Indeed, your team is performing creditably well. Hyde FC have 41 points against the 31 points of Gainsborough Trinity, but we have played more league games. We won 3-1 against your side at home earlier in the season and the match at your ground is on 7th January. The coming winter with its pitch problems may well affect future league positions, but the very real danger at present to both our two teams is Stalybridge Celtic FC., who have experience at full Conference level.

The draw for the 3rd qualifying round of the F A Trophy on 28th November includes:-
Gainsborough Trinity v. Hinckley United
Hednesford Town or Matlock Town v. Hyde FC

A surprising item of news from the top division of our league has seen the former German international player Dietmar Hamann resign as manager of Stockport County (who having plunged from the Championship...League 1...League 2... Conference very quickly), who lie in 17th place in that league.

We're up at Gainsborough next Tuesday. It'll probably be the first game that I miss this season.

We got drawn at home to Truro in the FA Trophy, we've already beaten them 7-2 in the FA Cup.

i've just seen that capello will probably play terry against spain, despite him hoping to look at some other players in the upcoming friendlies.
apparently capello's plans were disrupted when it turned out phil jagielka probably won't be fit. it would seem there are no other interesting new centre-backs for him to look at.
all i can say is,....

how about calling up steven taylor?!

Dream on. No England manager looks at who's playing well but who they play for

Football at the very top level already is extremely tedious. I follow the Villa all across the country and we missed our chance to become big. Times like this I'd just prefer us to get relegated for some competition (as much as I hate saying it...!)

Nice to see a Villain on here!

Get the idea guys:

The fact that Villa aren't as powerful or successful as the likes of Manchester United or Liverpool means sod all.

ASTON VILLA ARE STILL ONE OF ENGLAND'S BIGGEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL CLUBS! :p

They've won the European Cup for Heaven's sake - that's more than all of London put together!

International breaks? Boring....
With regards to the Johnstones Paint Trophy, I think any chance of a lower League side getting to play at Wembley is great, but attendances will be lower until the 'real' possibility (latter stages) is reached. These days there's virtually no chance of a League 1 or 2 side making it to even a Semi Final of the FA or Carling Cup sadly, money does talk alas.
Nice to see the SFA keeping cheap prices for the Scottish League Cup semi Finals in January too

This. Winds me up though that fans of other teams seem to think that because we haven't won anything in a few years, we are no longer a big club. I personally think Nottingham Forest are still a big club, of course they are.

Here is a question for fans of any club....
If your club were subject to a takeover similar to that of Manchester City, how would you feel...?

I'm not sure about it personally. I would love the success, but the Glory Hunters and Plastic fans that come with it I wouldn't like. I think I'd look back at the days of Stiliyan Petrov and Chris Herd and wish I could have them back!

I already look back at the days of Paul McGrath, we'll never have another defender like him.

I'd rather not have it. I cannot see it being sustainable and I'd rather see us playing football rather than buying everyone up even if that means having to drop down a division. Like you the plastic fans and glory hunters would annoy me no end and I could see there being a lot of pressure to move ground since there is limited room for growth due to the housing and football grounds belong near local residents, not in huge out of town complexes

We had Leroy Rosenior at a club Legends Night last night, he spoke very honestly and openly about the issue of racism in the game. On the Terry subject he said that he didn't care if he did it but if he did, he wanted to know why he did it.

I look back on the days of Paul McGrath also, as at 19, that was the first team I saw. What a player, what a team. Really could have gone on to glory with a little more backing. Strange to think of Brian Little being as good a manager as he was considering what he's done since. Any Villa fans might be interested in this video... http://youtu.be/YXhd_3oyLlU

What strikes me in that video is just how many Englishmen we've lost from the game

That must mean that as i follow a London team that i dont support a big club. Well im happy with that, at least i would be able to afford a season ticket. Instead of being priced out of the equation. I would rather us back at our old ground and playing in front of 38,000 instead of our state of the art ground holding 60,000. Things were much easier in those days. At least one thing Villa fans can say that no other teams fans can say is that apart from Arsenal, Villa have been crowned champions at Highbury. I was there, i think in the grey matter that is my brain 1981. So i give you that Villa.

Season ticket prices in football are a joke. My season ticket for Leeds United is £582, that’s after 19 years service and the cheapest in the ground! For sections of the West Stand a new applicant price can top £800. My season ticket for the Leeds Rhinos rugby league team is £210, that includes a DVD of the previous seasons action and various other decent gifts.

