Who was actually credited with the ‘goal’? It must have been a bit of an embarrassment to him when his name ended on the scoresheet!

So that one thing 18 years ago should be held against him for evermore?
Yes. It was such an awful mistake he should never have been allowed to referee a football match again, not even in the pub league.

Trouble is, it’s not like his decision making has got any better in the years since.

I guess you have never made a mistake in life.
Stuart Atwell's charge sheet is a very long one, as any Google search will demonstrate.

He is an atrociously poor referee who shows no capacity for improvement, so @Tetchytyke is perfectly correct in saying he should not be refereeing at a professional level.

Of course people make errors, but there are professions where the avoidance of frequent mistakes is a requirement. Being a professional referee is one of those, and Atwell doesn't meet that criteria.

Some professional mistakes are so bad that they mean you should never be allowed to work again in that field. I don't see why that's controversial, doctors or lawyers who make serious errors will be struck off. If I dropped a clanger of that size at work I'd be expecting a meeting without tea and biscuits and I'd be expecting to get my P45.

I'd probably not be quite so firm in my opinion if it was the only mistake Attwell had ever made, but it isn't. He has never shown any ability to get any better. He's still making amateur errors pretty much every week.

Speaking of amateur errors, what happened at Old Trafford yesterday blew any of Arteta's complaints out of the water. The red card was an absolutely disgraceful decision and the decision to allow Man City's winner to stand was somehow even worse than that. I strongly dislike both Manchester clubs, they're both cheats, so have no skin in that game. But these are professional referees earning six-figure salaries, why are they seemingly so incapable of getting even the most basic decisions correct?

I watch Torquay and the worse the team plays it's all the refs fault and it gets really vitriolic.
League Two footballers make lots of mistakes so it is unfair to expect League Two referees to not make mistakes. But the refereeing standards in the lower leagues are absolutely horrific, I'm a Bradford fan and half the decisions in matches seem to be made by a random number generator.

I'm actually of the opinion that a decent minority of referees are actually corrupt. With all the money sloshing around the game, not to mention the south-east Asian betting companies all run by organised crime groups, I think it is a given that some of that cash ends up with referees. I think it would be naive to think it doesn't and I think the lower leagues are more attractive to those who wish to fix matches.

It’s great to enjoy going to the match again after the misery of last season, always nice to win this type of game and best of all no VAR.

Always a delight to see Celtic beaten again, even if it is by the other half of the old firm scum. It's been a very enjoyable week watching Celtic in fact. After the way they won the league last year, there is no misfortune that is big enough for them.
My prediction of the sentimental (and cheapskate) appointment of old man O'Neill not lasting until Halloween is starting to crystallise nicely.
His post-match gaslighting assessment of the match where he claimed "there was nothing between the teams" was as completely wrong as his tactical set-up, and was indicative of the bewildered and tired old man that he is. And to see the Celtic fans turn on their own team and become Rangers' 12th man in their own stadium shows what a pathetic and shallow fan base of glory hunters they are.
My only regret was that the TV director didn't show more Celtic fans' devastated faces at the end. A few more lingering shots of young Celtic fans crying would have been better :D

Redcar Town 2 v Darlington 4 - FA cup 78th preliminary round. Shown LIVE on BBC red button

Darlo laboured to beat a northern league side. at 2-1 we were rocking and if Redcar had gone for it I think we would have folded. We got through but it was not a good performance and we were, as usual, defensively shocking. We are int he next round though so that is a positive and we did come form behind to win but a decent side of any level would have seen us off.

Good news through: we signed another 18 year old on loan. Get in. We need blokes not kids.

I knew there were a number of FA Cup preliminary rounds....but 78 seems an awful lot...o_O

Good to see Darlo progress to yet another round. Bury did well in their 2nd qualifying round, beating Workington (who were on a run of five consecutive wins) ...5-1.

we will probably draw them next! We need the money from a cup run so the worst team left in the hat will do me. Draw for the 47 extra preliminary round is announced around 1300 today.

Bury did well in their 2nd preliminary round,

Second qualifying round - the preliminary round and the extra preliminary round before it were back in August

we will probably draw them next!

I'd love Halifax to get Darlo away in the 4th qualifying round (if you get that far). Nearest team to me left in the competition and we'd bring a decent few hundred to earn you a bit of money. And you'd probably beat us too

I never know what round it is at this stage tbh. Then they chuck in the FA trophy just to confuse me even more!

You haven't seen us play. We couldn't defend a castle! The draw will decide but I will be amazed if we get through the next round. I would rather we played at your place as we haven't won a home game for about 7 months!

They can't sack O'Neil yet, they need to wait until Leicester City sack Russell Martin, who would be an excellent replacement following his sparkling spell with the other ugly sister

I said long ago O'Neill should have gone in the summer. He did a fine job last year but is not the correct person to address the various issues in the squad. A rebuild is needed.

With the attitude of the owners, I’m not sure any manager can properly address the issues in the squad

Finally getting a decision on Man City's 115 charges by the looks of things:

What do the charges relate to?

In total, City were charged with 115 breaches of Premier League regulations.

The 115 charges have been broken down to five different categories.

• 54x Failure to provide accurate financial information 2009-10 to 2017-18.

• 14x Failure to provide accurate details for player and manager payments from 2009-10 to 2017-18.

• 5x Failure to comply with Uefa's rules including Financial Fair Play (FFP) 2013-14 to 2017-18.

• 7x Breaching Premier League's PSR rules 2015-16 to 2017-18.

• 35x Failure to co-operate with Premier League investigations December 2018 - Feb 2023.

But...
BBC Sport has also been told that, in the event of a defeat, Manchester City will appeal against the findings.
That could drag it on for another couple of years!

I'm curious how the Premier League can charge Manchester City with breaching UEFA's rules, unless the Premier League has a rule of its own stating that UEFA's rules must not be breached.

I think the uefa rules were incorporated into the premier league’s rules so therefore under the premier league’s jurisdiction

Have you a source for that supposition?
The current premier league handbook https://resources.premierleague.pul...book-and-Collateral-2026-27_Digital_31.07.pdf
has the following:
B.14. Membership of the League shall constitute an agreement between the League and
Club (both on its own behalf and on behalf of its Officials) and between each Club to
be bound by and comply with:
B.14.1. the Laws of the Game (and any protocols issued by IFAB);
B.14.2. The Football Association Rules;
B.14.3. the Articles;
B.14.4. these Rules;
B.14.5. the statutes and regulations of FIFA;
B.14.6. the statutes and regulations of UEFA; and
B.14.7. the Regulations of the Professional Football Compensation Committee,
each as amended from time to time.

I believe the Premier League case is looking at the period 2009-2018, so presumably those rules or something like them were incorporated by then.

As someone one (who was once briefly manager at Leeds United) reputedly said...

"As far as I'm concerned, the first thing you can do for me is to chuck all your medals and all your cups and all your pots and all your pans into the biggest f*****g dustbin you can find, because you've never won any of them fairly. You've done it all by bloody cheating".
