Ah, yep! You're right! It was an ex Scarborough (to Liverpool). Thanks for the gen on St Peters Square! too!

If the 19:41 was a 221 then it wouldn't have been a taxi I'm afraid to say. It would have been a travelodge !

Just get on the vomit comet. How do you know they are so bad if you haven't ever been on one?

Yep, it would have been the bus!

Another trip with Nathan, once again on our home turf! It was Saturday the 23rd of January when we decided to do a WMDT, with one aim in mind. I was planning on heading to Brum in the afternoon for an hour anyway so it made sense to make a day of it. So what was my main aim for today? Bordesley!

I woke at 06:50 to my alarm clock and immediately got up, ready for the day ahead. After getting ready and having a little time on the forum, it was time to head out, leaving an hour after I'd got up. Nathan was picked up en route and we got to Leam station with good time to get a return to Solihull and onto the platform. The plan was to buy our WMDTs on the train because they can't issue them at Leam station for some reason. Our first train today is the 08:23 to Snow Hell. This service is usually formed of a 168 (sometimes 3 coach, sometimes 4 coach) and a 2 coach Chiltern 172 but the 172 wasn't part of the formation today, it being solo 168111 instead. We got on in the front door of it and I saw that one of the bay of 4s that wasn't above the engine was free. Since it was a fairly busy service (it had lost two coaches), we sat down and couldn't be bothered to see the guard to get the daytripper so we left 111 at Solihull and I went to get daytrippers for Nat and I. There was someone in front of me in the queue and the ticket clerk had to get some more of the blue ticket stock but even with that I only just missed the 168 that we'd just come on from Leam. 'Just missed' means that I got on the platform just as the 168's doors locked! And furthermore, it left on time! I went to Nathan and we waited for the train that would take us to shack score 1, Rowley Regis. It was already my highest mileage LM 172, 172340. Rowley Regis was a request by Nathan, purely because of what we'd get back. The journey went smoothly (well, as smooth as a 172 can get) and we were soon on the Brum bound platform at Rowley Regis. I leapt in the air after seeing the DVT number of the approaching cat. 82305! Yes! 82305 was the DVT working with Gingertom! I looked at the number of the cat and then got pretty (OK. Very.) annoyed. It was 68012, not 014! Nathan was delighted, it being his lowest mileage Chiltern one because it hadn't been working for a while. In that case it was good I guess!

There were quite a few enthusiasts on it this morning and it was a nice, thrashy run home to Leam, where we had a -1 onto the Brum bound 168. Unfortunately the 168 was running dead on time so there was only one alternative. The 10:32 165. It wasn't a nice alternative but dud 165023 would get us back to Brum before anything else. We got a seat right up front so there wasn't much engine noise and it was an uneventful stagger back to Brummingham Moor Street. It arrived at about 11:15 and, with Nat wanting to take the 11:55 to Leam for cat 13 back to Birmingham, he didn't have time to do any other trains. We decided to head to the Ian Allen bookshop. I wanted to check the 11:30 to Euston first, to see if one of my last few Pendos was on it, and Nat agreed so I headed onto the platform to see that winner 390042 was there. Nathan was OK with me going for it so I said bye to him and boarded. A simple International leap later, with dud 390148 providing the power back, I was heading back over to Moor Street, with three shacks in mind - Small Heath, Tyseley and Acocks Green. The 12:19 to Dorridge was due imminently so I got aboard 172331 for the ride to Solihull, after checking RTT. It was a short wait at Solihull before the 12:37, which was formed of 172343. It didn't take long to get to shack number 2, Acocks Green. I had a +7 here onto the 12:49, which had to be taken to Olton. This was 172334 and whilst having a PNB, I missed the cat that Nat was on back to Brum. I gave him a call, telling him to get on the 13:09 from Moor Street (Whitlocks End bound) and that I'd meet him at Small Heath Anyway, I got off 334 at Olton and, after a mini wait, 172331 rolled in for the second time today. This was my chariot to shack 3, Small Heath. It was a +10 here before Nathan's 172 was due to arrive so I got out of the way and didn't stray from the station (I didn't want to be brutally murdered). 172217 arrived right time and I met up with Nathan on board. I was on here for 1 stop (Nat two) to Tyseley (shack 4), where a +15 had to be endured. It wasn't so bad with company and we got to see a betty scream through while waiting which was great. It was the 13:31 from Tyseley that we were going for and it's the one and only service that stops at Bordesley per week. Well, most weeks. Not this week though! This week loads of services are stopping because whatever football club is near there is playing. This means that LM wants to stop lots of services there to transport the 'rioters' (fans) there and back. Anyway, it was 172222 working the very first Bordesley stopper of the week, which we were on to Moor Street. Nathan doesn't 'shack attack' so he didn't really care about getting Bordesley and decided to go for the 13:55 cat out to Solihull instead. I said bye and headed over for the 13:50, which had 172214 on. This was taking me to shack 5, Bordesley, completing a line of shacks from Bicester North/Heyford to Rowley Regis! I got a couple of photos there before beading back to Moor Street on 172217.
How many trains a week? by fishquinn1, on Flickr
It was then over to Meal Deal to get lunch for the two of us before heading back to Moor Street to meet Nat. The 14:34 to Snow Hell was due so we got on 168005 for the very short ride through the tunnel to its destination before waiting for the 14:43 to Jewellery Quarter with 172214. Now it was time for some tram bashing!