Leeds are a decent sized club but we have been playing outside the Premier League for 8 seasons now and the prices since relegation have increased vastly rather then reduced. I have never ever believed we have a divine right to be in the Premier League but I honestly do believe that the PL is not a better place for our departure. I would say that Man Utd/Leeds, Chelsea/Leeds, Liverpool/Leeds are bigger games than Man Utd/Wigan for example but that is only my opinion. I have no qualms with any team that is in the PL because those that are in there are there because they deserve to be, Leeds United do not deserve to be at the moment. That said, I hope we do return one day. I first got a season ticket when I was 7, right back in 1992! The season after we shocked all by winning the league. I can remember the turgid seasons in the mid nineties, the signings of Carlton Palmer, Ian Rush and Lee Sharp, just awful. I remember centre back David Wetherall almost being our top scorer for the season……….with four goals. I remember Tony Yeboah, I remember how brilliant Bruno Ribeiro was……………..until he got injured. I remember seeing a fresh faced Harry Kewell, an ugly faced Lee Bowyer and the complete and utter brilliance of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who remains one of the best players I’ve ever seen at Elland Road. Then the European dream came along, a win over AC Milan and then holding them at the San Siro, beating Lazio in Rome, thrashing Besiktas and Anderlecht who had previously beaten Man Utd. Then it all collapsed, quality players left for peanuts, managers were sacked, Jacob Burns started playing for the first team and with that came the inevitable relagation. Worse was to come, after flopping in the play off final of 2006 against Watford a relagation to the third tier beckoned. We had a thuggish cockney as a manager and only 6 registered players over the summer then bang! You are starting on -15 point lads! But Wise galvanized the team, he got David Prutton off the booze, he got Tres Kandol scoring goals and he un-earthed the gem of Jermaine Beckford. It’s true that we didn’t go up that season but I truly believe our reaction of the -15 point penalty saved Leeds United. It would have been so easy for a club that had been dragged into the abyss to crumble once more and face yet another relagation but somehow Wise (for a short while) turned the club round. I remember being stood on terraces at Hereford, Yeovil, Exeter cheering the lads on in League One, the noise the Leeds fans made during those darkest years was incredible. The Leeds United away support is something that you have to see (and hear) to believe. Back in the championship now and although there has already been ups and downs this season I’m confident that slowly we will come back. The passion in me will never die that’s for sure!

You can tell from my postings that I follow Oldham Athletic and have seen them as founder members of the Premiership and also bottom of the old Division 4 (with only 4 points from their first 15 games before Jack Rowley became manager). Currently the most inconsistent team in League 1.

Anyone else who has not already "nailed their colours to the mast" like to do so.

Leroy Rosenior said that 20,000 Leeds fans made Nazi salutes at him when he played there.

Leeds fans are responsible for all the bad in the world, i'm pretty sure we've been blamed for the current European financial crises so I take all negative comments with a pinch of salt.

I have certainly never heard any racist chanting whilst supporting Leeds and I haven't seen any Nazi salutes either. That's not to say it never happened, why would Rosenior make it up (although 20,000 sounds like a blatent, typically anti-Leeds lie) but it's always more of an issue when it's Leeds United.

When we go to Millwall and Cardiff, they turn up with Turkish Flags, Galatasaray shirts and make frequent stabbing gestures. Very little is said about that, when a small minority of Leeds fans sing about Munich (which is just horrific and bang out of order) it's headline news. Every club has an element of idiots but it's always Leeds that are condemned the most.

Alot of it comes from our extremley vocal away support. Alot of clubs and fans don't like it that our travelling army out-chant a home support that might be up to 10 times bigger in numbers. They also don't like it that we take the micky of clubs that play damn music after a goal. I really really hate that personally, just awful, atmosphere should be created by fans not bouncy music.

Clubs like Hull, Huddersfield and Bradford seem to have a serious complex and obsession with Leeds which is strange because they mean little to us given the amount of years we've spent in different leagues to them (occasionally with Leeds lower than them) The only credible Yorkshire rivarly for the majority of Leeds fans is Sheffield Wednesday. Those types of clubs will do anything to drag up rubbish for Leeds United.

