I have received my Disclosure certificate and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the address I have to forward it to...?

Yes, you will receive a copy of the disclosure at roughly the same as the employing organisation. This is your copy, and you should keep it, there's no need to send it anywhere.

Not at FGW you dont, it is YOU asking for (and paying for) the disclosure, this is sent to you and you have to forward it to the recruitment office at Swindon, the address is on the letters sent to you.

SWT ask for the disclosure (you sign a form giving them permission) and it is sent straight to them.
Other TOCs may be the same, may be different.

Thet refund you when you start working for them, saves them paying for disclosures for people that dont take up a job.

I should have made that clear, sorry.

Yep. Got mine today and it'll be sent to Swindon by recorded delivery on Monday.

That doesn't sound right. You can't ask for a criminal records check on yourself, it has to be done through a registered organisation because IDs have to be verified. I can understand the employer asking you to pay but it should be them applying.

Look up DBS (disclosure and barring service) on gov.uk

Disclosure Scotland allows you to get a basic crb check for unspent convictions only in a personal capacity.

There is nothing I know of to stop FGW asking for the fee, then refunding it back later on once the applicant has begun work.

I would remain critical of them if anyone had paid up, FGW had then decided not to take them and did not refund the CRB/DBS fee as a result.

When we have applicants attending to have their identity verified some of them do ask how they can pay, which I've always considered a bit strange. We do not charge as it is part of the costs of recruiting someone.

Ok, it's a Basic Disclosure certificate for South West Trains. I pay for the certificate myself, it gets sent to me and then I forward it to SWT. But what I want to know is WHERE I forward it to...

As far as I know yes but it might be worth giving them a ring just to be sure.

I think it will take a while for people (including me) to stop referring to it as a CRB check. The enhanced disclosures cover more than just criminal records, so the old name has been inaccurate for some time.

i'm not doubting you, just curious about who is arranging the CRB/DBS check.

According to https://www.gov.uk/crb-criminal-records-bureau-check/overview employers can request official checks only from successful applicants. Personal applications are not possible.

This sounds either very naughty or isn't a proper CRB.

Further down the page on that website:

If you need to run a check on yourself, you can get a ‘basic disclosure’ with details of any unspent convictions from Disclosure Scotland (anywhere in the UK).

I.e. it's all perfectly legal and above board.

One presumes that Scottish Law differs from English Law, hence the ability to 'self-check' to some degree.

So I send it back to recruitment then...?

I find it quite poor if they haven't told you where to forward the disclosure! I find it quite poor that successful applicants are told to apply and pay for for these checks in the first place!

Yes, it is still called CRB where I work, although when we get the new DBS forms it may help us to refer to the new name!

There are quite a few differences vetween Scottish Law and the law applied in England and Wales. I'm sure it is why those who self check will have to use Disclosure Scotland.

I still think that the whole system is pointless. too easily circumvented, and an added layer of cost and bureaucracy.

Still sounds dodgy to me. Employers in England and Wales aren't allowed to do CRB checks on prospective employees so they get them using a loophole. A decent employer will ask for a self-declaration on the application form then do a full pre-employment check later. That's all I've ever had to do (in financial services).

Can't see how it seems 'dodgy' at all.

Anyhoo, I'm one of the people who've had to do it and I'm perfectly happy to have done so.

Employers in England and Wales aren't allowed to do CRB checks on prospective employees so they get them using a loophole.

Well First Group & SWT (via Stagecoach) are Scottish companies. Not relevant though, since anyone in the UK can use DS. Seems good to me, freedom of (personal) information and all that.

Each certificate has a code number so it's easy enough for the company concerned to contact Disclosure Scotland and verify it. Besides, it cuts down on HR's workload thus reduces overheads to some extent.