Right. Was anyone wondering what the title was about? Well, today had both light rail and heavy rail so I decided on 'weights'. Please bear in mind that I was on a pendo from New Street to Crewe when I thought of it so my mind was elsewhere. Anyway, I needed all of the shacks on the Midland Metro from West Bromwich Central to Wolverhampton St Georges except The Royal so my hope was to get a few of those along with a few winner trams. First up was dud 33 to The Hawthorns for dud 23 to Winson Green Outer Circle. Now onto the shacks! First up was dud 26 to shack 1 on the midland metro - Dartmouth Street. I was wondering if I'd get to Devon by following the road but didn't want to risk it, not only because dud 35 was along almost instantly to take us one stop back to shack 2, Lodge Road. Then it was forward another three stops to Black Lake on dud 22. What a ridiculous name for a station in Dudley! There isn't a lake here, let alone a polluted one! Anyway, we had to be careful at our next station, which dud 25 took us to. Why? This was shack 4 on the metro, Dudley Street Guns Village. We weren't too eager to be shot so we made sure that there weren't any people with guns stood on the platform before alighting. We both remembered from when we did the route that there was a car park next to Wednesbury Great Western Street stop where you could get the numbers of stuff in the depot. So, wanting to get more time there, we took dud for the day 23 for a two stop run alighting at the stop in Wednesbury where you can get two kinds of trams - Midland Metro and Great Western Railway ones! Saying that we were irritated to see that the car park is staff only is an understatement. I saw one of my tram requirements heading towards Birmingham while waiting for the next one towards Wolves, dud 20. This was taken two stops up to Bradley Lane, an island platform. The question is, how do you pronounce this stop? Bray-dley lane or Brad-ley lane? Anyway, it was dud for the day 26 back to Wednesbury Parkway (shack score 7) where my first tram winner appeared in the form of 34. The guard came down the tram and checked our tickets before asking me a question that I really wasn't expecting.
"Weren't you at Doncaster on the 4th of September 2014"? And yes, I was! He was an enthusiast that I'd talked to there and he had one heck of a good memory! Nat and I chatted with him until we left the tram at Bilston Central, the only tram stop on the Midland Metro that has staggered platforms. Even with this, it was easy enough to change in time for tram 23, for the third time of the day, this time to Loxdale. The plan was to go up to Priestfield, back to the Crescent and then forward to Wolves but it'd be a 10-minute wait at Priestfield so we continued to The Royal on dud 35 before taking dud for the day 34 back to the Crescent and then dud 21 onward to Priestfield. It turns out that we had a 10-minute wait here anyway but with no-one around, Nat put some '80s tunes on his phone and, in no time, winner 28 arrived to take us to my last Midland Metro shack, Wolverhampton St Georges. Mission complete!

The route to Wolverhampton station was poorly signposted but I could tell from the signs that were there where we had to go (strangely). We got to the station and, having just missed a Pendo, we headed over to the far side platform for ex Liverpool dud 350247, which was on the 17:00 to New Street. We would have a while to wait in Brum before the 17:55 from Moor Street so we decided to head to Moor Street via Smethwick. The dez was taken to the bat cave where a platform change was required before the 17:25 to Smethwick Galton Bridge. This was duds 158830 and 158828. We got a couple of seats in the latter for the short ride. A quick platform change here saw us onto 172340 for the second time today, pushing it even further up the mileage table (because this was the second time we'd had it today). Moor Street was our destination on this, where a +4 was had onto the waiting Marylebone train. This had double duds 168321 (sorry Tech!) and 168329 so we sat right in the front of 321 for the uneventful ride home, where Nat's dad was waiting for the ride to my boat and Nat's house.

All in all, a very successful day! Not many winner units but 17 winner shacks and the Midland Metro cleared for both shacks and track. Also, many thanks to Nathan for enduring the mega shack scoring on the metro!

An excellent trip there, I like a nice mix of light and heavy rail, I must admit.

A most productive time there, that's for sure. Did I also notice no moaning from Nat? ;)

168321 will be mine eventually, as will the rest of the /3s. There is a mega Chiltern shack scoring trip to come by December 2017, when I also hope to get through the 165/0s. All in good time...

Hi did start moaning after the first few shacks on the trams, that's for sure!

December 2017? I think that's slightly optimistic! December 2018 maybe ;)

Well I say by December 2017 as I could then tag on a bash around London, start on all these new trains you know before Kite clears them all ;)

That sounds like a good plan! Get 10 or so in the book before Kite gets them all!

The 165/0s?

I need 5 to clear the class, although they are quite hard to pin down as some don't call within the zones (running fast to Gerrards Cross & beyond) :)

I meant the new trains for London (700s/701s)! I need 11 Chiltern 165s, 7 of which are 3 coach ones!

I will probably leave the 700s for a few months to allow more to enter service before having a good session. Although needing no GTR shacks means my options will be more limited as I won't get units doing station moves.

