Forum not displaying £ symbol correctly

Is there an issue with the pound sign on the forum? Its displaying in some posts as "£"

Probably not as I'm on PC using Windows 8.1 and I have the same issue.

It is, I think, an issue between HTML and what the phone uses when you type it. Where it is showing the HTML code it is usually when someone is posting off their phone; when I post off my phone some of the symbols don't display properly for other people.

Yes, probably. 185143 is using the app to post a £ sign. Everyone else, including me, then sees it as gobbledy gook, whatever device we are using to view the forum.

I see the £ sign incorrectly in my postings and in the post I quoted earlier in the thread.
If I'm reading a post that isn't my own, it appears correctly in the app.

Mods, I'm right in thinking the app is no longer supported by RailUK aren't I?

You are indeed correct. It's a bit of a puzzler this one, as even with the same set up as people having the issue we have been unable to replicate it!

To confirm - it would appear to be an issue with those using the Android version of the RailUK app.... this is no longer supported unfortunately, and we'd advise those using it to switch to Tapatalk to avoid issues such as this. (that being said, if you love our App so much that you cant bear to let it go, by all means keep it, but please correct the symbols as soon as you get back to a computer )

As a suggestion to the forum admin team, I seem to recall a while back a system was added which censored swear words and if someone posted an abbreviation, would turn it into the full phrase. Could this not be used so that if anyone posts the string in question, it automagically converts it into a pound sign? It isn't a string of text which is likely to be posted in any other context.

I'd say it would be tricky, given the string of text is actually the HTML code for the £ symbol.

It is the html code for a pound sign when it's posted from the source device, but it isn't when it's rendered by the forum - the forum renders it literally, as an '&'+'#163;' - in html speak, "£".

Can you elaborate on why you think it would be tricky? It's only replacing one string with another.

It is caused by the person that posts it, not when it is viewed.

It's perfectly straightforward to just replace the string, the fact that it's a HTML entity doesn't make any difference.

Happens with the Apple app too (which I still have)

Could it be related to character encoding? Only the other week I was trying to help a colleague who was having issues whereby a £ exported from one program was importing as a question mark in another. Came to the conclusion it was character set related after reading online about it

Nope, and it also broke the quoted version too
