Regarding MK Dons upthread, it is a little over 20 years ago when as the original Wimbledon, they controversially played their first match at the National Hockey Stadium.

There was already a precedent that had been set when in Scotland Meadowbank Thistle (started out as Ferranti Thistle in 1948 as a works side, but changed name to the area of Edinburgh as advertising was not allowed at the time) relocated to the New Town of Livingston in 1995 when Dominic Keane purchased the outfit.

In both instances, it was effectively buying a place in the league rather than starting from scratch and working way up through the divisions.

Think the same happened in 2002 when Airdrieonians FC went bust. Gretna FC got voted in to the Scottish League to fill the vacant space, and so the newly established Airdrie United club had to buy out / take over / rename the struggling Clydebank FC, in order to get to play in the Scottish League themselves.

...and if you go back to 1965, the same Clydebank, then a Junior club owned by the Steedman Bros, tried to buy their way into the Scottish League by buying East Stirling. They played for a while as Clydebank ES.

Essentially, lack of funds / cashflow, they ran out of money after just about completing the 1966-67 season. Got wound up after a builder took them to the Court of Session in Edinburgh for non-payment of work done on the not long since completed grandstand at Cathkin Park.

If you read the story of their demise on Wikipedia, it is a dark and sorry tale. It is thought that if the Chairman had not died of a heart attack, chances are he would have been put in prison, such was the level of corruption

Indeed. Third Lanark chairman Bill Hiddleston was, shall we say, a "character", although he didn't actually die until five months or so after Thirds had gone out of business.

So it was. I watched the Queens Park v Dundee match on the beeb website last night one of the most entertaining games I’ve seen. Dubious quality mind

I tuned in early on it was 1-0 Dundee, two minutes later Queens Park were 2-1 up, real end to end stuff throughout.

Another goalfest was the Scottish Youth Cup Final, Celtic 6 Rangers 5, can't stand either of them but there was a cracking back heel goal by Celtic,while the Rangers striker got a yellow for diving then a second also for diving!

At the wrong end Accrington Stanley, Morecambe & Milton Keynes Dons were relegated, MK Dons after they could only draw 0-0 at Burton & Cambridge United beat Forest Green 2-0 to overtake them.

31 shots against Burton and no goals is exactly why MK were relegated. Not enough quality and we're down in the tramp league next season, but this time there probably won't be an instant return.

In 'news from crap overseas leagues', the big story from the Polish Ekstraklasa is that Ślask Wrocław, a team owned by the city of Wrocław and notorious for being nothing more than a cesspit of political corruption, is on the way down. The team is incredibly badly run to the point where the city is pouring millions into it every year, money is being stolen from various other municipal businesses to pay for it, and now they're facing the situation that they'll have to pay around 2-3m Euro just to get rid of the highest earners in the event of relegation.

I'm hoping to attend their next game simply to cheer on their opponents, because anything less than a win will send them down. And if they get relegated, perhaps the team will finally fall and taxpayers will no longer have to bail them out to the tune of around 5m-6m Euro yearly.

I would argue that it's become very unfair to have the weak League 2 teams play off against teams that have come through the much stronger Lowland League. Another reason to reform the league structure!

WOW, I have vivid memories of that result and the fact that they scored 15 goals in the second half, I was only 11 at the time and it intrigued me that they scored a goal every three minutes. I wonder how many they missed too?!!

I try to resist the temptation to comment on football here, but the great escape of the Mighty Us has been the stuff of fantasy.

It is worth looking back at the League 1 bottom 6 as it stood before kick off on 1 April.

Having been 8 points from safety, 5 of the remaining 9 games were won to avoid relegation. When the Mighty Us moved out of the bottom 4 on the final day it was for the first time since January.