No longer in London
I can see those 700s being right pains to get, especially if, like me, you are after mileage on them. The eight cars will not be too bad as they'll be on a lot of the suburban workings but the 12-cars will be a different matter until London Bridge is open. It'll be alright for the "Bus Stop Bash Boys" who will be able to get them in the core but us Mileage Men will either have to put up with slow totters over Herne Hill of hopefully get lucky outside the Zones.

Another great read there Fishquinn, and a hearty congratulations on scoring Bordesley. There can't be too much around the West Midlands left for you to get.

I need 9 shacks in the WMDT area, with another 14 in the add on bit.

London, Vancouver, Shanghai, New York

I found some absolute bargain tickets for Heathrow Express about 3 months ago while looking on-line. I let Yorkie know and asked him to share them with anyone that could make use of them. Then, that evening, Samgeorge965 asked if Nat and I would like to use them with him. Heathrow Express is one TOC that I've been wanting to use for ages, needing all of the 332s (and all of the Connect 360s), along with the track from Airport junction to all of the terminals so that was a definite yes! February (yep, I'm already in Feb for my trip reports!) the 13th (a Saturday) worked for all of us so we arranged to do it then, with us all heading to London on the 08:24 from Leam, Samgeorge joining at The Hawthorns.

After a long, tedious week of work, Saturday finally came and I was up at 06:50 again, just like my last Saturday outing. I did exactly the same things that I'd done 3 weeks previously - teeth cleaned, bag packed (this time including my LU stockbook - Videoscene 2015 London Underground guide) and all other tasks before going on the forum. Then at 07:50 (the same time as last time if that wasn't obvious!), we headed out picking Nat up on the way. Then, after getting tickets, dad still with us at this point, we went in a different way from last time, heading through the subway and onto platform 3 instead of platform 2. Of the cats currently operating on silver sets, the one I wanted was 68015 because it was my lowest mileage one at the time so I was hoping that it'd appear. I had my fingers crossed as I saw the DVT approaching, which was after watching one of Nathan's last few DBS 66s come through on a liner. Yes! 82301! The one that was with Topcat! And sure enough, it was 68015 pushing the first southbound cat of the morning. I'd been texting with SG (this is how I'm going to refer to him in the trip report as it's much easier) all morning so I knew that he was in the back coach and after boarding, we found his bay of four on the left hand side. I was sat in the backward facing seat, with Nathan and SG in the forward facing ones and, apart from being stuck behind 66199 (Nathan's winner 66) between Leam and Banbury, it was a rather uneventful journey. Some good thrash was had from Topcat and GT was sat spare at Wembley but other than that, not much decent stuff was spotted before arriving at Marylebone. SG hadn't traveled on a Chiltern cat before this and had only traveled on the Scotty ones so this was a good way to start! I still remember when I had my first cat. The Banbury set from Bicester North to Banbury with 68008.

Anyway, at Marylebone SG and Nathan went to get a couple of photos of the cat but unfortunately my camera had run out of charge so I couldn't take photos. No brekky today because after getting through the barriers it was straight down to the sole tube line that Marylebone has (the Bakerloo) and onto the first arrival, double winners 3567 and 3237. They were fairly empty so we easily got one of the bays of 4, which is something I like about the '72 stock. We were only on them for 58 chains though to Paddington where it was up to the grand Brunel terminus. I've only ever been on trams leaving Paddington so it was weird to head over to the platform for the 10:10 to Heathrow terminal 5. We were traveling in style and boarded the coach closest to the blocks on winner (I'm sure you couldn't tell that my first 332 would be a winner!) 332008.There were RPIs stood at the door closest to the concourse checking 1st class passengers so we entered via the second door, not wanting to draw attention to the tickets that we had. Two bays of two (with a table between the two seats) were sourced, Nathan in the left one, SG and I in the right and we waited for departure of the 'fresh air carrier'. It felt really weird leaving Paddington without some thrash from MTU engines. 66200, my last DBS 66 in the UK required for sight, had been at Acton the day before so I was hoping to see it but it seems that it decided to avoid me again. I noticed one of my last 7 GWR powercars at the country end of Padd as we left, which was a pain but, unlike Nathan, I didn't let something like that annoy me. After all, I was having a soche day with guaranteed winners, shacks and track! The guard came through the train immediately after departure and didn't bat an eyelid at the price of our tickets, which was good. I'm not going to say what tickets we had or the price of them so they don't get discovered though.

