Having the richest league and best funded FA doesn't give us better players than other countries. If anything, we improve other countries by bringing so many of their players here to learn to play at a high level.

Absolutely no issue here about him being the face of the win. He's took pelters all tournament for being used as a failed experiment so to come on and take the decisive fifth penalty like that, deserves all the praise thrown his way. If he'd have missed that penalty and Switzerland had gone on to win it you can bet your bottom dollar 'Trent' would have lost it all on his own.

Because it should facilitate proper funding of youth and management development which in turn should drive improvement in national team performance.
England perform less well than they should, whereas other countries like Slovenia outperform massively

One could argue (well it’s a forum so why not), that England even when they are playing ‘poorly’ are still better than many countries who are playing well.

How well should they perform? World Cup semi-finals followed by beaten on penalties in Euro 2021 final followed by World Cup quarter-finals and now in Euro 2024 semis. Performing better would mean basically getting to the final of everything every time, which no premier national team manages to do ever.
Slovenia are a typical mid-ranking European country, who have only progressed to the knockout stages once (this time), so they have much in common with most countries around their level. Not sure how their performances can be defined as outperforming massively.
Bear in mind as well that all European countries (except micro nations) have extensive youth development programmes at dozens of professional clubs, with all but the very smallest having thousands of young players given the fullest opportunity to develop. The club I support in Sweden plays in the third tier but has over 100 teams competing in its set-up from the senior sides through the academy right down to small kids.

It’s a weird one. I don’t think it should have been a penalty but you do see a lot of free kicks given in broadly similar circumstances where a defender clears the ball as he’s closed down by an attacker and kicks the attackers outstretched foot.
