Fort William and Inverness Accomodation

I appologise if this in the wrong section in advance!

Can anyone recommend a nice B&B in Fort William and Inverness for a base, thinking about doing a trip up there in the next few weeks and looking for something cheap and cheerful and within walking distance of the stations.

Have taken a look at the usual Travelodge type places but they seem to be coming in around £60.00 a night.

They are popular locations so £60 a night for a basic room + breakfast doesn't sound too unreasonable to me in the circumstances.

Stayed in the Royal Highland Hotel at Inverness, nice place and got a cheap room for around £40. Perfect for the station as well.

I've stayed at St Anthony's B&B in Fort William. The accommodation was very good, and the hosts were very friendly and picked me up from the station (off the sleeper). You should be able to stay for around or below £50 per night, out of season.

You might have a problem getting in there at short notice though; I attempted to book our family holiday there for this year but had to abandon the idea after fining the place was booked solid until September; they actually suggested booking now to be sure of getting in for summer 2012 - although as I am talking about family rooms whereas you are talking about a single room, that might make a difference.

Aye it was a single room, booked around 3 months in advance, same time as getting the first advance tickets brought out. Room was a bit small but didn't bother me - being next to the station was a bonus.

Bit of a historical diversion here; did you know the Royal Highland Hotel was the inspiration for Thomas Andrews when he stayed there shortly before designing the Olympic, Titanic and Britannic?

The main features he used were the grand staircase ( which he doubled in width but kept the same style ) and the distinctive dining room windows, but there were lots of other small details he included in the ships as well.

Try the Ramada at Inverness. Or for something cheap the Holiday Inn Express is not bad at all, free breakfast and some great advance rates with loyalty points. Never tried proper B&Bs so worth a try.

I Have twice stayed in the Alexandra Hotel, opposite Fort William Station, it is very good, would def stay there again, and I have also stayed in the Royal Highland by Inverness Station too, again it was very convenient. I think there may a Thistle Hotel near by too.

I stay in chain hotels 2/3 times per week so was looking for something quirky and different and a little more personal, but I suppose I could blow some Holiday Inn points and stay in the Express in Inverness.

I have stayed in the Royal Highland in Inverness many years ago, good to see it is still good and has not changed.

There used to be a B&B in Inverness run by a crank down by the river, I think he was from Bristol or somewhere, but I can't remember the name, this was about 10 years ago!

Agree with that one - we stayed in the Alexandra for our 2009 summer holiday. But if you want a room with a decent view you'll again need to book very early; it's a popular hotel and fills up quickly.

Wetherspoons have an hotel in INV, I have stayed there and it is OK, about 5 mins walk from the station, you need to check out their web site for rates.

There are quite a few B&B's in the Crown area of Inverness. The drawback is that they can be quite pricey by B&B standards, and they are also not that handy for the railway station.