Anyway, it was onto the winner track after airport junction and after about a meter after peeling away the GWML we went into a tunnel and zipped along until arriving at the service's first stop at Heathrow terminal 1, 2 and 3. The train's automated announcement said that it was for zones 1 and 3 but railmiles said that it was for zones 2 and 3, with Realtimetrains saying that 1 and 2 was the correct one so we had no idea what was right. So I'm going to put 1, 2 and 3 just to cover all available options! After a brief stop there, it continued through the tunnel to its terminating station at Heathrow Terminal 5. Since we were heading back out on this 332 to terminals 1, 2 and 3, we wanted to stay in our seats but the guard came though to us and asked where we were heading. We told him that we were heading to terminals 1, 2 and 3, as that was the plan, before he began questioning why we hadn't left the train there. We said why but he didn't buy it and kept on asking us why. Then he said that we had to leave the train because passengers weren't allowed on! As other passengers were boarding! SG asked if he could leave his stuff in the seat but the guard didn't understand why and said no! We left the train and then just re-boarded again but in standard class instead for the short ride to shack number two, Heathrow terminals 1, 2 and 3/Heathrow Central. It was a simple cross platform change onto a waiting dez. I was expecting it to be 360205 because it was the terminal 4 shuttle but it wasn't and my first Heathrow Connect 360 was in fact 360201. We got a bay of four for the short ride through the long, extended tunnel. No guard came through to chuck us off this time and after a short turn around time the 360 headed back towards the main station. I noticed that the Heathrow Connect 360s have the same announcement voice as the LM dezzes. When it beings talking you half expect it to say that it's going to London Euston, not Heathrow terminal 4! We'd worked out a little plan so after leaving the dezzy, we crossed to the other platform, ready for another 'fresh air carrier' to Paddington. This was winner 332003 and it was quite full even in 1st. We had to sit in three separate single seats, me in one on the right hand side facing forwards, Nathan and SG being a couple of backwards facing ones on the right. All of the other seats were taken! I wonder how many planes arrived at Heathrow at about 10:00.

The guard came through but didn't notice the price on our tickets and after a short, uneventful journey it was arriving at Paddington. Now, since our tickets were 1st class, it was time to go to the Padd 1st class lounge! SG had been before but it was a first time for Nat and I. Nathan had never been in a first class lounge (probably because he'd only ever pay for scum class!) but I'd been in the New Street one before so I wasn't sure if it'd be better or worse. There was no one waiting to check our tickets on entrance and on one first check I'd decided that Paddington lounge was much better. There were mini croissants, Pain au Chocolate (which in English is not actually referred to as 'chocolate bread'. It's referred to as 'pain au chocolate') and pain au raisin (which in English is not actually referred to as raisin bread. It's referred to as 'pain to raisins'. No. Sorry. 'pain au raisin'). There was fruit there too and all kinds of drinks in some chillers, along with a coffee machine. Unfortunately, there wasn't a free mini costa where I'd get...

A pain au chocolate (which in English is not actually referred to as chocolate bread... OK, fine. I'll stop.), a pain au chocolate and a croissant along with a bit of orange juice and a hot chocolate made from the coffee machine. We then sat down for a bit before having to leave the first class lounge in order to collect tickets for another 1st class return to Heathrow, this time only to central. My third 332 was sat at the blocks, this one being 332005. It'd be a short wait at Heathrow terminals 1, 2 and 3 for my fourth, and final 332 of the day. This would be another winner and giving a consecutive number from the previous one, it was 332006. Since all three of us had travelcards, we decided to make use of these, now that we had got all but one of the fresh air carriers out today. So once back at Paddington we descended down the main steps to the underground just to take one look and go back up...

Because we wanted the Hammersmith and City line! Useless signs!

Announcements were saying that there was a majorly reduced train service due to a fatality at Slough and it turns out that it was a tram that we watched leave towards Temple Meads. Maybe it's best to get off the GWML now anyway then! Anyway, after walking the 100 miles to the Hammersmith and city line platforms, we had to wait for a train that was due in 1 minute. 5 minutes later a tube arrived. They were all terminating at Kings Cross St Pancras today due to engineering works, meaning that there was no circle line and no Hammersmith and City/Metropoliton between Kings Cross and somewhere. The first Hammersmith and City set to arrive was a rather full winner, this being 21552+21551, with SG and I being able to get a seat with Nathan deciding to stand. It emptied out slightly before Kings Cross, where we were all off this one in the hope to do a Finsbury Park leap. After getting to the concourse, the first thing I heard was the deep throb of an MTU engine coming from one of the tram sets there. OK, fine. That's an obvious lie. The first thing I heard was the jabbering of plastic Polly over the tannoy. But then you had the trams! None of my winner powercars were there to taunt me but a couple (3 to be precise!) of Nathan's were there. Two options now. Don't tell him where we're going and what we're going on or endure the moaning. The latter was chosen (I know. I'm crazy.) and we headed over to the 13:22 to Peterborough, the doors being unlocked at about 13:20. And it waited there. And waited. And waited. And wait... OK. This is getting old. But apparently the train crew wouldn't appear and that was the reason we left Kings Cross at about 11:35 on winner 365517. After the late departure, there wasn't much to note about the journey and it was shortly arriving at Finsbury Park. From here we had two options. Go to Moorgate on one of my hated types of unit or head back to the cross on a 365. I wanted to go for the 'Smiler' so we waited for that. Unfortunately it wasn't an 8 coach one and was instead formed of solo winner 365503. Whilst on board this, we all decided on a plan of what to do after getting back to The Cross. Nathan wouldn't stop talking about Anglia's rubbishy skodas but, with the mk3s being very decent stock, I agreed and we decided to head across to Liverpool Street next. With the direct route on the tube being closed, we had to descend to a very low level on the tube and get onto the Northern line. Our destination on winners 51590 and 51589 was a place that we could have simply taken the pair of 313s to from Finsbury Park but it would have been a nicer journey to my first winner tube shack of the day anyway. This was obviously Moorgate and with no way to get to Liverpool Street by tube because of the closure, SG looked at how to get between the two by foot and we decided to head over there that way. It took less than 5 minutes to get over there and one look at the departure board showed that there was something wrong. There wasn't a 14:30 or a 15:00 to Norwich and at another look, there wasn't any Shenfield, Southend or Shoeburyness services seither! Sssss...

