Well, the two non-English managers that have been in charge haven't done anything to suggest otherwise.

I totally agree with you on that point, but this is only a side issue to the fact that since England under Ramsey won the World Cup in 1966, how many English managers have England had, who achieved absolutely nothing in terms of major trophies won.

Other countries have won World Cups and European Championships since 1966, so what has gone wrong with the English system since then ?

No manager since 1966 has done anything, be it foreign or English.

When will the english learn that you dont have a right to win every trophy you enter, no manager will ever win anything with England as the english players have the wrong attitude when it comes to playing for there national team.
They dont work as a team, and are in the press every other week for non football related issue's.
Harry Redknapp win not win anything with England, and until ze englisch change there attitude i'll die before you do.

100% right. The players will be ignoring the manager, citing how great they are in their normal team, while going out on the p**s before their next game and getting up to no good in the papers. Sure they want to be able to say they play(ed) for England, but they seem happy to lose and then apologise afterwards, no doubt shifting the blame on someone else (the manager).

I think part of the problem is that the English players may be good, but they also rely heavily on their foreign team mates, so playing for England shows that they're not as talented as they'd like to think they are.

Ultimately, they can't play as a team and clearly lack respect for the other players, the manager or the fans.

Until that changes, you could change the manager every six months and it wouldn't get any better.

My Dad's just called me to tell me I have a ticket to the Holland game on the 29th

On a more important note, you can read the full transcript of today's Press Conference on The FA's website, and can also watch a video of said Conference.

Against who? Holland is a region, not a country ;)

Very funny  It is true though...

It is rather awkward for me though, because I have a school placement until 1530 and have to give a presenation at 1240 the next day! More Last Train shenanigans I think. Not to mention being unable to use my bus pass given it would be 0140 on a Thursday morning <(

If the match finishes at ~2155 I will have ~90 minutes to get from Wembley to Paddington. The Bakerloo had better not let me down.

Wonder if we'll pay Fabio's replacement 24 million smackeroons for an abject failure in a major tournament and fook all else. Talk about reward for failure:( I really am beginning to long for the day football dies on its arse in this country. It's getting ridiculous:(

This is something I've been trying to highlight for ages, He is paid far more than most Bankers .....for failure.

Look at RAFA B picked up millions from Liverpool spent six months at Inter and picked up more millions when sacked....yet remains a folk hero not a "Fat Cat"

I am pretty sure most football managers or players are paid what their contract states. This contract is signed before they have managed / played a single game. How is anyone to know if they will be a success or a failure.

Managers are paid the going rate for the job. They wouldn't be able to attract much of a manager if they were offering 50k a year would they.

I'd do it for 50p a year :p

Well, dependent on who I would be managing anyway. West Ham would have to pay me enough to bankrupt themselves overnight to employ me! (Not for my financial gain, but for their financial ruin <D The money would then be donated to developing the Grassroots game.)

Sorry EM2

Quite agree and you could use the same argument with regard to bankers who are unable to take contractual bonuses as somehow their failure is deemed different to that of a football manager:p

As far as I am aware no football manager has ever caused the meltdown of the global financial system causing untold hardship on families. That might have something to do with the way the two careers are viewed by the public

That was a minority of Bankers why all tar all of them with the same brush?

Just because a few footballers are accused of rascist incidents that does not make them all guilty?

Also few if any of the Bankers acted outside of the law or regulatory measures in place.

Bottom line Benitez got millions for failure and is lauded ...Hester achieves what he is asked to do and does not get his bonus -strange world

And only a minority of footballers / managers are on the big bucks. But hey lets not tar everyone with the same brush eh
And I don't think you will find many people lauding Benitez to be honest.
Bankers may not of acted outside the law but they were reckless.

I bet you any money you like there are more premiership footballers earning £1Million plus than Bankers by a long stretch.

Even Diamond at Barclays is "only" on about 5 Million and he's about the head honcho.

Less than Capello was on and he's in charge of a Multi Billion Bank not a middling International team.

At you beloved Villa I doubt many of the first team are on less than a MILLION per year....yes just think about that while Villa screw you left right and centre from ticket prices to refreshments to programs and spend got knows how many million on your pal Mcleish.

If they capped the wages in football (like they are suggesting for bankers) your ticket price could halve overnight.:p

You do realise the premier league is about 1% of the football in this country don't you.
How many bankers have their names chanted by thousands of people. How many bankers have people pay money to watch them at work. How many bankers can have people off their seats with a moment of brilliance. How many bankers have people having their names put on the back of shirts.
Your obsession with bankers and footballers really doesn't stand much scrutiny really.

So you are happy with the way the Premier League is run and feel it offers good value for money ?

Back to the English/ foreign management discussion. Statistically sven and fabio are both in the top 3 most sucessful England managers of the last 30 years. Fabio had a win percentage of 66%, sven won 59.7% of his games. The top 3 is completed by....Glenn hoddle with 60%. The next best win percentage is 55%. Are we sure we want an English manager?

It seems to be a good deal for a Football Manager to be continually sacked, so they can fleece the Clubs!

you wait and see what happens if good old happy harry gets the England job. He'll realise he will get found out quickly and start things off in the media about the FA being meddling so and so's to get the fans on his side, then when it all goes tits up for him he will blame it on them and walk away with a nice(tax-paid) pay off and into some other juicy role that will pay him big bucks.

There has to be someone other then that horrible excuse for a human.

How will Spurs supporters react if Harry just buggers off to the England job?

This season is their most successful in the league for decades, and half way through the manager just walks out and leaves them in the lurch?

It shows just how selfish and biased the media are that they are all baying for the third place team in the Premiership to lose the one man who, while he may not actually win them the title, will have a big say in where it finally ends up.

As the FA man said, you want the best manager - and there are very few good English managers around. But, for heavens sake, you do not want a "Coach". The managers job is simple - decide on the best system for the match, and pick the players best suited to that system - not necessarily the best players. Once you start having to coach them you are almost doomed to failure - it's like saying Panesar is a good bowler, so we'll make him bowl fast and straight. The chief problem is the press, second guessing the system, and camouring for their favourites to be included.

Did he 'get millions for failure'? We don't know what the terms of his contracts were.
IF there were specific clauses about what he was expected to win/where his team were expected to finish, then you have a point. But I doubt that there were those clauses.

I'd imagine a sacked manager has to have his contract paid off unless there was a very specific clause defining what success would entail - the word success is too vague to be used on its own.

This posturing is clearly an act by the media to get their man in and no sooner than they have to attack him with all guns blazing. The England job is a poisoned chalice - how many recent England managers have returned to club management. McClaren was doomed from the moment he joined Forest because of media hounding from one game as England boss...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Until the media is forced to follow Neutral Point of View we'll get unjustified hounding and attacks by an industry with no sense of responsibility and one that is happy to sabotage the world cup bid in pursuit of it's own gain

Well, I'd have Martin O'Neill given the choice. Sure, I'm biased being a Villa fan, but the guy is class. He's passionate about the game, and that seems to be what England (imo) have lacked at international level since the Venables years.

Agreed Redknapp has won what precisely....The FA Cup with Portsmouth..

Gus Hiddink is another prime candidate with experience of getting good performances from often mediocre teams in World Cups etc.

If English Club sides mostly have foreign managers what difference does the National Sides incumbents nationality make. One important factor their English must be better than Capello's.:p

My concern is about Arsenal, Not the Spuds, so given the choice Harry is an ideal candidate for the England job. He wont be alone though Rosie 47 will be looking after him in more ways then you can imagine.
