UEFA Europa League...3rd Qualifying Round.

Benfica 6 ... Heart of Midlothian 1

The gap in quality in the two leagues these teams play in was summed up by the scoreline.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Northern Premier League...Premier Division

Hyde United 0 ... Emley AFC 0

Redcar Athletic 0 ... Bury FC 0

A new season opens and clean sheets was the order of the day all around.

Forest Green Rovers 3-2 FC Halifax Town

A solid first half resulting in a 1-0 lead for Halifax, then we fell apart a bit second half before scoring an excellent stoppage time free kick consolation

Dylan "sick note" Crowe came on as sub and got subbed off injured after less than 5 minutes

A special word for the referee, and anyone bemoaning the standard of premier league officiating. Just spend 90 minutes watching the standard at our level. Utterly baffling decision making for both teams. Linesman gave a goal kick when two yards from a tackle and with a clear view; ref overruled him from 40 yards away. Gave 6 minutes injury time at the end. This included a Halifax goal, following FGR wasting time before a free kick. Ref played 5:58 and blew up with Halifax on the attack on the edge of their box. There was more, but I'm boring myself typing this, so I'll spare you the rest

The result was fair, the manner of it is a bit frustrating.

And Robbie Savage, obviously, was Robbie Savage

Interestingly, FGR have those electronic advert boards round the pitch and they kept putting "FREE PALESTINE" on them, which I'm pretty sure isn't allowed as its seen as a political statement.

Bury FC 3 ... Curzon Ashton 2

An attendance of 3,496 for a Tuesday night match between a side promoted from a lower level against a team relegated from a higher level at Gigg Lane saw Bury open the scoring, but Curzon scored twice before half-time. Bury
scored twice in the second half and their goalkeeper saved a Curzon second-half penalty.

Omg first game of the season and my team Reading who repeatedly lost points last season at the 90+6 minutes mark have done it again losing 3-4 after leading 3-1 after 38 minutes.

Football is back:

Darlington 0 v Worksop 2 - sigh. New season, same problems, same inability to defend.

Bedford 2 v Darlington 3 - last minute winner. Papers over the cracks of poor recruitment in the summer. Suspect we are in for a hard season.

Don't worry, you will get a win on Saturday. Playing my lot (AFC Wimbledon), we couldn't beat our way out of a paper bag at the moment. Managed to lose 3-0 after Huddersfield played for an hour with ten men. Painful to watch.

Darlington 0 v Chester City 1 - same old, same old. Play ok but without any real cutting edge. Give a soft goal away. Lose. Sigh. Long season ahead.

We have lost 50 goals out of the team and not replaced them, we have lost an absolute energiser bunny in Jack Maskell pressing from the front and have not signed a decent defender AGAIN. We have a soft centre, lack strength and physicality and organisation and we have done for a few years.

sigh. :(

PS - yes, it is early but when you know you know. I have seen it to many times.

The worst performance I have watched from Villa since the dark days of the Championship. We have shot ourselves in the foot - all four goals coming from defensive errors. Joao Gomes lost his head early on, resulting in one of the worst debuts in PL history. Poor management by Emery to not hook him beforehand. Something needs to change before next weekend, otherwise it will be a dismal night on Bank holiday Monday. I can only see it getting worse until the team learns how to play together and our injured players recover.

(Trivia) Having been relegated to Northern Premier League Division One East in 2024, Bradford hadn't played anywhere west of the Pennines for almost a year.

But thanks to wider regionalization zones in the FA Cup and FA Trophy, Park Avenue now face trips to grounds served by three adjacent stations on the Huddersfield - Manchester Victoria line on successive Saturdays. These are Mossley, Stalybridge Celtic and Curzon Ashton.

What are the odds?

Thanks for the optimism but as you know couldn't break down your defence this time confidence for AFC Wimbledon!
Alot of new players for Reading have to gel but fear going to be a long season. Stevenage tonight!

Sigh. Cant defend. 2-1 up at half time and playing ok. Gave away 4 silly goals, 2 of them from our own attacking set pieces.

Reading were the better side and should have won. We only woke up after 70 minutes of defending when surely the idea of being at home is to attack. The attack is woeful and I also fear a long (stressful) season !