We went to take a look at the higher numbered platforms and then saw that there wasn't a train there at all! Not one! It turns out that there was major engineering works so no services were running on the GEML past Stratford! There were hundreds of 379s in the lower numbered platforms though, some just stabled and others waiting to work services so, since we were here, we decided to do my first ever Tottenham Hale leap. I also needed a PNB so I went in search of a toilet on winner 379019 as Nathan and SG found us seats. I joined them for the run along winner track to shack score 4 of the heavy rail stuff (Heathrow 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 being the first 3), Tottenham Hale. It feels like you exit London on part of this route and, if I was placed on a train here, not knowing where I was, before having ever traveling the route, I'd probably say I was on a train in a Camebridgeshire field! Anyway, we entered civilization again (if Tottenham counts) and after leaving the train, it was a short wait, flagging a 317 heading towards Liverpool Street, before winner 379001 rolled in. 3 seats were sourced for the fast run and that ended my very first Tottenham Hale leap! We didn't know where to head to next but SG said that Paddington 1st class lounge does some very nice cakes around this time and, with valid 1st class tickets from Paddington, we decided that that's how we'd spend the remainder of the afternoon. It was now time to decide how to get there! There wasn't a way to get there directly so instead of going for the sub-surface stuff, we went deep underground for my first ride on the Central line! The first train to arrive was quite busy but, knowing that it wouldn't get any better, we boarded anyway for the ride underneath the city, alighting from the busy service at Oxford Circus. Nathan had gone up the wrong stairs so I could only ID the front two sets (because they're the two that I could ID at Liverpool Street) of this one. SG and I had to run up the stairs to get him and didn't get back down onto the platform until the 1992 stock and vanished. Winners 92305 and 92064 were the two front sets though so at least I can record them! We headed to the far end of the platform (the end that 91305 would have been at when it arrived) in order to get onto some stairs that led to the Bakerloo line. First up heading in the Queen's Park direction was winners 3534 and 3265 so we got a bay of 4 in one of them for the tunnel ride, going onto dud track for the day (I've had all of the track on this section at one point or another) after Marylebone. It eventually arrived at Paddington and we headed up to the platform and entered the 1st class lounge at about 15:45, giving Nathan and I about an hour before our train away from London. Sure enough, when we entered the lounge, where there was various pasteries earlier on, there was now crisps and some excellent looking cakes. There was a green one, that none of us knew what it was (even after SG went for a slice of it!) but it was the Victoria sponge that got my attention! There was half a slice that wasn't intact to the rest so I went for that one along with a full slice, also getting a pack of crisps and another glass of orange juice before heading over to the chairs and sitting down to eat our afternoon tea. SG loaded his laptop up and went on the forum for a bit while chatting to me and the hour seemed to fly by and before we knew it, it was 16:40.

SG was booked on a 'Merdeian' to Sheffield at about 18:00 so he'd decided to stay in the lounge for a bit. We said bye after a fantastic day with him before heading over to the Underground for a bakerloo line silver worm back to Marylebone. This was a first for Nathan and I. Why? Well, this is the first time that we'd travelled on a tube solo! So, to commemorate this, I decided that a liniar bash was in order to Marylebone. The first arrival was winners 3231 and 3560 to the winner shack at Edgeware Road before waiting on the platform for a minute for the next, winners 3244 and 3557. These were taken to Marylebone, finishing our travelcard after a great day out. The 17:10 to Snow Hell was already in the platform with 68015 providing traction once again. Nathan and I were in the very front coach (the quiet coach) on this service, so to maximize cat noise, and we had a bay of four to ourselves. At about 17:05, 4 normals that had been out shopping for the day in London boarded and sat in the bay of four next to us and began shouting at each other across the table and laughing at things that weren't even funny. This was really annoying especially considering that it was the quiet coach. By 17:15 the cat was still sat at Marylebone and the engine had shut down for some reason. This wasn't good! The normals were still jabbering on and it was getting very annoying. By 17:20 the cat's engines had started up again but an Aylesbury stopper via Princes Risborough had been let out in front of us. Then, at 17:25, the guard came over the PA and said that there was a problem with the train and that he wasn't sure when it'd leave. He then said that passengers for High Wycombe could change trains and take the 17:35 to Oxford Parkway instead, which stops at Wycombe. He wasn't sure what would leave first but he advised passengers to do that. The normals, who were still shouting across the table, probably heard 'High Wycombe' and asked me what the guard had said. I told them and they got all of their bags together and left the cat. Silence at last! I tried not to laugh but it was really hard not too because just after they left the train, the doors shut and locked and the cat began to move, thrashing away towards Brum!

