The Echo (local rag) seem to have sunk to a new low. Why the hell they are running such a feature now is anyone's guess.

So much a son his is. Predatory? God only knows what agenda he has. If he has no wish to tarnish his father's reputation then what is all this?

For the record, Atkinson is a well-regarded MP by the constituents. I am yet to meet one person who would describe him as anything other than a kind man genuinely willing to work for them. This cannot be said for his successor.

(As for the affair with Justin Fashanu, I had always suspected. :p)

Family of former Bournemouth East MP David Atkinson express shock over ‘secret life’

THE family of former Bournemouth East MP David Atkinson have claimed he led a secret life which included a string of affairs with men.

David Atkinson represented the town for almost three decades until 2005, and was widely regarded as dedicated and hard-working MP.

But more than two years after his death, his wife has spoken about discovering his string of affairs, while his son has claimed he was “predatory and prolific” in his sexual life.

Sue Pilsworth, who was married to the MP for 25 years and lives in Bournemouth, claimed Mr Atkinson had an affair with footballer Justin Fashanu and was HIV positive when he died from cancer aged 71.

The couple divorced in 1992 – something Sue attributes to her discovery that he was leading a secret double life pursuing relationships with men.

Anthony, 37, an illustrator, told the Echo that while they knew of his father’s sexuality, he and his mother had only begun to uncover details of his private life after his death.

He said his father had been “predatory and prolific”, adding: “It was clear from the paperwork we found and the lifestyle he led that yes, those words applied to him.”

Mrs Pilsworth told the Daily Mail at the weekend that she had no inkling of her husband’s homosexuality until 1990, when the footballer Justin Fashanu came out as gay.

She read a newspaper story about the footballer in a dentist’s waiting room and came across the reference to an unnamed, married Conservative MP whom Fashanu had met in a gay bar.

She said she rang her husband in Westminster, who returned home to talk to her and confirmed he was gay.

She said: “I felt utter grief, really. I sat and listened to this man in a suit who had just come from Westminster. I thought about his hypocrisy. I felt disbelief. My mind was in turmoil.”

She claimed Mr Atkinson persuaded her not to divorce him until after the 1992 general election.

Mr Atkinson stood down from Parliament in 2005 and entered into a civil partnership with a man in 2011. He died of bowel cancer in 2012.

At her Bournemouth home yesterday, Mrs Pilsworth said of her ex-husband: “He was probably one of the best constituency MPs Bournemouth East has ever had or will ever have. It’s not about attacking him and we’re very proud of what he did in the constituency.”

Anthony Atkinson spoke to the Daily Telegraph about his father’s sexual behaviour. He said the family had taken their findings about his personal life to the police and were interviewed but that the police did not pursue it.

But he added: “I want to be very clear my dad’s work as an MP was second to none. I would never want anyone to tarnish his reputation as an MP.”

Hmm a terrible story to print and one that really doesnt matter at all and one can only think that they are trying to possibly stir up things with regards to the current inquiry with regards to things that happenned with MPOs in WEstmnster during the 80s?

But this struck me as odd

She said she rang her husband in Westminster, who returned home to talk to her and confirmed he was gay.
So she called her husband to discuss Fashanu coming out and he just fessed up that night? Odd again.

One thinks that the Echo is trying to marr his name for some reason - or to plant the seed of doubt into peoples minds with regards to what I wrote above...

I no longer click on Daily Mail links as they get money from each click.

From this site?
Or from whichever advert is displayed?

Whenever someone posts a link to a Daily Mail article on any forum, or on Facebook. They may have the best intentions (that is, criticising the article) but the Daily Mail benefit from the clicks.

Each page view counts towards advertising income for the Daily Mail.

I don't click because it's the Daily Mail.

I support this summary, from http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Daily_Mail
The Daily Mail is to the U.K. what the New York Post is to the United States, and what the Drudge Report is to the Internet: to wit, gossipy tabloid "journalism" for those who cannot digest serious news, with a flippantly wingnut editorial stance. The Daily Mail is notable among British tabloids for rejecting the standard red-top banner order to try to appear more upmarket and respectable, although it does sometimes go in for the full front-page picture or headline characteristic of the working class rags. It is also notorious for its frequent harassment of individuals, campaigns of hate directed at various minorities, and willfully deceiving and lying to its readers.

Do you have a source for that info? I thought usually the way Internet advertising worked was that advertiser paid the site that displays the ad for each time that someone clicked through on an ad, not simply each time the page with the ad was displayed?

Ad revenue is partially calculated on impressions (people seeing the advert), as well as clicks.

Edit: see wiki

I dont have the source of this as Fact as a few of you want to be supplied but I was under the impression that the ads on the DM do not work like say google ads do on here. They sell some ad space as they would in their paper - so everyone sees it - this is why getting as many views per story pays them money as the advertisers can see they get high traffic volume so pay per click isnt really needed.

And its also why they have such long titles to entice people in - its called clickbait - and is the sole reason why sites like Buzzfeed exist - purely to sell advertising which is why they have so many god damn lists.

If there's any doubt whether the Daily Mail get money for clicks from the page or simply page views, why take the risk? In any case, it is best not to even mention the Daily Mail link to minimise the chance of someone going there.

Personally I'd be quite reluctant to link to a Daily Mail article (unless there was a good reason for doing so), since I don't really want to be involved in spreading their rather unpleasant world view to anyone.

If it's a case of me clicking on an existing link: I'm fairly sure that even if they get income from people going to articles, the income from one person clicking will be negligible. There is also a certainty that by clicking on a link, I'm putting extra load on their servers, which will cost them something - though that amount for one click will also be negligible. I think both of those will be far outweighed by the question, is there likely, so far as I can tell from the link, to be something in the article making it worth my while finding out what the DM's take on it is. That will probably not be the case very often.

I certainly wouldn't click through on any adverts on their website. (If an ad looked interesting, I'd probably google for it in a separate browser window).

You say it will be negligible? Lol they are the 3rd highest read website in the world man, something like between 100-200 million views a month or something stupid.

That's an advertisers wet dream.

There's still a matter of principle, plus it's good to get into a habit of avoiding crappy news outlets. I thoroughly despise the DM et al., and want to avoid making them even a few pennies richer by my actions. :)
