VAR is ruining football at the top level. I said it would..........................

(And if you think refs in the PL are bad come and try national league north. You PL guys don't have a clue!)

I wouldn't - I would ask the refs to make a statement after the game about any controversial incidents. Let them explain why they made a decision. That would be more educational.

The European Cup and The Champions League are different competitions. There is an argument over which is better or perhaps more "pure" but that is about it. Personally, I like the fact that Real Madrid could be knocked out in the first round by FC Kraplackistan but we all know that is unacceptable to those with the power to make decisions and thier rights holders these days!
Yep having two teams in the final that have lost four games in the competition demeans it. Especially if you add to it that neither were Champions of their league

Really? Why? Because VAR is only correcting 90% of bad on field decisions we should revert to 0% rather than try to get closer to 100%?

What else? Players in hob-nailed boots, pitches that are mudbaths in winter, kit made of wool, goalies without gloves but with compulsory flat caps?
My objection to VAR is that it has nullified the visceral experience of goal scoring. It cheats the emotions of participants and spectators.

VAR also is being used outside its original selling point. It was sold as a way to correct obvious errors, but is being used to adjudicate fag-paper offsides with lasers. No thank you. I’m comfortable with error and subjectivity in the game.

No, I don’t think it is. The *application* of VAR is ruining top level football. Rugby Union uses their version of VAR and gets it pretty much spot on.
Rugby Union is a minority sport played in front of league 1 crowds at best where you cant even call the ref a chunt and the ball is the wrong shape. I will take no lessons from them! ;)

@AlterEgo has the reason spot on
What would the referee say? ‘I gave offside because I (or the linesman) thought it offside’.
Perhaps he could explain, with reference to his knowledge of the of the laws, why he or she did or did not give a penalty. You don't want Shearer and co commentating on referring issues, possibly because they don't know the laws, so why not have someone who is supposed to know the laws explain it.

We all might learn something and then stop slagging the refs off for making decisions we don't agree with. Those views are usually based on our own less than perfect understanding of the laws of the game!

Correct!

Roy of the Rovers 2023:

Race has crashed in the rocket from 30 yards in what must be one the greatest goals Mel Park has ever seen. It could well be goal of the centua............... oh no the VAR official has ruled in out as Blackie Grey had a big toe nail one microbe offside.

It is Melchester 0 - Tynecastle 0 Jeff.

I'm not a fan of VAR, and the application of it in English football is awful. Decisions that are not obvious errors are changed and that was not the intention of VAR. As for egg chasing, the use of VAR (called Television Match Official or TMO) is clearly to allow decisions to be made by reviewing an incident after it has occurred and prior to a decision being made. However, it also uses much more time than in football - during the France v Scotland match last Saturday there had only been 11 minutes of play in the first 20 minutes of the match, the rest being taken up by TMO decisions and discussions with the on-field officials. I wouldn't want to see that sort of delay introduced to football.

Also worth remembering rugby is a technical and rules-heavy sport where players can occasionally be killed or suffer life changing injuries.

It’s also the anti-football in that (for Union anyway) it’s the preserve sport of posh schools, the Army and other bastions of authority and class. Rules are key, and the authority of the referee is unquestioned. He’s a gentleman (or a lady!) and not a spoilsport so and so.

Football is a game of universal appeal and the referee is in charge but doesn’t occupy the same cultural position as the rugby or cricket referee. Rules in football, for years, have actually operated on consensus, custom and practice regardless of what the Laws say. That’s why you have the cliché of “well, I don’t think you can give a PENALTY for THAT” describing a minor infringement that would be a foul in midfield but not “bad enough” to award a penalty for. See also the non-enforcement of foul throws (“who cares?”), and so on etc etc.

Exactly. Using a rugby-style VAR in football wouldn’t be so time consuming because there’d be fewer incidents to review and football’s laws are a lot less technical. The example of the France v Scotland game is correct, but perhaps a little disingenuous as there were two red cards in those 20 minutes which is highly unusual, and each required multiple replays to clearly establish whether there was direct contact to the head)

Really don’t know what you read to arrive at that. Just go back to the referee & linesmen/lineswomen running the game.