The cat was running about 17 down out of Marylebone and, with a +12 at Snow Hell onto our cart back to Leam, this wasn't good news! Unless we made up time, we might have to leave the train at Moor Street and only get 111.25 miles instead of 112 miles! Topcat raced on but had caught the 165 they let out in front of us before High Wycombe. This wasn't good news either! Thankfully it was out of our way by Princes Risborough and after Princes Risborough, the cat gave a Princely run and it arrived at Banbury only 7 down! Then the cat thundered away into the darkness yet again, leaving Leamington only 5 minutes late. Warwick Parkway was the same but by Solihull the cat was a mere 3 minutes down! And departure from Moor Street was on time, as was arrival at Snow Hell. What a cracking run! We watched top cat thunder away into the distance on its way to Stourbridge ECS before heading down to platform and getting on much less appealing 168001, which was working the 19:14 to Marylebone, and our last train home. A bay of 4 in the very back was sourced and it was just us two in it all of the way back to Leamington, where Jackie, Nat's mum was waiting.

One heck of a great day there for sure!

Yes the H&C is a long walk, there used to be an overbridge between platforms 13/14 and 15/16(H&C), but that was demolished when the platforms were rebuilt. Here's a shortcut I take, use the ramp between platforms 7/8 and that takes you up near the Taxi rank.

The info board on the H&C lines are also extremely helpful! They only show "check front of train"

Sounded like a good day in London. Although a bit hard to read with the wall of text (paragraphs help the eyes) :)

You're becoming more prolific than Kite! Good reads - great day out in Manchester there. Congrats on the tram shacks, and I must check out that Ian Allen shop in Brum next time I'm up there...

Another excellent read, and glad to see you enjoyed your HEx bash. I need to do it again myself, it's been too long since I did it last. I honestly can't remember when it was, I think June 2010 was the last time I did a 332 bash but only between the terminals. On one out of Paddytoon, that really is going back...

A decent day out, and that was quite a performance out of 68015!

They are good fun, that's for sure! How many do you need?

I fully agree - a mega thrashy run too!

Midlands mayhem!

As the title says, today was another day in the Midlands! But today was with company, and not Nathan's! It was February the 15th and fellow forum member and trip reporter Techniquest was in the Midlands. I was planning to head to Brum anyway so I asked if he wanted to meet up. Since he was planning to get Polesworth in by staying at a hotel in Rugby (or a sad excuse for a hotel if I were to ask Tech ;)) he wouldn't be free for a while and with me heading to Brum with dad, that gave me a bit of time to do some unit bashing before hand. So, to the main report...

My day started at stupid o' clock in the morning (I'm not even going to say the time because I'll then realize how crazy I am) and I was up and ready to head out by xx:40 (I'm not going to say the time again but I'll let you know that it was 7 hours after I went to bed the previous night). I helped dad prepare his morning coffee and by xx:50 we were de-icing the car, ready for the off. The morning drive to Leam was the same as usual and after parking the car, we had a nice 5-minute walk to start the day...

in the freezing cold. Oh well, at least I had a coat! The station was reached with about 10 minutes until the 06:26 to Snow Hell was due, giving me ample time to get a return to Brum. It was dud 165028 working our service this morning and the gen was passed on to Tech in case it was required. We managed to get our usual bay of two in the front of the train and after an uneventful run spent chatting with dad, the cart was approaching Snow Hell. On the way over to Subway, tram 29 was spotted at Bull Street waiting to work a service to Wolverhampton. I let Tech know this as well and it turns out that both the 165 and the tram (both duds for me) were needed for him! Anyway, we got our usual two mega melts in Subway before heading over to dad's work to eat brekky and check the forums and stuff. I spent a nice time with him before saying bye at about 07:55 so I'd have time to get my daytripper and view the 08:10 to Euston to see if a winner was on it. A nice walk down Corporation street, seeing how well Midland Metro were progressing with the route and stations (not at all!) on my way, I eventually arrived at the bat cave. After getting my daytripper, I headed over to platform 1 to view the 08:10, which was a dud 11 coach. The 08:15 to Preston was also a dud 11 coach, the 08:14 staggerer to Euston a dud dez and the 08:25 to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli was a pair of dud 158s. I'm off to a wonderful start! The 08:27 to Walsall was dud, as was the 08:39 to Wolves, two services that arrive about 15 minutes before they're booked out (on a through service!). A dud 9-coach pendo was waiting to form the 08:30 to Euston so I wandered over to the platform that the 08:30 to Cardiff was booked from, hoping for a winner 170. Yes! Winner 170112! Oh, hang on. It's a pair! Excellent! Winner 170113! Don't you love it when TOCs put out consecutive winners?

These took me to University and with 2.5 miles secured off each; I left the train, thankfully not to study and attend tedious lectures, but to head back to New Street. It was dud 170110 providing the power for the journey back.

Before heading out on the 170s, I'd noticed the service that forms the 08:50 to Euston arriving. This had 390156 on, one that I know that I've had before but can't for the life find it in my books so have no mileage recorded off it. This was very irritating so getting that one would be very good, even if it is just 8.25 miles out to the airport. 110 came to a stand at New Street (on the 'A' end of the platform) at 08:46, giving me 4 minutes to run to the 'B' end, over navigation street footbridge and onto the pendo. I didn't hesitate and was on 390156 by 08:48. Departure was right time and a speedy journey to International was had. There was a pair of 158s in platform 5 waiting to leave on the 09:09 to Holyhead and after going to view them I saw that one of the 158s was a winner! I decided that I'd take them to New Street if the dez on the 09:05 wasn't required and if the dez was required then I'd take that to New Street for the 158s to Smethwick. It turns out that it was the second option because winner 350108 was in charge of the LM to New Street. I was on a roll!

