Sunderland 2-1 Stoke

A deserved win against opponents who wasted time throughout. Teenager Tommy Watson scored both goals for Sunlun after Lewis Koumas (I remember his dad playing - makes me feel old) had given Stoke the lead early on.

For some reason a premier league ref - Craig Pawson - was appointed to the game and he was awful throughout. He warned assorted Stoke players for delaying the restart 7 times just in the first half, but never booked anyone so they just carried on

And the weather. Wow. A blustery, howling wind and driving rain throughout, and yet the quality of passing and first touches was pretty much immaculate.

Just think of the days when mist/fog affected matches, matched played in near-blizzard conditions and sodden pitches when the ball stopped dead in a puddle when normally good pitch drainage is overcome.

My original posting, which I reiterated to the other contributor, only concerned "top level" stadiums. If matches are played in the type of conditions that you make mention of, any skilled player would not be able to perform to the best of their ability.

Northern Premier League...Premier Division

Leek Town 1 ... Hyde United 1

This was one of only three matches allowed to start and there was an attendance of 402 at the F.Ball Community Stadium. Leek belied their lowly league position and took the lead in the 33rd minute and it was not until the second half, in the 71st minute, that Hyde manage to equalise. Hyde are in 5th place, but now have a habit of drawing too many matches, this season in 20 league matches, winning 8, drawing 8 and losing 4.

FA Trophy 3rd round, Stockton Town 2, Oldham Athletic 0. Atrocious conditions for both teams and I did wonder if the game was going to be called off at the last minute. A crowd of 1545 watched a solid 1st half in which Oldhams only real chance hit the crossbar. In the 2nd half Stockton were totally dominant. A goal in the 53rd minute by captain Adam Nicholson. Michael Sweet's goal in the 58th minute was flagged offside but scored again in 92nd minute to secure the game. Lots of chances were created throughout the half by different players & Stockton could easily have had 4 or 5. Oldham only had another shot across the goal late in the half.

Another good win for Birmingham City, winning 2-1 at Barnsley, with over 5,000 Blues supporters filling the away end.

Meanwhile in the Championship, QPR won 3-0 against Norwich to move up to 20th place and Plymouth drop into a relegation spot despite not playing.

As much as I was disappointed the Liverpool game was called off it makes the titel race more intersting - if you are a neutral! More impressed with Wrexham and getting 1-0 wins - could be the best finish in League 1!

Yes, but as good as L1 is Wycombe seem to be dropping points of late and with the money Blues and Wrexham have at their disposal they will do very well to keep pace with them.

Wycombe are a breath of fresh air - being Welsh I am supporting Wrexham but I hope they get back to winning ways soon to make it a good fight! Huddersfield have won 4 in a row too so not a 3 horse race!

This was once of the few matches in this league actually played and the prevailing weather seemed not to put off the crowd support with an attendance of 2,574.

Bury are third in the league table, two points less than long-standing league leaders, Ramsbottom United, but with a game in hand and a better goal difference.

One of my old friends, of Scottish descent, told me to keep an eye on this weekend's scores in the SWL Scottish Cup (3ed round), as there was likely to be one match with a high score.

I have just looked up today's match results and there were two. not one, such high-scoring games.....

We took the lead and held it at 1-1 until 60 minutes but York were just to good in the end. A full time team, flying at the top of the conference with a good bit of investment behind them is what told in the long run.

Coote, 42, was suspended by the PGMOL (the Professional Game Match Officials Limited) on 11 November pending a full investigation after a video allegedly showing him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and the club's former manager Jurgen Klopp was circulated on social media.

A further investigation was opened two days later after the Sun published photos it says were taken during this summer's European Championship, alleging that they appear to show Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled up US bank note.

The PGMOL said Coote's actions made his position "untenable".

"David Coote's actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract," the PGMOL said.

Neil Harris appears to have left Millwall after a great run of form after referring to some fans as ‘thickos’ and criticising the club transfer policy after last weekends game.

Stoke were time wasting at 1-0 up and were surprisingly twitchy after conceding an equaliser. We undoubtedly played better than of late but it was difficult to tell how much of an improvement it was when the opposition appeared to be a nervous wreck!

I don’t doubt for one minute that Stoke were poor to say the least, it’s just refreshing that the manager doesn’t put the blame for a defeat onto everything else but his teams performance.

I've definitely seen Stoke play far worse (under Neil and Schumacher) - their current problem does appear to be trying to hold onto a lead with far too much game time remaining, rather than trying to emphatically secure the win.

Stoke spent 80+ minutes time wasting at Sunderland on Saturday.

Got the same result though!

(And Sunderland play them again in the reverse league fixture in less than three weeks, and again shortly after that in the FA Cup. Deep joy)

563 turned up at the Project Solar Stadium for the visit of 2nd place Guiseley. Hyde took the lead in the 24th minute, but Guiseley equalised 15 minutes from the end. Out of 21 league matches played so far this season, Hyde have now drawn nine of these and this result sees them in sixth place.

Birmingham City won 2-0 v Bristol Rovers to go second in the table, just one point behind the leaders and with a game on hand.

In the championship, sheffield United had a comfortable 2-0 home win against Plymouth. Under Ruiney's leadership Plymouth have the worst goal difference in the championship, have lost 55% of their league games and had scored less than a goal a game.

However some here still think he is doing a good job!
