actually you will find that foreign railways are more better than this country put together
coming back from a punctual-efficent railway [Schweiz] to a railway thats almost brought to a standstill [England] makes me thing why did I leave Switzerland in the first place!

Cheers mate, exactly what I'm after.

Expanding my rail horizons continually now-love visiting new countries- I know the answers to my basic questions must seem painfully obvious to experienced railfans but need to start somewhere so all info welcome!

They run on a number of different lines, your best bet would be to join the Czech/Slovak Gen yahoo group which is at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/CDGEN/ - there are regular reports on there from people, and in there are also lots of diagrams in the files section available for download. There's a review of my trip from 2006 on my website, sorry I didn't get round to doing 2007! One word of warning though - some of the 749s are silenced and don't make a lot of noise.

I've not had any language problems, a lot of restaurants and bars/beer halls have menus in english as well as Czech, and all the hotels I've stayed at have spoken some english. Don't try understanding the station announcements though!

I think they are worse, those foreign railways.

Have you actually been over there and sampled any of them? The railways in the UK don't hold a candle to most (if not all) of the European systems.