I'll give you an example and this is totally true, you can look it up. Leeds United run an internet TV station called LUTV. LUTV film all Leeds games, at home games they use a service similar to most major broadcasters with the multi-angle replays etc but at away games LUTV take only one camera and film the whole game from the classic side position. There is a gentlemens agreement between clubs that LUTV are charged £1,000 to bring their equipment into away games, this was even the case at Manchester United were they were permitted access to the TV gantry at Old Trafford without a problem. The £1,000 entry fee is fairly typical of what a club will charge for another club to record in the ground.

However, upon turning up to Huddersfield Town, LUTV were denied access. Not known to the broadcaster, Town had rejected the £1,000 payment by Leeds and were demanding £50,000. This was on the morning of the match, eventually an agreement was made and a payment of £5,000 was given to Town. LUTV were aloud to broadcast, this came on the back of Town making illegal DVD's of LUTV's coverage of a game in the previous season. LUTV dealt with this matter privatley and saved Town a massive amount of legal problems. What Town did was petty, pathetic, small minded and typical of the type of club that is blinded by Leeds hatred.

It's something i've had to deal with for ages. I am fully understanding that Leeds United are most evil creation in the history of the world.

I am ashamed to support them. There is lots of people with anti-Leeds agenda's.Congrats!

I've been to Boundary Park a few times. For some reason it's always freezing cold, massive away stand though.

I remember a game a few years ago when we played Oldham. 90 minutes of awful football was followed by an Ian Westlake volley into the top corner. I went completley mental.

Oldham had quite a decent record at Elland Road in League One, I don't think they ever lost? And strangley I think it's same case for Leeds at Boundary Park, very odd....

I guess I'll go next. I've been an Evertonian since I had no idea of how football worked. When I was little I liked teams for various colours (the same reason my mother likes Celtic, to the invariable disappointment of Matt), and took a special liking to Everton among all the blue teams. The first season I paid any notice to football was 1997/98, when we went within literally a few goals - and a few minutes - of suffering the unthinkable but sadly overdue first relegation out of the top flight since the 1950s, and only our third to date.

Things went wrong the next year however because, being a bit on the naïve side, my brother coaxed me into having a soft spot for a certain bunch of overpaid actors in Manchester. And by the end of the season, with the Treble as a finale, I was admittedly impressed. But I was never really interested, with various seasons of nothing but the same Fergie drivel passing without importance.

Finally, the run was bucked roughly when David Moyes took charge at Goodison Park, and my waning interest in domestic football finally reached a worthwhile level. Before long, we reached 4th in the League (with a -1 goal difference ) and faced Villarreal for the right to play in the Champions' League. The referee on the day (I think it was one Mr Collina; ever heard of him?) let us down a bit though, and the Spanish team went on to reach the Semi-Finals at our expense.

Since then, it's been a bit hit-and-miss, with no real problems but no real success either, but also with one major Final in that time - and the fastest goal in FA Cup Final history as a result (my brother walked into my room after about 50 seconds of the game and was amazed to see the 1-0 scoreline), even if we did eventually lose 2-1. With the ongoing stadium problems and the fact that Bill Kenwright has pretty much taken the club as far as possible though, I can't see the glory days of the 80s returning any time soon.

Meanwhile, another club that was at the wrong end of the table in 1997/98 was Southend United - only, unlike the Toffees, they actually fell through the trap door. AGAIN. Gone were the days of the early 90s, sitting top of Division 2 after thrashing Newcastle 4-0, and being only four to five months from the promised land of the inaugural Premier League - now, Southend were to play in what we now called League Two. If only Big Neville Southall had been the force he was up at Goodison in the mid 80s...

Six years of nothing passed before the club finally won promotion through the Play-Offs in 2005 after what initially looked like a season of struggle to even stay in the League period. Then, after being among the favourites to finish bottom (never mind the drop), Southend stormed to the League One title after one of the strongest winters you will ever see in football, and thus came the division the town likes to call home - the Championship. This was soured by Colchester by joining as well, but having done the double over them in 2005/06 Southend were confident - and were even expected to survive comfortably.

Instead, things went badly wrong. The highlights of being 2nd after the first day, destroying QPR (with ex-Shrimper Simon Royce in goal) 5-0, and of course a certain evening in November (which was Fergie's first game after his 20th anniversary) aside though, it was a season of struggle. Contrary to the previous season, when the pre-season belief was that Southend would struggle, the team and the town both felt that the team was too good to be relegated (anyone explain the logic in that?) - and, of course, it happened. And soon, the team would be relegated again - back to League Two.

