A little moan if I may,

Why is it necessary to have all of the following in the same restriction. Do the people who write these things even understand them?: :-x :roll:

  • A list of station each with a different restriction code
  • For travel via N the restriction from O also applies
  • Valid on trains scheduled to depart A at xx: xx
  • Valid on trains scheduled to depart B between xx: xx and xx: xx
  • Valid on trains scheduled to arrive For travel via P see restriction A1/A2

Winchester - Swindon SVR (YC) - for example

While we are at it perhaps someone can figure out why there is no cheaper via Salisbury fare for this one, given that the SVR is £28.70 and the SOR is £69.95, or at least some SDR/ CDR's?

Just for kicks I'll stick the restriction here as well minus the general conditions of course to try and keep at least some sensibility.

They make sense to the people who write/manage these codes, but I'm not convinced it has been properly considered if they're fully intelligible to the staff down on the ground who have to work with them, let alone the passengers. As witnessed with my recent incident at Liverpool which involved a number of ticket office staff not understanding the wording in restriction LK, sometimes they need to be worded in such a way that anyone who can read can understand them. It's not likely that anything will be done in a hurry about the codes in these circumstances.

That said, I have found that restriction codes are sometimes riddled with errors or omissions which can be used to obtain a pecuniary advantage when travelling at "peak" times. You can bet your bottom dollar that the TOCs will act promptly to change the wording or meaning of codes to prevent this, even if only one person in the entire UK has been identified as performing such activities.

Like the National Routeing Guide, restriction codes are just one of those things that only enthusiasts and a small minority of interested railway staff will actually read and get to grips with. With the code quoted above, a lot of people will just switch off after the first few paragraphs and abandon trying to make any sense of it.

As you can probably see, they have combined the various restrictions so you don't have to cross-reference other restrictions or figure out whether your journey is via X.
