Yesterday (03-10-2024)afternoon there was a four hour line blockage near March, due to a broken down train.

On X it was said it was a failed freight train. But on online maps it was iirc 5Q46 Nuneaton to Ely papworth.

I'm guessing it was a diesel multiple unit or coaching stock off for storage.
Anyone know what it was and why it took so long to sort.

Looks to have caused some serious delays minutes.

175s brought to stand at red signal, when permission to move, brakes couldn’t be released, eventually train declared a failure.

The locos available to go to scene with emergency couplers were of the type of coupling that wouldn’t have enabled loco to move close enough to couple. At one point the suggestion of an 08 coming from Whitemoor was mooted.

Finally I believe the units moved under their own power.

Bet the passengers stuck on EMR services in the area were livid !!! 3 hours plus to detrain is totally unacceptable.

I guess from a passenger facing perspective the message they wanted to convey was that the failed train didn’t have passengers on, and someone took the decision that the simplest way to express that in a small number of words was to tell a white lie and say freight train

A particularly poor event - took ages to find a rescue loco then when it got there it wasn't needed! Huge delays to trapped trains and a large number of others cancelled. It's odd/frustrating that so much stock these days is hauled to storage with barrier wagons, etc., but one of the few that wasn't fails in this way.

The concept of 'empty train' is not alien to passengers, though.

It's been a terrible week for the Birmingham-Stansted route - on top of this there was a failed freight train at Manton Junction the day before, and a points failure at Stansted today!
