Am I right in my recollection that BR Southern Region traction uniquely had a more abrasive sounding horn than the other Regions emitting, for want of a better description a strident "parp"? When did this change, assuming of course that it's not been perpetuated by SE, SC and SW?

I remember that the SR EMUs usually had slender 'trumpet shaped horns mounted on the cab roof whereas the GE units had.shorter wider mouthed horns mounted between the buffers pointing downwards by about 30 degrees. This meant that the roof mounting have them a longer forward range as opposed to a more local ambience.
The SR Horne also had a more trumpet 'nasal' sound which is possibly what you regard as abrasive. There were of course many more level crossings on SR lines in the south east than most of the other lines there.
