Footplate experience

Hi everyone. My first post after just joining and an apology and explanation as to why i am here.

I am not a rail/train enthusiast but i need some advice on behalf of my mates wife who is trying to arrange a footplate experience for him for a special day. She does not want to book him the full driving experience but, i think, just something were he could travel on the footplate.

Apparently she has tried to arrange this day out with the train on the Worth Valley line but effin safety made it a no no and the steam train run from Bury (East Lancs ?) only do the full day driving experience.

So the question is does anybody know were this kind of day could be arranged within a "reasonable" distance from Rochdale it would be much appreciated.

Depends what you mean by "reasonable" distance.

2hrs away just outside Birmingham is the Severn Valley (Cream of the Cream ) which do half days, full days and probably the longest etc..

East Lancs as you said just down the road only do the full day.

http://www.peakrail.co.uk/stexp.htm Peak Rail might be the best. They do 1hr to 2hr courses and it's only down the road.

Thanks very much Ascot. I should have been aware of the Churnet Valley railway myself being a keen narrowboater i have cruised the Caldon canal which in parts runs adjacent to the line and the Black Lion at Consall Forge was a memorable night. Having said that i think she may plump for the 1hr one on Peak rail for him.