An uneventful ride to Starship central was had, where a platform change had to take place so I was in a good waiting position for the 09:25 to Smethwick. Even though I knew what it'd be, I was still glad to see dud 158832 and winner 158834 arriving. I took a seat in the latter for the short ride to Smethwick, just missing the trio of 158s heading to International. Hardly matters though! The Walsall stopper was up next but that was a dud dez so I waited an extra minute for the ex Liverpool which was another dud dez. I didn't want to wait at Galton Bridge any longer though so I took 350371 back to the bat cave and looked at my options. Number 1 was to fester at New Street to see if any winners appeared and wait for Tech, who was planning to get the 10:20 from Lichfield Trent Valley. Because of this, my second option was a little shack score on the Lichfield branch, needing everything between and including Gravely Hill and Lichfield City except Four Oaks. I waited 15 minutes so I could view both the 10:10 to Euston and the 10:15 to Edinburgh but they were both duds so I decided to go for the shack score and after texting Tech to say what my plan was, I boarded 323201 on the 10:15 to Four Oaks. I decided to take this one to Erdington, where I'd just missed one heading towards Birmingham. Oh well! Doesn't matter! I still changed platforms, which involved going down a long ramp onto the pavement, under the railway on the road bridge and then up onto the Brum bound platform via some steep and not very nice stairs. There was a manned ticket office on that platform so I got myself a cross city line timetable and looked at how many shacks I could get before Tech's service was due to arrive. I could get Gravely Hill on a liniar bash with a 10-minute fester there for Tech's service so I decided to do that. But then I noticed another thing on the timetable and very quickly changed platforms, just as 323210 was arriving and let Tech know that I'd be getting on his train at Chester Road. This gave me extra mileage, a smaller fester, more time with Tech and an easier shack to get from Brum (Gravely Hill). It was easy enough to change platforms there and get down the platform to board at the door that Tech said he was sat next to. 323206 and 323208 arrived 2 down and I boarded in the front door of the rear unit and met up with Tech, who hadn't had a great morning! He'd got Polesworth but had missed the bus to Tamworth so was a lot later than planned. I understand that this is old news and, because of this, I'd like to make it clear that I'm not a writer for 'The Railway Magazine'. We had a bay of four for the journey back to New Street and it was nice to have some company that doesn't moan about being on a starship for the whole journey!

Tech said that the 11:15 from Moor Street to Marylebone was an ex TPE 170 the last time that he saw it so we decided to head over to view that in case it was 168321 or 168324, Tech needing the former, me needing the latter. So after getting off the starships at the bat cave, we exited the station and headed over to Moor Street, getting in position on platform 1. The Marylebone service was announced and soon headlights were illuminating the tunnel and 168214 pulled in. Boring! We didn't take it and instead just went back onto the street and took the short walk to Bull Street tram stop just as a tram was approaching. This was dud for both of us 33. For the purpose of the report I'll mention if any of the trams was required for either of us. If I don't say anything then it was dud for both of us. Anyway, 33 was taken for the hop out to Soho Benson Road. En route, one of Tech's winners was spotted heading to Bull Street so 23 was taken to Jewellery Quarter to intercept it on its way back to Wolves. Winner for Tech 24 was taken out to The Hawthorns and it was then a little wait for another winner for Tech, this time 30, which was taken to Winson Green Outer Circle. The next one back was 25 so we boarded for the ride back to The Hawthorns. For a fill in move before the next one to Wolverhampton, 34 was taken one stop towards Brum to Handsworth Booth Street before 30 appeared for the second time, taking us away from the main line and onto the tram only stretch. This one took us to West Bromwich for 36 back to Kenrick Park. It was then a short wait for yet another dud for us both, number 20. Lodge Road was our destination on this one before what we thought would be 29, the one that I'd seen earlier at Bull Street. But we were wrong because it was 33, the first tram we'd been on! This meant that 29 was probably the one tram that we'd not got the number of so instead of taking this back to Brum, we took it to Trinity Way for 34 to Dartmouth Street and finally what we thought would be 29. Nope! It was 32! This tended to indicate that 29 had headed to depot after it'd done stuff in the morning peak. Oh well! At least Tech got two of his required ones (I didn't get any of my last 3 - 17, 19 and 37)! The next one up was 25 again and, having just missed a 172 at The Hawthorns, this one was taken to Jewellery Quarter where we had a smaller wait for a 172. The reason we hadn't just gone through to Bull Street is because we were both in dire need of a PNB, the trams not being equipped with toilets. There was a Dorridge train due in 8 minutes and after a short wait, 172333 arrived. Tech didn't need any coaches in this one so we just got into the one with the disabled bog for the short ride to Snow Hell.

