Tottenham Hotspurs. Going down?

Sadly it looks like a choice of spuds or cockney west ham for the final relegation berth. The agony of choice. Why can't they both go down?

All I can say to that is ‘come on Burnley’…

Seems strange to think that my local club, Bromley, could potentially be playing the likes of Leicester City or West Brom next season ( or even my supported team , ,Charlton Athletic !

Nearly as strange as Lincoln City being promoted to the Championship.

Meanwhile, the Gingerbreads (Grantham Town) looked second best at relegation fodder, Ashby Ivanhoe last night; going down 2-1. Still, at least we're in the play-off zone, and could still win the league, with four games to play.

A relative of mine is a Spurs fan living in Lincoln.

I see it's 40 years since the most amazing match I ever attended, with my German cousin. European Cup Winners Cup quarter final 2nd leg, Bayer Uerdingen v Dynamo Dresden, West v East, in Krefeld. Dresden won the first leg 2-0 and were 3-1 up on the night at half time. In the second half Uerdingen scored 6 without reply and the place was rocking as Uerdingen took the tie 7-5. Uerdingen went out to Barcelona in the semis and at least one Dresden player absconded after the game rather than head back behind the iron curtain. Uerdingen lost their Bayer sponsorship decades ago and are now festering in the Oberliga, Tier 5 of the German pyramid. But for one fantastic night....

We were having a conversation about our favourite bits of football commentary in the office today.

My favourite was this one, that the guys hadn't heard before. It's in Dutch, but that's not really relevant.

For those that don't remember, this was the 89th minute of a world cup quarter final against arch rivals Argentina, with the score at 1-1. It's also an absolutely sublime piece of skill. The commentator is a bloke called Frank de Jong, and he was RTLs version of Barry Davies for many years. But this was when he lost it......! See if you can spot who it was that scored.....

That was of course the game England would have played in had we not gone out on Penalties to the Argies in the previous round. As a result, my best mate was at that game, right in line behind Bergkamp when he hit it. Wearing an England shirt. In with a load of Argentina fans. Went berserk when that went in. Lost his shirt as a result (by swopping it for an Argentina one )

£8,297 for a Category 1 World Cup final ticket! Let's hope it doesn't rain as the MetLife stadium doesn't have any cover, even though the NFL plays over the winter.

But they're playing the final late at night, so at least they won't fry. I did on my one and only visit in late summer 2011 to see NY Giants lose to Seattle.

I remember having to take four subway/trains of various sorts to get there from my hotel in Manhattan. The stadium has its own branch line from Secaucus Junction.

A Bank Holiday Good Friday fixture attracted a very good attendance of 4,790 at Gigg Lane to see a visiting team from the lower section of the league take a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute and that score remained until the 73rd minute when Bury finally broke a stubborn Congleton defence down and scored four goals in eleven minutes. This result consolidated Bury's position at the top of the league.

Altrincham 0-1 FC Halifax Town

Good Friday rather than the usual Boxing Day this season. A match that had every kind of weather apart from snow, which was a shame as the away end is totally uncovered.

We were the better team for the first half hour, more even after that. Both teams hit the bar. Matty Kosylo (once of us, now of them) got his customary card, a slightly fortunate yellow that might have been red.

And we won it in the 94th minute, the players all celebrated right in front of us, and my kids ran down the front and joined in

Another game decided by a late, late goal - I was at both - this time very undeservedly as Dunston scrambled it home from a rare corner in one of their very few attacks. Bradford's play-off hopes are now in tatters and we face another season in the Parks League.

The Altrincham programme ran a feature on a 2013 Halifax - Alty game which featured no fewer than 11 players with past or future Bradford connections across the two squads. Most were way above the standard of those in our present team. It just goes to show how our standards have slipped, almost unperceptively, as we have fallen down the leagues.

But my trip to Dunston gave me an excuse for an excellent rail tour - out from Hooton via Liverpool, Wigan, the S&C and Carlisle and back on a Newcastle - Liverpool working diverted via Castleford and Brighouse. Paid for mostly by Delay Repay vouchers.

I was congratulating him on being at the top the tape albeit on GD.
What infuriates me is how the playoffs work in The National league:

• Position 1 : Promotion to League 2
• Position 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 : Promotion Play-off

So lets says for instance as it stands, York were in the playoffs on 98 points and Southend on 68 points beat them, how can this be fair with a 30 point difference?

When York City played Oldham Athletic in the play-offs not so long ago, when Oldham, a founder member team of the Premiership, won promotion back to League 2, what position did both team finish in the league that season, as I am fairly sure that York finished in a higher position?

As recently as season 2024/25. York City had finished 2nd in the National League with 96 points, Oldham Athletic had finished a distant 5th with 73 points. In the play-offs, Oldham then beat sixth-placed FC Halifax Town 4-0 at home, second-placed York City 3-0 at York and seventh-placed Southend United 3-2 at Wembley Stadium, thus winning promotion back to League Two.

That play off system is coming to the Championship next season. Top 2 promoted, 3rd to 8th in the playoffs.

At least it gives Spurs a fighting chance of returning to the top flight.

Any playoff system risks a team with significantly fewer points beating a team that just missed out on promotion. Do you think 4 team playoffs are acceptable but 6 team playoffs are not? It seems a strange logic to me!

All clubs know the situation before the season starts, and it gives more of them a chance of promotion at season's end. Say York and Southend finish as shown, and Southend beat York, but next season the play-offs are reduced to 4 teams, or abolished altogether, and York finish 7th but are now denied the promotion opportunity?

The FORTH time this season we've conceded points in the 96th minute in about 10 games to concede points. A shambles in midfield, ball given away and own players bumping into each other and Lincoln score to make sure of promotion. Congratulations to them.