Now though, Southend have won 28 points from a possible 30 (my brother chose the one game they failed to win to watch in person... sucker!) and, apparently as suggested by both readers of the Guardian and also experts at the Metro, Southend look like genine title contenders - but can they stop moneybags Crawley? Having said that though, unless the whole stadium soap opera is sorted, I can't see Championship football returning to my hometown any time soon. Fossetts Farm shuld have opened several years ago... instead, it's not even a construction site yet.

The other teams I follow to some degree or another are Bath City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Cardiff City, Chelmsford City, Ipswich Town, and AFC Wimbledon. Ipswich in particular hold a special place in my heart after the events that occurred in the days following the loss of Sir Bobby Robson - but that's another story.

Por favor...!

As you can see I'm a Villa fan and I think while these long postings are being made I may as well chip my bit in. I'm led to beleive my first away game was when I was just two years old and I've missed only a couple of handfuls since (last one I missed being Blackburn away in 1996). Now I'm at working age and paying my own way it all seems so different to how it did when I was younger. I am happy to struggle my way through life as long as I can still go the games, as to be honest, it's the best form of entertainment I can get for my money. I've now started going with some lads I know who I really introduced to the Away Day scene by taking them to Everton and Arsenal last season. The travel, the drinking, the pubs, the atmosphere..... Fantastic days out. Funny really how I miss out the game when I say that. Aye, it's good to see the Villa, I love them to bits. But the 90 minutes can quite often ruin the day, in fact, the last 2 or 3 minutes often can. I don't think anyone that isn't a Villa fan can understand quite how many last minute equalisers and winners we have conceded over the years!!

It's a shame to see teams like Leeds, Bradford, Swindon, Oldham, Wimbledon, Sheffield Wednesday & United and how they have all struggled over the years since I was born. Obviously Wimbledon are back, but they should never have been put through what they have.

Football is all about greedy Chairmen, greedy league organisers and worst of all, Sky. Honestly, Sky and ESPN/Setanta/Premiership Plus etc have all taken the heart out of it. Football should be played at 3 o'clock on a Saturday, like it always was. Maybe one Sunday game a week is reasonable as well, for the wider audience. I'm led to believe that Football can't be shown at 3pm on a Saturday because it would mean a drop in crowds? I'm not so sure, by showing it at 5.20pm on Bonfire night etc will drop the crowds at that game a lot more. This needs to be changed - Villa have been granted with a trip to Stoke on Boxing Day - now changed to an 8pm kick off. It's not too far to travel, but why are there 8pm kick offs on Boxing Day? I notice Everton are away at West Brom at 12:30 on New Years Day!! Newcastle have to travel to Liverpool on the night of the 30th December. Norwich have a night match at Wolves on the 20th of December. Villa have a game at Swansea on a Sunday at 1.30. Madness. Football was always supposed to be a spectator sport. Unfortunately at this rate people will be stopping at home watching a Premier League game played in front of a few hundred people with no atmosphere. Something needs to change soon, because this would be the end.

Tottenham away on Monday the 21st. Can't wait!! ;)

I too have lost the energy to keep complaining at the idiotic decisions of that man. Then they defend the decision saying that it would attract a naming partner, the Newcastle supporters are not clueless, there is surely no benifit (other than for Ashley) to re-name the stadium after his company.

To say that I wasn't a fan of the name "Sports Direct Arena" would be a huge understatement. The actual name is a disgrace. The Sports Direct brand is awful, it's cheap, tacky and frankly the lowest of the low.

The name "arena" is particularly horrible, first and formost it's a stadium, arena sounds like some sort of circus (maybe apt in previous years but our perfomances aren't that bad at the moment!) and along with that brand name is a pritty yucky combination.

All in all I'm another furious Newcastle fan. Just as the fans seemed to be warming to Ashley, all of that warmth will have now evaporated instantly.

Also good on the council for refusing to take down the St James Park sign outside the ground and Nexus for immediately saying that the metro station would not be renamed.

I can assure everyone on this forum the name St James Park will never be forgotten, even if the name ends up as something ridiculous like the Gregg's arena. All supporters will continue to call it by it's (proper) name and if Mike Ashley thinks that he can get rid of a name that has lasted over 130 years without a fight, he has another thing coming!
