Some very sad news: Liverpool forward Diego Jota has died in a car crash in Spain.

Diogo Jota killed along with his brother just 10 days after the Portugal forward got married. He had three children.

Really terrible news and my thoughts are with his poor wife and family.....and of course the poor parents who have lost both their sons in this awful incident.
I always liked him as a player.....really hard-working, versatile either out wide or as a striker, and a very unselfish player. And it appears from the tributes from his peers, really well liked in the game as well. Fan tributes have been touching too....he always made time for fans, was an ever-present whenever the club visited children in hospital and he did all those other community club things that other footballers don't often do. He also showed something very rare in the average successful highly paid young footballer......humility.

What a lovely tribute. How sad it is that it seemingly takes nothing less than the terrible loss of two such young and happy lives to unite the football world. I hope their loved ones can take some solace and comfort in the outpouring of near-universal love and respect for Jota from Liverpool and elsewhere. The song is true: you'll never walk alone.

The standard has undoubtedly been raised over the last decade. The skill and entertainment level is generally excellent. Often a joy to watch.

What really hasn’t improved though is the goalkeeping. So many goals are conceded not due to good finishing, but awful goalkeeping. Why the level of goalkeeping hasn’t improved compared to outfield play, I don’t know.

I'll borrow your tin hat and guess it is because a 6ft woman goalkeeper will not have the same strength of a 6ft male goalkeeper and able to cover the size of a goal in terms of diving ability. I think that is why more long shots go in during women's games.

Yes, Earps was exceptional. I watch quite a lot of women's football. The female goalkeepers tend to fall into two categories : (i) tall, but willowy so able to catch well but not to get down so quickly or punch and (ii) shorter and stocky. The latter are physically strong, can punch and throw well and can intimidate strikers when coming out to their feet. On the downside, their height limitations leave them open to long range shots or lobs. These extremes are far more apparent in the female game.

Agreed but I think the goalkeeping will improve when we train them like men. I feel like female keepers have a small fear of the ball hence the poor keeping in games. That will come with time and the standard will rise

England Women squeaked through their quarter final against Sweden. Conceded early and looked decidedly second best in the first half, but managed to come back to level 2-2 towards the end of the 90 minutes. Eventually went to penalties, which were fairly terrible. Only 5 scored from 14 taken.
