Thanks for the heads up on these - some good stuff from the archives (sadly I tend to find must of this much better quality than is now made).

I thought Victoria Wood was slightly too happy to make a bit of a dig at trainspotting (or perhaps specifically trainspotters) in a way that I'm not sure would happen now and seemed rather out of character for her, in what is overall a good programme.

Great to see the London to Brighton in 4 minutes side by side editions - 1953 and 1983 - that was on BBC4 too.

I'd also forgotten The Cure had used a (presumably slightly edited down version of the same 1983 film) for the video for Jumping Someone Else's Train' - seems to be on youtube in that version.

Jasper Carrot's routines of that era were much much worse. He practically made out trainspotters to be a (non-violent) public scourge to be shamed and ridiculed at every opportunity.

"That viaduct" being Glenfinnan. In a pre-Harry Potter world.

TBH I found Victoria’s presentation style rather dour and cynical. The only plus points in this show were the liveries,interiors,uniforms and trains.

When she was at York there was a woman in a horrid blue uniform with an awful hat with a yellow rim and piping, whose uniform was this. It was awful!

I noticed this and wondered what her role was. The sleeper stewards also wore red uniforms,I don’t remember them.

So was there a window of time in the run up to privatisation when 'shadow franchises' or whatever they were called started to create their own brand identity including the commissioning of uniforms etc that diverged from the previous BR or Intercity side sector uniforms?

Which then in turn got relatively soon dropped by the franchisee awarded the TOC operating contract - presumably.

ITVX are re-showing this cracking little documentary which I haven't seen since it first came out, where different presenters race to the centre of London using different modes of transport:

Interesting to see what talking points have changed and which have resurfaced.

Needless to say, I was rooting for the EPB for the win (it came in second).

Yesterday evening BBC4 broadcast “The Underground” from 2007 as part of the usually well respected Arena series. I caught up with it via iPlayer. It was very artsy, high brow and self indulgent. The narrator was absolutely dull and the episode very negative. A lot of clips were from various BTF films and often repeated throughout the program. The people featured,such as a behaviour expert or WW2 survivor brought little to the show because they were not properly interviewed. I really expected better.
