I have a train mad dad. Want to book him a steam train footplate experience. Has anyone been on one? Any recommendations? North west/midlands preferably.

Take a look at the ELR, we’re only in Bury. Have to be quick though as they sell out sharpish.

I have heard good reports of the SVR footplate experience days. Easily accessible via Smethwick Galton Bridge and Kidder. If it starts at Bewdley or Bridgnorth you might have to have a b&b beforehand.
You have left it a bit late to book for this year - see https://svr.co.uk/experience/footplate-experiences/
GWSR do them too, but that's not quite so accessible. East lanc railway seem to have availability for 6 sept (only!)

I did it once (not saying where) and it was absolutely brilliant.

Good to see some still going ahead. I know many stopped as the costs increased substantially with coal increases.
