Extra trains are being ran for the Championship playoff final at Wembley:

TRAIN operator National Express East Coast is to operate an extra non-stop train to London to take Hull City football fans to the Championship play-off final on Saturday, 24 May.

The extra train will leave Hull at 8.47am on Saturday, 24 May, and will run non-stop to London King's Cross, arriving at 11.44am. [Hellfire run ;)]

The return service departs London King's Cross at 7.10pm, [calling Brough at 21.36] and will arrive back in Hull at 10.02pm.

National Express East Coast spokesman John Gelson said: "We're delighted that the Tigers are through to Wembley, in such emphatic style, and we want to make travel simpler for the fans who will want to see the team hopefully making a successful bid to reach football's top flight."

Meanwhile, Thomas Cook is running a charter too, although I cannot find any timings.

http://secure.thomascooksport.com/hull.php - No timings, but it's sold out

Also, Hull trains are completely booked as well that, so they are directing passengers to NXEC and TPE.

Personally, I feel Hull Trains could be making more of an effort. With two 180s now in their hands, why couldn't they get them both running on that date and put an 8 car 222 on the 1941.

To be honest, if they could, they would.

How do you know that, do you work for Hull Trains? TOCs often don't do things even though they can.

yeah like EMT, they have perfectly good train washers, but actually using them?! ooh!!! that's rare!!!

Hang on, it's a way off yet, how do you know they won't?

Well, there are signs plastered throughout Hull Interchange (as well as something on their website) saying that they can't take any more passengers on those trains.

How do you know they can? Same questions to you.

Well at least I applied some thinking ie. they now have 5 units, they only need 3 to work the timetable so they could probably spare one to run an 8 car train. You just said 'they can't' when frankly you have no idea.

Perhaps they don't think the 180s are relaible enough to guarantee 2 sets being available!

Maybe this is the case.

I'm not saying that it is possible - I just don't like class313's attitude.

Well to be honest Max, saying Hull Trains could make more of an effort when you don't really know either is a bit odd. How do you know they haven't made an effort?

Chances are if they did run a Footex or two, they would be fully booked so I would of thought "they could if they would" would apply here.

I didn't mean to offend.

I just feel like you were discrediting what I said with no real knowledge on the subject. I only said that Hull Trains don't seem to be making much of an effort. All they seemed to do was shove up signs saying their trains were fully booked, at least NXEC have made an effort with an additional service. Of course I don't know if it's actually the case. But you don't know if they could have done.

I bet management at NXEC, Hull Trains, EMT, and to a lesser extent Northern and TPE are worried (slight understatement).

Doncaster Rovers vs Leeds United in the League 1 play off final at Wembley.

The MML and ECML are going to be chaos that day ....

The situation with Hull Trains comes down to stock. Since 222103 had the accident, HT have struggled, as they need 4 units to run their diagrams. Yes they have managed with 3 units, but the remaining Pionners are in urgent need of maintanence.

That is why they have 2 class 180s. They can run their normal diagram, and have a pioneer at Crofton for it's much needed maintanence/servicing.

Given one extra HST service, one charter and Hull Trains running as planned, plus all connecting services running, how many people is it actually possible to move between Hull and London Kings Cross before 2pm (I'd reckon you'd need a good hour+ to get to Wembley and get in)

NX have before IIRC done separate trains for each sets of fans i.e. Leeds services which do not stop at Donny and some additional Donny terminators.

What does the engineering work look like that day? The Summer Saturday HSTs at least should be available as additional capacity.

Could HT spot hire some 180's from Oxley and run double sets?

Looks like it's going to be a busy day on the Hull line - another 10 car charter train has been announced in addition to those above!

Hull City AFC said:
The Club have teamed up with Thomas Cook to secure an additional official supporters train to London for the Tigers' Play-Off Final at Wembley on Saturday 24th May.
An extra ten carriages have been secured which can accommodate 500 supporters and will depart Hull Paragon on the morning of the game and return from London Kings Cross in the evening. Departure times will be confirmed to customers next week.

The fare will be £60 (no concessions) including a one-day travel pass and bookings can only be made online at http://secure.thomascooksport.com/hull.php

Eager City fans have already been busy making travel arrangements for the big day with seats on the first supporters train selling out within hours of going on sale.

I was just thinking that it's going to be interesting as to what they do at Hull - I'm certain that there are no platforms which can accomodate 10 cars. The last coach on a GNER HST is only just on the platform.

What do you think the traction will be? I automatically presumed 67s, but they seem to be in such short supply at the moment - is there a possibility of something else making an appearance?

Who do Thomas Cook use as their charter people? Thomas Cook has EWS 67's on the GLC-Manchester train on Wednesday, so those 2 would still be available. I guess EWS will just have to displace the 67 from freight work and replace with cl66/cl60.

btw does Hull Paragon = Hull Interchange = Hull's main station?

Yeah, all the same thing. Technically it's called Hull Paragon Interchange, but most traincrews just call it Hull

Well to be honest, 67s aren't used too much on freight so I don't think that is much of a problem.

It's not as easy as that. The 67 fleet is quite stretched at the minute.

  • 3 for FSR on the sleepers
  • 5 for NXEC as thunderbirds
  • 6 for WSMR ufn.
  • 4 in long term store
  • Those needed by EWS for various trains and/or maintanence
  • Other charter trains already committed to

As you can see, there is very few spare, possibly none at all.

My money is on Riveria 47s and stock.

I meant on the freight side of things, as I said, they don't do much and can easily be replaced.

Ok, I've just looked on railtourinfo, and on the 24th, there is 5 67s needed for railtour work, so that's 23 in use already that day (25 if you include the 2 locos for royal train duties).

That doesn't leave very many spare, plus some will be booked to recieve maintanence, and any other work EWS have.

Take away three as the Pathfinder and Past Time Railtours are cancelled

Not Footex, but just noticed there is also a railtour from Hull to Carlisle on 24th too, departing at 0700! Must be the largest number of non-unit operated trains running out of Hull on one day for years - 1 charter, 2 football charters, 2 HSTs (all return trips).

Maybe we need to run a Photex in before hand to deal with the hundreds of spotters :)
