Footbridge at Marylebone

Hello all,

I’m not nearly as clued up on rail related matters as many of you so I hope this isn’t a silly question...

... can anyone tell me why Marylebone has a pedestrian footbridge at the far end of the platforms? I have never seen it open for use, and given the way Marylebone is served I wouldn't imagine much demand for quick interchange anyway.

From the road it's signed as emergency exit only.

Having been involved with the upgrade of Marylebone as part of Evergreen 2 as a senior engineer, the staircases up from the platforms onto Rossmore Road are for emergency egress from the station should, for whatever reason, egress were not to be possible through the concourse area.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense now. I have seen some photos taken from the bridge so someone must have had permission to go up there at some point (lucky person)

The footbridge runs directly alongside the road bridge, so with a camera on a stick you'd get the same photos from the road bridge.

Emergency exit routes or footbridges or subways at platform ends are a feature of revised standards, and will be seen more and more whenever new build or major rebuilds occur, examples being Farringdon, London Bridge and Reading.

For reference, there is no footbridge at Marylebone. The emergency stairs exit directly onto Rossmore Road.

It's just a normal road. You can walk there in a couple of minutes from the main entrance at the station. If you turn left and immediately left again you will be walking along Boston Place which follows the station's exterior wall running parallel to platform 1 (this is where George fell over in the opening scene of the Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night) and by the time you've walked the length of the platform you'll be presented with a small staircase which takes you up to the overbridge and Rossmore Road. The wall is too high to see over but the staircase overlooks offers decent views of the station.

I managed to photograph above the wall by holding phone above my head the other week. For reference, I'm 6'1"

A few years back during engineering works we were taken up those steps on to replacement coaches (that I think went all the way to Banbury) that were waiting on Rossmore Road.

I suppose if glancing at it from the station point of view it probably does look like one structure, given the paint scheme they used.

A few years ago, a train was on fire on platform 1 at marylebone. Platforms 4,5 and 6 were still operating and the only way to enter or exit the station was via one of these exits

There's some interesting railway architecture in that vicinity. The base of the nearby GC goods depot can still be seen and over on Lisson Grove the bridge over the service road can be seen where the GC serviced and reformed stock on a traverser. All long disused and built over.
