Despite Plymouth being one of our (Oxford United) rivals for relegation from the Championship, I actually feel a little sorry for Wayne Rooney; He is an example of why being a brilliant player does not automatically lead to being a brilliant manager. And some of the chants directed at him and his wife from opposition fans are just vile.
I quite agree with this. Plymouth were extremely lucky to get nil on Saturday, and by all accounts their best player was their goalkeeper. That absolutely doesn't justify the chanting directed at him. Give him the same respect as any other manager.

Oscar Wilde's musings about the sport come to mind.

The FA cup tie between Liverpool and Accrington Stanley will no doubt remind some of us of this 1980s milk advert
That was in the days when Accrington were in the lower reaches of non-league, having reformed in 1968 after going out of business several years earlier

For lower level clubs looking for an away draw at a top flight club in the draw for the third round of the FA Cup, five of them got their wish....
Manchester City v Salford
Liverpool v Accrington Stanley
Chelsea v Morecambe
Newcastle United v Bromley
Crystal Palace v Stockport County.
Not quite PL but Leeds United v Harrogate Town should also be included here, the proximity of the clubs adding a little extra spice.

It might add spice for the media and the Harrogate fans but I doubt Leeds fans see it as anything more than a minor inconvenience.

I'm sure the Leeds second string are looking forward to a rare first team appearance.

At least this time round Manchester United being picked as one of the live TV games for the umpteenth time makes sense from a footballing point of view

Secure in the knowledge that they won't be in the fourth round onwards. ;)
Last season, they were matched with Liverpool in the semi-final and Manchester City in the final. Strange results occur in the FA Cup.

98 of their last 99 FA cup ties have been on live TV. Ridiculous
Are you saying the club are forcing the TV schedulers to do this?

No, of course not

I’m saying TV schedulers - particularly commercial ones - are unduly driven by their advertisers and are wholly unimaginative
Commercial TV companies receive advertising revenue in order to exist, so the word "unduly" does not apply. If these companies took a stand against their advertisers, how do you feel the outcome may look?

They are commercial companies and advertising is critical revenue. What do you expect them to do other than maximise revenue?

They might get more viewers! There is no romance of the FA cup in Manchester United. It is unduly dull to televise them yet again. Unduly dull.

Do you really think such a noble ambition would be taken by the commercial T V companies that could have a sizeable financial drop in advertising revenue that most certainly would happen. They are not charitable institutions with altruistic motives.

no - but my view is they could get just as good an audience share by showing a much more romantic tie.

EDIT - this, afterall, is the FA cup and part of that ( at least in the media) is "romance" - putting Man UTD on every week is like taking your date to McDonalds romance wise!

If commercial broadcasters were solely driven by advertising revenue Coronation Street would be on four times a day, seven days a week.

Any economist will tell you that one of the drivers of customer demand is scarcity. Having Manchester United on every round is a nonsense from that point of view.

And the FA could and probably should do more to limit the number of times a single team can be chosen for coverage, and from a commercial perspective it’s hardly as if MUFC are the only team with loads of armchair supporters

I take your point, but the views of football fans do not fare well financially when compared to the annual financial turnover of TV commercial companies....or football clubs for that matter.
Fully comfortable with the commercial side - I just think that it is lazy/easy to pick Manchester Untied. Are they still as big a draw? I am not so sure

Do the FA have any control over what matches are shown on TV, for if so, noting the point that was raised, the FA have to share in the responsibility.

I know of an old lady, now in her 90s, who would be absolutely delighted with such a TV scheduling....

Yes, in that they let the broadcast contracts, but clearly don’t include any stipulation at the moment

I was a fan of Ian Rush as a kid. And whenever I hear the words "Accrington Stanley" I always think "Who are they?".

Has the matter in discussion on this thread ever been actually a matter of discussion with the FA, as what seems a good idea to supporters of football clubs, has no bearing whatsoever on the decision-making of the FA.

I'd be absolutely stunned if it had been discussed by the FA, because they really don't care about what the rank and file supporters think. All they care about is money, and extracting as much of it as possible from as many people and organisations as possible

Well said. In that case, would the matter of supporters deciding to totally ignore any FA cup matches have any real bearing, when considering the actual gate receipts against the advertising revenue generated on each match that was televised.

Since there are two teams playing in each of those matches, how many of the other teams have been involved in those 98 matches?

Yes, because there’s far more people wanting them to lose than win (some are really easy to find as they use terms like Man Ure and support nonentity clubs with no rivalry to them).

I've no idea without going back through all 100 games, but clearly far fewer than if both teams were being picked based on the attractiveness of the match, rather than one team based on "drawn against Manchester United"

I think it is safe to put Brentford into the 4th round draw, they have the delights of a home game against the abysmally mis managed Plymouth.

Watching the Tamworth draw reveal live (see link below) is enjoyable. Then throw in the added bonus of their little sing song at the end really makes it

(Link is a video of Tamworth's clubhouse, watching them being drawn against Tottenham at home in the third round.)

When I really enjoyed football my ideal would be able to pay for whatever game took my fancy that day. I'm not paying to become a utd season ticket holder on tv.

One of my pathetic analogies is wanting a bit of fish and being told it only comes with chips and peas.

I said that when I only wanted sky sports and nothing else but the said it was an add on to the basic package.

You can see why folk use alternative viewing devices.
