Bath tipper truck crash leaves four dead

Four people have been killed in a crash involving a tipper truck that hit cars and pedestrians as it travelled down a steep hill in Bath.

The truck struck "a number of vehicles" and two pedestrians as it travelled down Lansdown Lane in Upper Weston, just after 16:00 GMT, police said.

Four people died at the scene and several others have been injured.

Police said early witness accounts "suggest the driver was trying to avert an accident".

Ch Supt Caroline Peters, of Avon and Somerset Police, described the scene as "one of carnage".