By now a costa move was needed for both of us and I wanted to get some lunch so we exited the station and went to the Costa just outside the station. Tech had visited this one the day before and the service had been terrible but today they got both his coffee and my creamy cooler pretty quickly. From there it was a little downhill walk to Meal Deal where I got a £1.74 Chicken and bacon baguette with fries and an apple juice. We needed to be at Rowley Regis for a certain time so there were two options. Number 1 was to take the 14:01 from New Street to Galton Bridge and number 2 was to take the 14:03 from Snow Hell to Rowley Regis. Anyway, my lunch in hand, we walked across to New Street and got onto the platforms to see something rather unexpected sat in one of them. 150284! I wasn't expecting to see an Arriva 150! It was a dud and was out of service, presumably on a driver training run but still unexpected! Someone came up to us and asked what the 150 was doing and it turns out that this was forum member Alex 2901. We had a nice little chat with him before heading over to the platform for the 14:01 to Lime Street, this having dud 350243 on. Tech needed a couple of coaches in this one so at least he scored one! I let dad know what we were doing and he said that he was in position for the 14:03 from Snow Hell, the service that we'd connect onto at Galton Bridge. 37884 was sat at Soho, which was a nice score, mainly for Tech because it was a winner for sight for him! Vote tractor!

The dez arrived on time and after a treck over to the Stourbridge bound platform, we were in position for dad's train. It rolled in a few minutes late with 172332 providing power and we boarded in the very rear coach and walked through, keeping an eye out for dad. He was seen in the middle coach and we met up, getting ready for what Rowley Regis had in line for us. Dad had said while I was at his work in the morning that the last bunch of GBRF blue deaths were going to be heading to Donny from Newport that day and managed to find the schedule on RTT. I had let Tech know earlier on and he liked the idea of heading out to see them so, keeping an eye on them on RTT because they'd been running early. They then fell back into the planned path and 172332 dropped us off just in time for them. Tech had scored a coach in 332, leaving just one more to put it into super-dud status, a bit of info that I put into my head. There were quite a few spotters on the station and after a couple of minutes a monster convoy came into view, 66708 leading 66773, 774, 775, 776, 777, 778 and the covered up 779, all scores for sight except 708. I don't need to worry about those ones now then! This was very good news indeed!

We headed over the footbridge and onto the Brum bound platform in time for the cart that was following it, 172336. We all got seats on this one and after a nice chat, dad left at Snow Hell. Tech and I decided to continue through to Moor Street in order to view the 14:55 to Marylebone, a booked 2 coach. It's a 50% chance that 321 or 324 will appear on it so I ran over the footbridge and jumped in the air as it was my winner, 168324, leaving just one of the current '168s', 168325. This was currently out of service having had a collision with a tree so neither of us could get it. Tech was OK with going for it and, as he needed both coaches on it, we sat in the very, very front of the train for the short ride out to Solihull. To get back to Brum now, we had two options. The first was an ex Dorridge 172 with the second being an ex Marylebone 168. We decided that if the 172 had any winner coaches for Tech then we'd go for that but if it didn't then we'd choose the 168. It was by far my highest mileage LM 172 working the 15:17 but Tech needed two coaches on it so we leapt aboard 172340 for the ride towards Birmingham. Tech wanted to get a drink from Tesco or something so I suggested taking the 172 to Snow Hell and then walking to Moor Street, passing a Tesco en route. This would then put us in position to meet up with dad on 1H62, which would be my train back. This was a good idea so that's what we decided to do.

Just as 340 was arriving at Snow Hell, I noticed another one pulling in on platform 3. It was 172332 from earlier. I remembered that Tech needed one coach in this one so I told him and asked if he wanted to head back through the tunnel on it. This sounded like a good plan to him so we wandered over and got on 172332 for the very short ride through the tunnel, Tech turning it into a super dud en route. I'd arranged to meet up with dad outside the centaury lounge so we could get coffee and cake to eat on the train home. Dad snuck up beind me as he came, scaring the living daylight out of me but I recovered quickly enough to choose the cakes that we'd get. I was OK drink wise but was in dire need of cake (as always!). Two cakes were chosen and dad got both him and Tech a coffee before we headed over to the 15:55 to Marylebone, today worked by the best cat, 68014! We went to the 5th coach in the formation (there are 6th coaches but the front is the business zone one) because the rear one was wedged and Tech scored a couple of coaches, getting them both for haulage between Moor Street and Solihull, where he bailed to intercept 165028. It had been a cracking day with him and he's a really soche guy, that's for certain! GT continued to push dad and I towards Leam where we had to leave (If I were valid then I would have left the train at Leam... After going to Marylebone and back on it!) GT to thrash on without us. It had been one heck of a great day with 5 winners and 1 kind of winner (390156) along with some great company. It was great to finally meet Tech too, who managed to get 165028 easily in the end. Shame it went downhill after getting home though...

But that's a story for the next report...

Ooh err, I wonder what happened when you got home! Thanks for your excellent company that day, same for your dad too, first time I've ever been described as "soche"

Can't believe it's been two months since that trip already, where has time gone? It was certainly good fun, except the farce in the horrid cold weather in the morning of course!

Time will tell (and, knowing me, it'll be a lot of time!)!

2 months certainly is a long time... Where has time all gone? That time in the morning can't have been fun!

Yeah some good reads there young quinn, certainly sounded like the bait in Pdd#s first class lounge was decent and a fair bit cat thrash mileage too. I wouldn't have minded seeing that convoy of GB sheds myself. as for Lord Tram being a "soche", hes certainly a sociable lad alright or as we Geordies say, aye he's a canny lad.

At least you got plenty winners in, over them trips, looking forward to future reads.
