we clambered into the car after a great day out. Thanks to Cactustwirly for helping to make it brilliant - I'm pretty sure that if I was solo the day would have comprised solely of Charing Cross-Waterloo East leaps!

I still find it weird that my train was early (on a line with a bad reputation for its reliability) and your's was late

Anyway it was a really enjoyable day, with some new trackage on southeastern
