I’ve always just called them “two seaters”
not the proper term of bays/airline seats!
I do like the XC HSTs. If I remember correctly the XC HSTs have the same seats as the VTEC ones. I'm also glad that someone else dislikes standard on GWR - I hate those seats.Wow, that a sounds really good trip I've not been on a CrossCountry HST since 2015! I'm quite often on the Virgin ones though because I really like HSTs and my brother is up for any train if it is a Virgin one so the VTEC ones are great! They have the same seats don't they? I find them much nicer than other High Speed Train seats, especially standard on GWR.

Definitely worth going for 68009 insteadI'm just looking at ideas on getting 326 & 327 into my book for renumbering. Would have had 327 last Friday but it got delayed at Banbury waiting for a guard to join due to points issues at Birmingham earlier in the day (and 68009 arrived first)
As Roversfan says, that's simply what I call an airline seat (for no reason whatsoever).Where's the bay of 2 in standard on an XC HST?
As long as you know what you mean then that's the main thingI’ve always just called them “two seaters”not the proper term of bays/airline seats!
Loss of 20 miles chiefIt was only going to be on a leap to Leamington Spa to allow the train to empty out a bit more![]()
Cheers. Still loads more to come...Just read your last report and enjoyed it as always.
I’m quite liking some of your photos, the one of the HSTs at Bath and the one of the contrasting noses especially.
Good stuff fq.
The XC livery on HSTs is just brilliant. I don't know what it is about it but it works so well and is certainly my favourite of the HST liveries.Like Cowley, I'm playing catch-up.
Enjoyable reading, as usual.
I'm in agreement that 185s are far superior to Voyagers.
Also, that shot of 43384 reminded me how much I like that livery on HSTs.
Cheers!Me playing catch up too! And good that another regular correspondent is still out and about on the rails.
Some more successful adventures there and decent phots too.

It's great fun travelling with dad as most of my interests have been built from the ones that he has - I detest voyagers (as does dad) and much prefer locos to units etc. The fact that we both like HSTs is also excellent - I wouldn't have a trip to Inverness in 1st on the Chieftain on Wednesday if he didn't. Only 30 units? I had 60 winner units from my first day in Glasgow and that's excluding repeatsI'm so jealous that your dad is a rail enthusiast too, I wish mine was, then I'd be able to get far more units further away. I have a Pendolino first class return to Glasgow and about thirty SR units (no exaggeration, it is in the 30s) planned, my brother is pretty happy to come too (although likely won't do the SR units) but my dad who I'm dragging along is pretty miserable about the whole idea and is jealous of my mum and sister for staying at home!
But to be honest at £55 first class return each London to Glasgow it's a steal really.
Great report - XC HSTs have the best Standard seats going (Mallard) and yes are a welcome change after Grammer IC ones, but if you hate them so much why spend a whole day on them?!
I used to force myself to go back and forth between Reading and Didcot in horrible GWR standard class from 9am until 6pm all day just to get some HST winners up until the point where I actually felt desperate for each journey to end! First class rovers really need to be introduced and fast.
Oh and Reading is my absolute all time favourite station, it's a train journey away from me and I'm there all the time, yet I've never in my life seen a McDonalds there! There is a Burger King, Subway, Boots, Pasty Shop, WHSmith, M&S, another Boots, another Pasty Shop, another WHSmith, a third WHSmith and an Upper Crust but no McDonalds! Do you mean in the town centre? I can't believe you don't like that station by the way it's a work of art. Hideous before the refurbishment but now it's an amazing station!
I can't check right now but I'll post some directions laterWhere is the tesco near Plymouth station anyhow (for future reference for myself)?

Wow, that will be ace going on the Chieftain in 1st, I’ve done it (albeit 2nd to Darlington, 1st from there) and the staff are so generous even on weekends! You should get well fed there provided the catering timetable is stuck to!
The scenery is exceptional north of Perth as well.
Edited for you!
For a return to Glasgow in 1st class, £60 is excellent. Can't you let your dad stay in bed and start early?Ah yes. Well I’m at this very moment on a train to Reading and that saves me from looking for the McDonalds! (I do like their hash browns I must admit)
Whoa, sixty is a lot but I could only get the bargain deal if I returned the next day from Glasgow so I’m doing the rover on the day I go back, I can only cram in about 30 units between about 10am and 4pm, my train leaves 4:45 and I want time to use the lounge. Plus my dad wants to use the hotel facilities in the morning so I’m starting from 10am.
The day before I’ll be trying out the Glasgow Subway though, racing my brother to see who gets around the circle first! Me outer him inner.
A great run was had. Alas with it being December it was dark by Edinburgh but there was still evidence of lots of snow.Wow, that will be ace going on the Chieftain in 1st, I’ve done it (albeit 2nd to Darlington, 1st from there) and the staff are so generous even on weekends! I've never actually done the Kyle line but I can think of plenty overseas that will be much better than it ever could...Well, I don’t know. It certainly is lovely but I was more impressed on the Kyle Line, and even that isn’t as nice as some lines abroad (Interlaken springs to mind)
PS: Sorry @fishquinn I didn’t answer your question. I love the layout of loads of through platforms and the clever little bays at each end, plus the wonderful footbridge and the roof is really cool too!
Sorry I've taken so long to reply; I completely forgot.

I'm also thinking of a few lines in the USA and Canada. Absolutely amazing scenery.
Crap trains?! The States and Canada make our stuff look like a toy railway. Definitely my favourite trains in the world.
I'm going to need to do an Interrail in the next few years for sure.
I'm guessing that the suburban stuff would be pretty rubbish (if it isn't loco hauled) but seeing the freights while touring the USA is absolutely amazing. Amtrak also seems really good for the longer distance stuff (I really want to do the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle at some point).
One wish for me is to do something like this tour:

Maybe if I ever should win some money on the lottery, or save up the pennies from not heading out so much *dreams*
Similar to the Canadian Rockies train, I've gone across them on a bus tour a few years ago and they were amazing
For what it is that’s a great price!
That would be fantastic but I’d hate to go around as a tour that’s the only problem. Whenever i go to the Caribbean I see people walking around as part of a tour and I just think that it would be so much more enjoyable for them if they could explore whichever island it is as they like!
Pretty much my own thoughts. I'd probably prefer to just hire an RV and roam the country as I pleased with no timetable than be stuck to a timetable. That way I can include everything I'd like. For what it is that’s a great price!
