First game of the Women’s World Cup.
A player goes down after the slightest of contacts and ‘wins’ a free kick.
The match commentator calls it clever play.
No it isn’t, it’s called cheating……
Forgot that was starting. I wonder if the commentators will be unable to say anything negative as per previous versions.

It’s not cheating if you actually get fouled. It’s part of the game.

Is anyone surprised at certain of the players who are middle-East bound in this current rush for wealth accumulation?

Why bother being in charge of an FTSE top 100 company when you can get paid substantially more by kicking a ball around.

Football (particularly the top leagues in Europe and now in the middle East) is in a complete parallel universe to the world that the average fan lives in.

Looking at the now-current state of affairs in football, recently I saw a newspaper picture of fans outside a club owners house demanding that the club owner leaves the club and carrying home-made banners saying "it's our club"

Imagine if those fans were given the opportunity to run the football club, how would they raise the required finance to successfully run the club, especially in the higher echelons of the football pyramid?

Forgive my ignorance, which group of fans are you referring to above, as my contention concerned the total removal of large finance conglomerates and leaving the fans in total charge of the club.
You asked about potential sources of finance for running a top club.

I (jokingly) suggested that the Glazer's strategy of loading debt on a club and not putting any of your own money in could be an option for those with limited means.

Yet if you look at my first posting, the fans discussed there wanted to be in sole charge of running the club and they wanted rid of the "moneybags" running the club.

Sorry, I really don't have time to review all your postings. I was only responding to the one I replied to.

If your interest in how fan-owned clubs could operate is genuine, I suggest it might be useful for you to undertake some research into how many of the fan-owned football clubs in the Bundesliga operate.

Does that presuppose the football authorities in England who are charged with looking after the game here have exactly the same mindset as their German equivalent. Matters such as a fit organisation to run a club springs to mind.

My club loyalties lie with Hyde United

Wanting the current owner out of their club does not indicate that they are necessarily wanting to take charge. And the individual in question at Southend United, a certain Ron Martin, is certainly not behaving in the manner of a "moneybags" - the current protests result from the club being heavily in debt, with a winding up order in the courts from HMRC and players and staff going unpaid for months on end.

There are already a number of "fan owned" clubs in England. Local to you is FC United of Manchester, elsewhere in the Football League examples are AFC Wimbledon and Exeter City. However, their are other models which fit the same description and I can confidently say that my own club, Luton Town, is fan owned.

Then why were those fans protesting outside Ron Martin's house, if you are correct in your assumption? Why not outside premises of HMRC?

FC Unted play in the same league and division as my favoured Hyde United...and we usually do well against them...

Bizarre incident at the Dunston v Gateshead pre-season match up in the North East tonight...

Extract from the BBC news story...
A Gateshead FC match has been called off in chaos after a funeral hearse and a car were driven onto the pitch.

The National League club's friendly against Dunston was abandoned at half-time amid extraordinary scenes which stunned watching supporters.

And the local press write-up here...

Dunston UTS FC were playing a home fixture against Gateshead FC on Friday evening when the bizarre incident happened

Because they appreciate that taxes should be paid and non-payment is not the fault of HMRC but of Ron Martin. They also appreciate that HMRC is not reponsible for paying the wages of staff of Southend United FC and numerous other creditors.

I am not sure of the law that relates to occasions such as the gathering of a certain number of people outside the home premises of an individual in what could be seen as a planned gathering of protest. Would the police have to be notified in advance of such a protest and to have officers there? I am sure that some website members could give an answer to this query.

There is no requirement to notify the police of your intention to assemble in one place. There is a requirement if you intend to march on the road as a group.

On the subject of fan ownership, my club Exeter has been fan owned since 2003. We did admittedly receive two lucky breaks - the owners were desperate to sell due to a combination of relegation to the Conference and the fact two of the directors during the 2002-03 season were subsequently convicted of fraudulent training. The club was heavily in debt and entered a CVA in 2004. The second piece of luck was that having beaten Grimsby and Doncaster in R1 and R2 of the FA Cup, we drew Manchester United away, for which we received 1/3 of the gate receipts. A 0-0 draw followed by a televised replay helped even more.

The general consensus is that we've achieved more under fan ownership than we managed in 80 years as a league club under private ownership. 3 promotions and just 1 relegation, a joint highest post-war league position in 2011 of 8th in L1, redeveloping two of our aging stands, redeveloping the training ground and investing in our youth academy which has produced players such as Ollie Watkins and Ethan Ampadu.

We've had some luck as acknowledged above, but most fans are pretty content with Trust ownership. We do have a glass ceiling in L1, but we never got very close to going further than that under private ownership, and the last time it even looked possible was circa 1980. When you consider the number of clubs whose fans have disgruntlement (to say the least) with current or recent owners, few of us would swap.

I seem to remember this mentioned on TV a good while ago that when Torquay Utd were having similar financial trouble, Exeter were drawn against them in one of the rounds of a cup tournament. Exeter had let Torquay have all of the gate money from that match and foregone their share.

I'm going back to when the highlights of the present day Football League (2nd - 4th tiers) were shown on Auntie Beeb after Match of the Day.

Sad news that Trevor Francis passed away earlier today of a heart attack in Marbella aged just 69.