Having said that, going back to the suggestions in your post would probably result in a better ‘game’ :D

Note: I support Stoke City. We score so few goals that VAR would rarely be an issue even if used :'(

Going back to the "good old days", anyone on this thread remember playing in a minor league match in the rain with a real leather football that became sodden as the match went along? I remember playing in a match at Manchester University in 1962 against Hesketh Casuals and we had a right-winger who could emulate such a heavy sodden football being rocket launched when taking a corner and both defenders and attackers attempting to get out of the way of the said projectile as attempting to head the ball would have rendered anyone unconscious....

I certainly remember my school days. When there was a goal kick players used to line up on the edge of the penalty area because that was about as far as the goalkeeper could kick the ball. As for actually getting it up off the ground, you could forget that.

Yes certainly needed the new rules about your own players being allowed in the penalty area!

Northern Premier League...Premier Division

Nantwich 0 ... Hyde United 1

Another away match for Hyde today against a team needing points to pull away from their low league position and it was goal-less at half time, but Hyde eventually broke through in the 70th minute and ended with a clean sheet. Three more useful points to consolidate their second place in the league and to keep amongst the teams who will form the play-off places.

Winchester City 1...Swindon Supermarine 6 (SIX) (Bentley 45+2; Harding 5, pen 7, 59, 65, McDonagh 11, Duffus 57)

Absolute disaster. Highlights include the ref looking like Putin, them getting a penalty for an obvious dive, two stonewall penalties being waved away and a third being given as a free kick despite being two yards inside the box.

Other Results:

Dorchester Town 2...Gosport Borough 2

Hanwell Town 0...Weston-Super-Mare 1

Harrow Borough 0...Merthyr Town 1

Hendon 3...Plymouth Parkway 1

Met Police 0...Salisbury 3

North Leigh 0...Bracknell Town 5

Poole Town 3...Chesham United 3

Tiverton Town 1...Beaconsfield Town 2

Truro City 1...Hayes & Yeading United 0

Yate Town 0...Hartley Wintney 1

League Table

15. Hanwell Town P33 GD -10 38pts
16. Winchester City P33 GD -19 35pts
17. Gosport Borough P32 GD -16 34pts

As long as that's the Manchester United who turn up for our game against them in the FA Cup in a couple of weeks or so, I'll be happy :D

Alfreton 2 v Darlington 2 - Darlo 2 goals up threw it away with more poor defending. We are on a bad run of form.

So this time it was Fat Rhead rather than Tom Denton? Either way you got Billy Heathed.

Just looked at the teams, didn’t realise Adriano Moke was at Darlo now, he was decent when we had him but that’s a decade ago.

And you have Tom Taylor in nets! He was in goal for those horrible lot at Garforth back in 2010 when Halifax were 3-1 down after 90 minutes and then scored 3 goals in 3 minutes to win it. Absolute scenes, as they say

it was Rhead. We always struggle against Alfreton but it hardly a surprise how they play!

he is a good player. We got him after Spennymoor released him. he has done well for us.

He has been solid. The best keeper we have had since Pete Jameson left.

How on God's green Earth did Liverpool do that?
There are times when an extremely heavy defeat in the English top level suffered by noted teams can have a good effect on their reaction to it that a manager can use.

Anyone remember 28th August 2011....Manchester United 8 ... Arsenal 2. Arsene Wenger used that result to reformulate the Arsenal side.

It is much nearer in time to 4th October 2020 ....Aston Villa 7 ... Liverpool 2. Liverpool learnt something from that defeat.

I said to my mate that if Liverpool won I was a Chinese dinner lady. I suppose I am now.
It will be like Spurs Vs Man City, the next game Liverpool will come crashing back to earth with a bump losing to Bournemouth.

Manchester United really did just win the League Cup and half their fanbase treated it as some sort of incredible return to the top of the roost.

A week later it's all "Glazers Out" on Twitter. Shambles really. Man U's a proper club which should be a lot more dignified than that.

I think it’s a microcosm of how the premier league is these days. Everything is either brilliant or a disaster. The media don’t help of course, especially the self-hyping ones like Savage and Collymore

How Indeed, I never saw that coming in fact I thought a Man Utd win or a draw
I thought it was looking like a pretty normal game until half time.

I wonder how 6 goals in a second half compares with other similar high scoring wins?

I once saw Bolton let in 6 in the first half of a game away to Notts County, ended up 6 - 1. That's the largest score to one team in one half that I can recall (in pro football anyway).
