Fort WIlliam seated sleeper reservations

Does anyone know how reservations can be made between Edinburgh & Fort William?

The West Coast Main Line's most helpful ticket office can't do it.

Here, according to CS, and only for some dates, as not all have been released, and for those that have, it’s sometimes neccesary to request a CRE-FTW or v.v reservation as the system can get arsey with EDB-FTW reservations, and if the website doesn’t show any availability at all, which it does from time to time, it has to be done over the phone, but not until 15:30 on Sundays

I don't have a lot of experience but it's entirely possible they'd just tell you not to worry about it if you try and get one, when I went up to Fort William in the seated coach then lots of people got on who didn't have reservations and the guard didn't care in the slightest, it was just like any other daytime service. I had a reservation to FTW but there was no way for anyone to check whether or not I had one so I got the impression that it doesn't matter.

Of course a larger problem arises if they start telling passengers joining the seated coach that they need a reservation, and reservations are still as hard to get as they are now.

What would probably make some level of sense would be for the Scottish Government to order an additional two or maybe three Mk5 coaches with the TPE Standard Class interior, and to add these to the train between Edinburgh and FW. These would be the regular day train with no reservation needed and standing permitted.

Is standing not permitted in the seating portion of the sleeper for the last/first leg of the journey (i.e. the Scottish bit)? How many seats does the seated coach have?

Not many seats. No-one is going to be turned away though; there is no rule against standing as such. But no-one is going to want to stand for 5+ hours. Also there are 4 or 5 of us and we want seats together.

I've had issues getting these reservations in the past. The useless Serco say they're not needed despite the timetable saying the train is 'reservations compulsory'. I've even been told you've never been able to get reservations on this train if using it as a day passenger!!!

I did get a reservation at my local VTEC station. I've no idea how the clerk managed it but some sort of workaround was used.
