Two people have been killed by a freight train at Croft Lane level crossing in Cherry Willingham just before midday.
Full story can be found here: http://www.marketrasenmail.co.uk/ne...-two-killed-in-level-crossing-crash-1-6168332

Trains services to Market Rasen will begin to run again shortly this afternoon after the service was suspended earlier when two people died in a train crash near Lincoln.

The pair were hit by a freight train at the Croft Lane level crossing in Cherry Willingham just before noon.

Emergency services attended the scene, blocking off Croft Lane to motorists and pedestrians.

Trains between Lincoln and Market Rasen were suspended.

The National Rail Enquiries website said there would also be “disruption between Lincoln Central and Barnetby until 2.15pm.”

British Transport Police (BTP) attended the scene, with colleagues from Lincolnshire police also present...
Very sad news, it seems there have been an awful lot of deaths on the railway these past few weeks. Having lived locally for years and knowing the line it makes it very real.

My thoughts with the driver and all involved.

More from The Lincolnite website;

Two people die after being hit by train in Cherry Willingham

Two people died after they were struck by a freight train near the Croft Lane level crossing in Cherry Willingham just before midday on Wednesday, July 9.

The incident happened at around 11.57am at the footpath near the level crossing in the Lincoln village.

Emergency services attended the scene and Croft Lane was closed off to motorists and pedestrians.

The two people were pronounced dead at the scene. British Transport Police say the incident is “non-suspicious”.

Trains between Grimsby and Lincoln were suspended while emergency services worked to put up a screen and manage the situation.

Network Rail said the scene is now cleared and that services will resume as soon as possible.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “Our officers are currently in attendance at a level crossing in Croft Lane, Cherry Willingham where two people have been struck by a train.

“The incident was reported to BTP at 11.57am Wednesday, 9 July and colleagues from Lincolnshire Police are also on scene.

“Medics from the East Midlands Ambulance Service are in attendance and both people have been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are now working to establish the full circumstances of the incident, which is currently being treated as non-suspicious.”

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has been informed.

Sympathies to all involved - especially the driver of the train.

I love the way the mentioned the train came to a stand around 600 foot from a school. Like that has anything to do with anything. Except trying to make it sound more dramatic of course.

Thoughts to the driver

The article I linked to earlier has now been updated, to state that the people involved were a woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s. The Daily Mail mentions the Allenby Estates foot crossing but this is located on the outskirts of Lincoln, the incident actually appears to have occurred at a UWC over Green Lane in Cherry Willingham (the same road curves round, and crosses the line on an overbridge a few chains further up the line).

And I wouldn't call that a "footpath crossing".

The incident occurred at a footpath crossing just down from the AHB crossing where the train came to a stand - the emergency service response was concentrated here and thus it's where the press also came to.

Thanks for clarifying that.

A bad day for this sort of thing. There was another one this afternoon on a crossing near Diss, and yet another at Ealing. A chum of mine had to attend the latter, sounded rather grisly.

Yes - it's been appalling. There was also a trespass incident in the Brighton area.

Does anyone know if the reports that the incident at Diss was vandalism-related are correct?

No suggestion of that from what I have seen. There was a separate incident of a tree on the OLE nearby, which would have stopped trains were they not stopped already.

Very sad indeed, I hope the driver gets all the support he needs. I can't even begin to imagine how you deal with an incident like that (from a drivers perspective). Just tragic. RIP to the couple involved.

The couple killed at Cherry Willingham have been named as Peter Smith (80) and Betty Smith (79). In a statement released through BTP, the family of the couple said: “We are deeply saddened by our loss and we would now like to ask for privacy while we come to terms with what has happened.”

From the Lincolnite website.

Condolences to the family, and wishing the driver well.
